I bought some booties that fit closely on my ankle last year, and they ended up being surprisingly uncomfortable so I got rid of them. Somehow they were cutting into my leg even though they were not that high and they fit fine everywhere else on my foot.

The pair I have now is a bit of a flowerpot, but they are also a bit chunky and casual biker style so I don't mind too much. Half the time I wear them under bootcut jeans, anyway, so they are not very obvious.

I like your booties here. I also struggle with booties that are closet to the leg, but fit a wider foot. I am always tucking jeans into them to fill out the space, or rolling jeans to try to hide the extra boot.

Thank you every one.
Angie, funny- I thought you might have just not noticed the gap in the booties and made a mistake with the killer.
Footwear seems to always be my biggest problem because I cannot find refined footwear that fits.
I have had to make funky choices part of my style.
That and the fact that I am on my feet and moving heavy easels around a dirty art room all the time.
So whether or not is is everyone's favorite thing, it is what it is and I will continue to wear my flower pots.
What are tailored booties- does that mean when they are obviously supposed to fit around the ankle?
I know all about tall boots and have problems with them also.
Ah, wide, big feet and skinny ankles and calves- a challenge for sure!

I think it depends a lot on your style (greenglove, your style is kind of quirky!), on the style of the bootie (how chunky overall it is, in addition to the ankle gape), and on your overall height and frame. For me, I am not a very quirky dresser, and I am very short and small boned (I am actually quite underweight right now, so it's more than just small boned!). I look like I'm playing dress-up when I wear most booties that gape at the ankle. It doesn't look casual or feminine; it looks *too big*. I don't mind a little bit of gape, but when you have a very small frame, it doesn't take much gape before it looks wrong.

I do think that you can get away with more gaping if the shoe is not so chunky. I think the heavier the shoe is, the more the gaping might be obvious.

I am currently in unfrumped's camp--trying to substitute with shooties or else with ankle booties that don't go much above the ankle.

April, I agree with you about the tall boots being a mixed blessing. I got a pair altered to fit my calf, and it's pretty much straight up and down! At least the larger ones give the appearance of having a calf, ha ha.

My two cents, which is probably worth just about that. :-)

When booties first raged into the stores, seems to me that FPE *was* the goal, or at least, the initial retail translation. Or how the merchandise translated in photos on twiggy legged models. But now it seems to be moving away from FPE to more fitted in the ankles. (Along with more pointy toed styles, which sets this style retread apart from the 90s). Not sure if that is where the trends are going, or if the trends are being driven by flattery and practicality restraints and what sells best.

Personally, I think booties came back into style simply because tall boots were getting more and more difficult -- too many fit points, shaft height, shaft width, AND ankle height and width too. So it made sense retailers shifted to booties, no more "extended calf" and "narrow calf" to deal with. But yeah, booties still have fit points -- not just the darn ankle shaft width, but height too, which is, frankly, just as much a bother to me as finding narrow width booties. Grrr.

One year on the market and retailers probably realized that the booties they were selling didn't work all that well with the pants they were hawking -- to unfrumped's point -- so next we had a flood of sausage casing too-tight jeggings and awkward ankle length pants, and yes, booties that hug the ankle.

Personally I really like "the flower pot effect", as long as it is not extreme and the booties are clearly too big :) I find it adds a little femininity. I actually struggle with boots that fit too closely around the ankle ??

Jean, you pull off that outfit with Diane Keaton Quirky and Arty Panache. As Anna pointed out, I thought you looked killer. And while I am actually quite intolerant of tailored bootie gaping these days - when it works like it magically does in your outfits - I happily give credit where it's due.

Don't know; have to find your own tolerance level.
i still struggle and that is for sure keeping me back from some bootie purchases.
I'm still thinking that the solution is in more of a shootie or in a very slightly higher than ankle-height boot shaft so it is not right at the very thinnest part of ankle. Will see.

I did get surprised to find I needed a slimmer fit for pants also, or else the pants get hung up on the boot shaft. This is for non-bootcuts but still classic or straight leg width. It is something I would tend not to notice in the store or when trying on if just standing, but then during a day IRL, getting up and down, my pants are crawling up the back of my booties. So no bueno.

Jean, I'm honestly not sure how I feel about the flower pot look. I wore it all the time in the 80s -- with skirts -- and always thought it just looked cute because it made my legs look twiggy (I was coming out of a chubby period and anything twiggy was good in my book.) But nowadays I worry more about looking like I don't know what proper fit is.

However, now that I have tall boots that fit properly around skinny calves, I realize that in some instances, "correct" fit is a mixed blessing. In the case of tall boots, it makes my feet look awkwardly long and my calves look like little stovepipes. I probably won't buy any more non-slouchy tall boots for that reason.

Can you post some photos so we can see how they look?

Greenglove - I am totally with you. I have a pair of 9West booties, an Angie pic from several years ago, I mean Robin Hood could have worn them. Definitely potted and I think they are totally cute. I do have shooties, no space at all, but booties, they would not be comfortable if they were that tight, I mean the ankle is a flexible joint, right? So I don't sweat this. If it looks good on and feels comfortable that's what I really care about.

I feel like I see a little gaping either with bare legs/skirts or boyfriend jeans all the time when booties are styled in ad copy or pininterest or runway shots. I think it's intentional and cute/quirky/casual. I think about how shoes are drawn in comic books, and how the artist often emphasizes a bit of gap at the top of a bootie or sneaker.

I keep thinking of Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle going on about the little bit of 'stinky' in really great perfumes that is the thing that makes them compelling. For me, a little tiny bit of dorky or quirky or personal in a look just makes it for me when I'm looking at other peoples outfits. That's why I really like looking at the sartorialist street style pictures, he has an eye for that. http://www.thesartorialist.com.....-london-3/
