Women usually wore them with boots and medium-length skirts, so there wasn’t a huge amount of leg showing, just a bit above and below the knee. The illusion of sheerness wasn’t perfect. The fleece added thickness, and sometimes wrinkles. But since so many people were wearing it, it didn’t come across as weird. Plus the winters there were such that actual sheer hose would have been a life-threatening fashion choice.
