You know I had to have the socks done too right?? :P I fold them around each other so I don't stretch out elastic by wrapping one inside another.

Joy, great idea for socks! I was pondering what to do about them. I have the individual sock dividers, but that hasn't helped me. I think rolling and rows will work better. I need to find some dividers.

I do the shorter rows like Mo's photo and have been doing this for years with tees, jeans and shorts, and cotton layering tanks. The best part is that I can find things quickly and the drawers have stayed neat. For tees, I have one short row for long sleeved tees and the rest are short sleeves. Sleeve length was the one thing that I could not see when stored like this. I also have DH's tees like this in his drawer and it stays neat. No digging around for the one he wants. This has also worked great for sock drawers with simple dividers added to keep the rolled socks in line.

Diane, even though I exercise 5-6 days a week, I also laughed at myself when I realized how many black bottoms I had! It was hard to see them before, and now they are all very visible! Fortunately, they are not all the same. They are different lengths, and different types. I have biking shorts, shorts, knee length, capri length and long. Plus, I have several different weights in the long size because of our crazy weather. The same goes for the tops! Layers are key here.

I'm just chuckling to myself, as my so called 'athletic' gear could fit in an envelope as I don't exactly 'do' much in the way of athletic stuff and possess about 3 items :P

Mo, I can easily shift my athletic gear so they are in short rows instead of long. Thanks for the tip! I bet it will be much easier to keep up now! Oh, and your drawer looks much neater than mine!

Alana, for sweaters, I rolled instead of folding. I didn't use drawers, but you can do the same thing in a drawer. I put mine in an under the bed plastic storage container. See below.

Janet, do you have any extra floor space in your bedroom? I bought some plastic bins with drawers. Thy aren't pretty, but they hold many items and make room for more clothing. You can fold and roll items in there just like a dresser. They used to be in my closet under my short hanging items. I moved them out during my closet clean out. They are mostly empty now. I am hoping to eliminate them. When I was using them, they were wonderful.

I did try this a few months ago when I was living with limited drawer space. ( Mo had written about it before) The downfall for me was that I had lots of items the same colour -black - and they all looked the same folded up so I had to pull them out to get the one I wanted. Mind you now that I have plenty of drawer space and have reverted to more untidy methods I still have to pull out the black tops to work out which one is which!

As for upkeep, I do like shorter rows so that they tend to stay up better than the longer ones when items start to get removed and worn.
So, for instance, I don't do 2 long rows, but rather 4 short rows front to back. This is just the left side of a long drawer. There is another row of work uniform logo tees on the right side.

I wish I had a drawer for athletic wear. Lots of shelving, but few drawers in our storage situation. The ones we have are taken up with sleepwear, underwear, and hosiery. Ah well.

Janet, there are four pairs of bike shorts in the drawer shown in pic 1. I am not sure how to describe my procedure for folding them, but I did kind of fold the fabric around the padding from two directions which made them relatively flat and smooth.

Firecracker, my t-shirts are coming up next. I want to either fold them like this or roll them like I did my sweaters. I will need some sort of container to put them in that will sit on my shelf and allow easy access.

Mo, you deserve all the credit for this one! Thanks! Now I wonder what the upkeep will be like compared to my weekly re-folding of everything?!

When someone figures out a good way to store padded bike shorts, let me know. My collection has grown since I have started riding multiple times a week, and they are the worst thing to try to fold -- I basically just wrap the fabric around the padding part and cram it into the shelf with my running shorts and capris.

When I was cleaning out my closet, Mo suggested a method of folding she uses for her dresser drawers. It came up because I have had so many items on my shelves that when I reach for one item in a stack, the rest come tumbling down. Eventually, I have to refold everything. It's a nuisance. It's also clear that when athletic gear is stacked like that in a drawer, you can only see the top items in the pile and that is what gets used, not the items at the bottom.

Mo showed pretty pictures of her neatly folded items stacked vertically in her drawers so everything could be seen. When everything is seen, hopefully everything is used. I loved it so much that I decided to do it myself. What do you think? May not be as neatly folded as Mo's, but it's a start.

Pic 4 is a before shot. Pic's 1-3 are afters. A bonus is the 1/2 drawer that was left empty when I was finished. No eliminated items, but more free space!
