Lyn: there are websites where you can list the scammers and rumor is they will be penalized, maybe with fines, but definitely with loss of business once word gets out. There is such a site on facebook but I don't think it will link here. Do a google search and then do some damage to their reputation.

Thank you again to everyone who responded for the support and prayers. And as Gaylene said other cities, towns and villages are affected downstream that are getting the combined water of 2 or more rivers coming together. The whole southern half of the province is affected (and that is larger than the size of most US states, maybe as big as Texas). Sorry to chime in again late but thank you all still the same.

Just wanted to spare a thought for the smaller city of Medicine Hat which is currently bearing the brunt of all that water which did so much damage to Calgary and Canmore. The streams that go through these cities join with another major water shed which also has been flooding the south part of the province. The two systems combine just outside of Medicine Hat.

I'm currently with family in Medicine Hat. The river is 20 times its normal size and 1/6 of the population has been evacuated from their homes. Fortunately, my family is not among that group but the situation is definitely dire for many. The river is not expected to go down for a day or so, so everyone is praying that the berms and sandbagging will hold to prevent wholesale flooding, and loss, of infrastructure such as bridges, power, and water.

Some idiot hiked gas up to 184 in Canmore before people were leaving, I heard on the radio, I think that's pretty heartless, considering gas is 119 here in the city.

Sorry about your friend's house, Lyn. And with your friends' homes too, Gaylene.

There has been some shopping panic and price gouging but overall, I heard it wasn't that bad. I didn't feel the need to hit the stores yesterday and will hopefully have enough for the next few days.

Had to run to the store for some milk and found the the banana section completely cleaned out. I mentioned it to the clerk at the till and she rolled her eyes at what had been happening over the last two days--fist-fights over bottled water, loaded shopping carts, and that run on bananas. Who knew that bananas had magical properties when it came to floods?

That said, it is really sobering to be reminded of quickly our lives can change because of these natural disasters. I'm one of the lucky ones who just has to put up with a few minor inconveniences, but I have several friends who are going to return to damaged, flooded homes. It will take weeks, months, and even years for some people to get back on their feet.

One of my friends lost their home (sad face) and we were going to go to Banff for Canada Day (bah) - lots of crazy stuff to the south of us; and we are starting to see the mental health effects of it in the ER.

This is disturbing news. My husband left on Friday for a camping trip to Banff with his friends but he is stuck now in the city. Fortunately, he is staying with his friend and it is safe in their area. I hope the water recedes soon and people can return safely to their homes.

My hometown:

http://o.canada.com/2013/06/22.....er-photos/

about 80,000 people evacuated from their homes, but people are generally calm and in reasonably good spirits. Lots of co-operative efforts to help others out.

This was due to record flooding never seen before in this region. Extensive rain (we're usually quite dry) in the past 2 weeks plus melted snow and ice from the mountains upstream added up quickly. We were prepared for a flood but not expecting one of this magnitude. All of downtown and some inner city neighborhoods (where much of the good shopping is) are underwater. Most of the major roadways are impassible due to the overflow of the 2 rivers that cross town. We are told to stay in our homes unless evacuated, to keep the streets clear for emergency and rescue vehicles only.

Soon as it dries up the extensive clean-up begins...
