LOL, Adelfa. I wish my husband understood that I can't still wear the gigantic fleece jacket that I wore when I was hugely pregnant and two sizes bigger. He thinks that one is good enough, and I don't need an "alternative".

PG, I keep a linen knitted shawl in a drawer. The knit makes the linen warmer!

You are cracking me up because when DD met her scientist hub-to-be, he wore a black fleece at all times. He was from Seattle and didn't seem to grasp that the Southern California climate didn't require perma-fleece. So DD gently steered him towards sweaters and dashing tweed jackets, calling them a "fleece alternative." That moniker made sense to him and he accepted the substitutions. They've been together 9 years and to this day they happily shop together for fleece alternatives!

Kristin -- I love that one! Will check it out next time I'm at Nordstrom. That could be exactly what I'm looking for.

Vix -- It's still warm out, so I need something I can take on and off just while in the office. I do have some silk long underwear from LL Bean, though!

ETA: My husband already works there and says it's kept at arctic temperatures...

Hi Pastrygirl --

I've BTDT where wrapping myself in a blanket or fingerless gloves feels like the only viable alternative, but I do save the blanket-esque piece for my lap.

I find cotton doesn't keep me warm in winter, and if one's always throwing on the same top layer life can get a bit drab.

Do you wear silk? If so, I'd invest in some underlayers -- tanks, long sleeves, maybe even longjohns for under pants depending on how cold you run. Outdoor stores, LL Bean, Lands End, Wintersilks are all sources.

If you don't wear silk, I'd recommend synthetic underlayers designed for performance (wicking, temp control, etc).

If the arms of the Bobeau are too slim for layering under, then google "fleece wrap" - lots of great options!

How about a fleece wrap? I have 2 of these and they are very comfy:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/bo.....te/3113609

I'm going back to the office world tomorrow after a 7-year hiatus, and I know I'll be freezing. I already plan to layer but I'd like to keep another layer at work. My old self always used a plain black fleece, but I really don't want something dull like that.

Have you seen anything interesting lately? It needs to be non-wool, no animal hair or fur of any kind or percentage. Cotton or synthetic is fine. Black or dark gray would probably be best so it would go with everything, and needs to have room for the layers I will probably already be wearing.

Ideas?
