Thanks Marina, Rachylou and Sisi for your thoughtful replies. I really don't know anything about the shirts, so I will research them a little. And if I see one again, I may bring one home.

I like very much the typical clothes from certain cultures, but I do not have any because I would not know how to incorporate them in my everyday life. I especially love dirndls (I see women wearing them in everyday life when I am on holidays in Sud Tirol, and I like this keeping the tradition alive, and every time I have a strong temptation to buy one), kimonos and saris. But I do have and use a wonderful kimono-robe!

And I agree with Marina: I do not see anything wrong in wearing something that belongs to another culture, if you do it with consciousness. It means that you like and appreciate that culture!

Being a true American mutt and of mixed ethnicity, with a big family and community of even more diversity (hate that word, btw), everything I wear is a cultural appropriation. I don't know. It's kind of weird. When I think about it, I'm afraid to go out, lol!

Ok let me count the cultures: German, Prep/Sloane, Afro/West Indian, Scottish, Indian, Spanish Gypsy (real, not hipster), Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan, Vietnamese... and of course, SF Bay Area Native Wear (which means craft aprons and arm warmers).

I suppose the one thing I don't quite do is Nashville. I'm really bad at hair...

I grew up and still live in São Paulo, the most multi-ethnic city in Brazil, which is an already multi-ethnic country. Lets just say ethnic mixture is a huge part of my very identity. I use clothes and accessories inspired by multiple ethnic groups/periods mixed with basic/classic items very often. Today I'm using a shirt and trousers with an obi (a Japanese belt). Yesterday I used a wrap skirt with Indian style. Before yesterday I used gypsy like earrings and crochet purse. Not sure what I used before but since I have all sorts of things with all sorts of ethnic influences its highly probable I was using something with ethnic inspiration

ps.: about cultural appropriation, from someone from a highly multi-ethnic culture, I don't really understand why should I feel offended by someone using something typically Brazilian because he/she likes it. Using iconic/traditional things to demeaning another culture is disrespectful and wrong. Using something from another culture ignoring its meaning is disrespectful and a very bad idea. Using something from another culture because you actually like it, understanding its meaning, is a form of appreciation and shows a desire to understand and share things with people from different cultural backgrouds. This should never be considered disrespectful. At least this is how I feel about it.

Last weekend on vacation in Los Angeles, we went to Olvera Street to see a mural by David Alfaro Siqueiros, which was whitewashed. While there I saw the white peasant tops with the colorful embroidery. They were a big trend when I was in Middle School? High School? They made my heart sing. I wanted to buy one, but these days I was concerned with cultural appropriation.

What do you think/what would you have done?

I realy like the european traditional motfs like floral embroiderys. The original embroidered clothes are expensive hard to find,

luckily there are cheaper alternativs like this http://www.redbubble.com/peopl.....-art?asc=u.

I studied Japanese for several years, including the history of clothing in Japan. I do think it influences my style. Particularly color/fabrics being seasonally appropriate, and mixing colors, as well as interesting texture (one traditional combo was red silk with sheer white overlay). My favorite era is called "Heian".

I have a hard and fast bent towards ethnic clothing- everything from Tartan to Indian Kurta's and Sari's to Eastern European embroidery. I love that picture that you posted. I don't know what it is, but I have always loved ethnic looking pieces. When I met my husband, he wore these hand made beautifully embroidered South American made shirts (open over a white tee and with beat up Levi's). I think that is a big reason that I fell in love with him! I try to incorporate this love in small doses, because too much can look costumey, but I think that I will always be drawn to them.

Being in Scotland tartan is everywhere, I love the look but do not wish to look like I'm wearing a national costume. i do think it has helped to adjust my eye to other patterns and colour combinations though.

I bet the colors they used were dictated by practicality of the dyes. I am kind of surprised I have seen some stores here that sell traditional clothing.

Itari-I don't wear any fold inspired clothes specifically. But you just described me to a "t" since I am of Polish decent. Fair skin is an understatement, sometimes I feel like a ghost next to others.

I suspect that part of the reason I'm drawn to very tailored, very classic shapes is early exposure to Tracht (German traditional costume, very similar to Polish). It probably also accounts for my attraction to full skirts, even though that's usually a bad idea for me.

Other examples of Tracht:

hi Itari - I am originally from India, so yes, my style does get inspired by Indian colors (deep, contrasting colors) and designs. I often have an item of jewelry or clothing that's either wholly or partially Indian mixed in with western pieces.

Do you wear clothes inspired by any particular culture?

I must say that I'm partial to items inspired by European folk. Not in an obvious way, though.

Here is a picture of traditional clothes from my region:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wi.....laskie.jpg

The first thing I've noticed about the image are the strong colours, no patterns and high contrast. However, the clothes become more flamboyant as you go east; colourful embroidery, stripes, jewellery, peacock feathers, floral patterns. The basic colours, however, don't change: black, red, navy, white. As you can see, "folk" doesn't neccesarily mean "boho".

The interesting thing is that Polish people are usually soft in their colouring. Fair skin, ashen dark blonde hair, quite dark eyebrows and eyelashes, blue eyes (and yes, my natural colours are quite different).

This is a very good example (and the model is gorgeous) - and the folk inspiration is present here too.
http://hellwoman.deviantart.co.....3-75634739

I'll write more as soon as I can.
