I too have a similar fit problem, though I'm taller at 5'8. I am no hourglass! Waist proportionately larger than my narrow hips, though my bum is not particularly flat.

Because my torso is so long, low rises don't work for me, nor do medium rises below 11-1/2 inches. I wear only high rises, and love cropped (but not super cropped) tops. Any extra volume in pants legs—and I wear balloon, horseshoe and wide leg pants most of the time anyway—is okay with me.

I'm the same body shape as you. Angie's recommended a few great jeans for me over the years. I've linked what I have in my finds so you can see the variety of shapes. I loved the Paige jeans so much that I duplicated at full price even though they are on the higher end expense-wise for me. The picture makes them look a lot shorter than they are. They are ground sweeping with flats for me and I'm a little over 5'4". The white Colette jeans from Maeve at Anthropologie (custom find) are such a great fit for me that I have four variations of them (linen, poplin, corduroy, and denim). Levis are always a little tight on the waist for me, but the ribcage straights are okay. I wear them with heeled boots, otherwise the length is awkward. The Pistil jeans are a recent addition of my own from Nordstrom because I was looking for some interesting baggy jeans. They run big and stretch out. I also recently picked up a pair of barrel pants at Uniqlo that are very flattering, but I'm trying to decide whether I need them. Hopefully this long list gives you some good ideas!

There’s a bunch of us! I also have a disproportionately wide waist compared to my hips, although not an especially flat bum. I find that when the waist fits, the hips and legs are often too voluminous. Back in the straight leg days it worked for me because they weren’t as skin tight on me. Now with wide legs, the legs are often laughably wide, especially since I am your height.

I have had some luck with straight leg jeans that fit me more like a boyfriend jean, sort of like your first picture. Favorites are from The Loft but I got them from Poshmark so not sure about their current jeans. I also have some J Crew as they seem to run narrow.

Pants are my biggest fit challenge for sure!

Great tips above. My waist is also out of proportion with my hips and legs and for me what works best is really a lower rise (not super low just more hip than waist). Boyfriend jeans are the easiest because they are made to fit that way.

Same problem here and I’ve also had good luck with Mother denim. Years ago I like Joe’s Jeans and AG, but don’t have any currently.

You might also try Gap. I have some Gap Factory white denim that fit nicely. I can’t remember the exact style but they are a basic straight leg.

This is my fit dilemma, too. Things that seem to help:

if you wear a high waist to add structure as in some of Irina’s examples:

Choose a partly spandex fabrication so that you will not get pinched really hard

Get the seam down the back waist tailored in to help with excess fabric.

Wear a cropped shirt or tuck your shirt in

If you wear a low or mid rise, you’re getting rid of the waist fit problem, because you can just go with jeans that fit your hips:

Choosing a top is a bit more tricky because you still want to to avoid the top heavy look

Boot cuts or flares (I am liking a front patch pocket flare sometimes) can avoid the carrot silhouette where all the width is up high in the outfit.

Try Mother jeans. I’ve found them made along less curvy lines, and they have a particularly good back view! They can be very spendy though. Hopefully you can find a bricks and mortar store that carries them and for a try-on.

Same body type but I am taller. I have not got into the wide leg or barrel trend for this reason. I need some leg definition or I look wide from top to toe. Straight leg mid-rise are my favourite option for now with fluid and looser tops that sit just a bit longer than my tummy. Like SHARAN mentioned men's jeans can work well, especially some Levi's. Btw your jeans in the pics look like what I would wear too. I have never had a pair that my bottom fills out fully but I don't mind a bit of slouch as it suits my Tomgirl aesthetic.

Similar shape - a bit taller 5'4" and no bust whatsoever. Lucky brand sweet mid rise in wide leg ( not super wide ) was the best so far - some drape, a bit of hiding the limited roundness of the back side.

You might try some men's jeans. I have a pair of men's Levi's that I like a lot. I have the luxury of being able to shop at a Levi's store near me, where they had a good selection of sizes.

Hi, so I am taller than you at 5'6, but I have similar trouble with my jeans being too tight in the waist and too loose in the hips, with lots of voluminous extra fabric. My favorite jeans brands by far are Madewell and JCrew, if they are available where you live.
The Perfect Vintage Wide Crop jean from Madewell is probably my favorite jean. It is not stretchy at all, and you might need to size up, but it fits really well in the hips/butt area for me. For JCrew, I like the kickout crop, which is very stretchy. These fit close to the body until about the shin. Both of these styles are cropped, as it is still quite warm where I live, and I can get away with crops even in winter here. I have some other styles from these brands that work for me, but these are my favorites.
I also quite like the Palmer pants from Loft, which are like a twill fabric and come in various colors. I would recommend sizing down in those.

You pretty much described my body type and height. Proportions are important ans overall shape, too.
I wear tapped leg, barrel and wider straight jeans. I fit the waist and look at how jeans seat on my hips/backside. I find that baggy jeans are more forgiving. Wide leg will work, too. Below some of my recently purchased jeans.

Angie’s denim silhouette post blog inspired this…

I love jeans but I am yet to find the perfect cut for me. I’m fairly short, at 5”2, with a flat bum, narrow hips, skinny legs. I carry most of my weight around my belly, so my waist is comparatively large in proportion to my hip size. So when I but jeans for my waist size, the hips fit looks off. Skinny jeans are sometimes an option, but not a fan of the top heavy silhouette right now.

Not sure if the pics add any value but maybe they give some visual reference

Any suggestions welcome.
