Well darn it, sounds like I already had the best idea with layering. Not sure what sorts of magic i thought might be possible, but I get so tired of schlepping the extra pieces when I don’t have them on, and trying not to lose them. Most times I wind up doing like Astrid & grinning & bearing it for much of the day.

Suz, add a pair of knickers & you could head out for a weekend with that cargo. Suntiger, taking tights off during the day? That gets you extra points for....something.

LaPed, thanks for the commiseration. Florida boy thinks I’m an idiot for ever thinking butter didn’t have to be refrigerated. (Shows how much he’s been paying attention).

Firecracker, good point to remember bottom layers as I’m getting dressed to go out.

Sterling, enjoy the “off” day. Bare feet are where it’s at! Wish I could do that beyond our doorstep, but I don’t in the city.

I hate carrying unnecessary things around, so my strategy is being sometimes a little too cold and sometimes a little too hot. No but seriously, the only thing I’m usually doing is taking my jacket or cardigan off. Years ago I loved wearing scarves all through the year, but I stopped doing that completely. My summer scarves are all languishing in my wardrobe...

Our summers are consistently in the 90s, so just a little sweater for ac. But early spring and late fall can vary by 20 + degrees. My solution is to keep multiple toppers and shoes in the car, and bring or take off tights as needed.

a lightweight wool scarf a must for all seasons....for the very hottest days of summer i stuff it in a bag and pull it out for AC moderation, otherwise it can just go around my neck or shoulders

Backpack containing layers (pullover, scarf, socks) and a pair of sandals in case of sudden heat. I struggle with this every Spring, when the temperaure can fluctuate wildly from cold to hot and viceversa in the same day. A backpack also comes handy when it turns suddenly hot and I can stash in it my puffer or raincoat. I hate going out and about keeping a topper on my arm! Of course it is not the most elegant solution but ... I have not found another yet! Interesting, also in Italy we say "dress like an onion".

We're having wildly varying temps and precipitation in the Pacific Northwest this June/ July, too -- after a hot and sunny May!

I generally carry a bag that is large enough to accommodate layers -- a sweater, or a cropped jacket, and a scarf. Also a water bottle. And sometimes a packable umbrella. :)

It's not very creative but it is tried and true and it works for me. It does mean planning outfits that work with or without the top layers.

It's not that creative, but I will often add a scarf to an outfit with the expectation that I will remove it at some point in the day. I may also have on a necklace, too, if I think I'll want that touch of something once the scarf comes off.

Layers are a necessity here in Colorado. Temperature differences are most pronounced in spring and fall, but I’ve posted today’s forecast in photos: low of 61°, high of 100°

I see a lot of lightweight kimonos in the summer. They’re an easy layer that fits tidily into a bag when it gets too hot. Lightweight scarves can also provide just enough extra warmth to get through, and are tied to a bag when it heats up. Also, if I’m being totally honest, a lot of folks just grin and bear it. Most dress for the warmest temp and assume the chilly part of the day will pass.

Open weave linen sweaters that can be worn over a top.Mine are pullovers but it's not about the style, it's the fabric that works well. Adds some warmth without being too much, doesn't "hold" moisture the way cotton can, crisp-ish appearance and lightweight.

Butter melting temp always sneaks up on me too. I generally end up with one liquified stick every summer when I forgot to put it in the fridge and it sits out all day, basking.

I start almost everyday in layers. it's in the 60s when I get up and in the 80s by the afternoon. Cotton sweaters, hoodies, flannels, etc. all get lots of use (evenings too, to keep the bugs off!).

Shoes are the trickiest, because I don't like wearing sandals in dewy grass. I often end up switching footwear mid-day when things dry out, which necessitates a larger bag.

Our temps have been in the 90's with heat index, at times, reaching triple digits. Indoors, the arctic A/C is cranking. When I am in and out of doors a lot I carry a lightweight topper in my car or bag. That's about as creative as I get.

Stagiaire Fash on "Flexible style"

Not spandex or having a range of sizes in your closet: let’s talk about “flexing” to fit various weather conditions in one day.

Temps here in Berlin this summer have swung between extremes, and appear to be swinging again. For the last two days, highs were predicted to be in the low 70s, but didn’t get out of the 60s. We went to bed with high 70s forecast for today. It’s 80.

A woman just walked past in trousers and low heels. She was wearing a scarf tossed loosely around her neck, ends hanging in front, no wrapping. She had a jacket over her shoulders. Even though she probably envisioned wearing the jacket, arms in sleeves, as she got dressed this morning, she still looked effortlessly pulled together. Then a cyclist passed her up, wearing her sweater in classic preppy over-the-shoulder style, sleeved crossed loosely in front. She looked good too.

When we know ahead of time that summer temps will be unseasonably cool, we can wear tights with the dress or skirt we had planned (I’ve seen dress + leggings + sandals a lot lately) or add an undershirt to be warm without changing the look (raises hand). But what about on-the-go changes in condition? Do you have creative ways of layering or other secrets to deal with days when the temperatures change considerably?

Photo 1 is a reference to the German phrase for dressing in layers—“onion effect”.
https://www.presentermedia.com.....8;id=21530

Photos 2 & 3—laughing at myself. Yes, it actually is warm, and no, I may not leave the butter on the porch any more! Yuck. Good thing we’ve got a good drain.
