One thing to watch out for on ebay is fake premium denim. I think Maya's been burned, and I wouldn't trust myself to be able to tell, necessarily. (Ebay's hard; you really have to build an expertise. For instance, as intimated above, I can now basically tell when an auction has a fake Anthro item, but premium denim is above my paygrade. I think there are dedicated forums, though, where you can post a link and they can authenticate the jeans (or not).)

Not a flat bottomed girl (anymore!), but I just wanted to suggest checking ebay once you find something you like. I buy my David Kahn's there (which are the same price at Nordie's as the Hudson's) for under $40, although Hudson's are more popular and probably won't be as cheap.

This is so helpful-- thanks, ladies! I saw the Hudson ones on Nordie's website, and I wondered if there might be something to their flap.

I do hear ya on the price difference. Oddly, my cheap option has been PacSun's jeans, but they stopped making the cut I liked. Maybe I'll try American Eagle for everyday jeans, and scope out a pair of Hudsons for date nights...

I'm glad to hear that you like the Hudson jeans Joy! I love Hudson jeans too but I outgrew the ones I shared with Joy.
I have tried so many different styles and brands of jeans and there is a great difference in how they present the rear. Something about shading, pocket placement and pocket size. Even the way the seams are placed or the pattern cut can give an appearance of curves. It's a science and worth all of the trying on..

San sent me a pair of Hudson jeans that do wonders for my flat rear. They have the flaps on the pockets and are my best pair of jeans. I've had good luck with Kut From the Kloth. They aren't fabulous but look pretty good and don't get baggy. I've got them in a straight legged dark denim and skinnies in white. I also get compliments on an older pair of Calvin Klein jeans. Also try Citizens of Humanity. I've heard that 7FAM are great for flat bottoms but the ones I've tried have had too low a rise.

You may want to check out Kut from the Kloth jeans. I have a couple of pairs, and while they are borderline short on me (I can wear them with my flattest shoes), they tend to have back pocket detailing and flaps that give a little more curve to the backside.

The tailor I go to for alterations once recommended True Religion as a good brand for people with flat butts (his words, not mine ). I've picked up a pair or two since then, and they definitely fit better than other brands I've tried -- they don't get baggy and result in the droopy drawers effect. They do have several styles with rear pocket flaps as well. The only real downside is the cost

I tried the Levis curve and they didn't work for me. I have wider hips and a flattish bum. I have a few pairs of gap long and lean and a levis straight cut white and grey jeans that I bought last year. Of all of the jeans I have, the ones I wear the most are the inexpensive Old Navy Sweetheart skinnies.

I read an interview with Jessica Simpson and she suggested curvy girls wear skinnies a size up from normal. I tried it and with a belt, I have room in the thighs and hips without the butt flattening that happens with many jeans.

My new red jeans are Esprit straight leg and I really like the fit of them and they give the appearance of slight butt fullness.

Di, try the Levis Curve ID jeans. I wear the demi curve style, but the slight curve might be perfect for you! JCP.com has the bootcut versions on sale!

I am hesitant to suggest this, because in some ways I think they are responsible for a lot of my current concerns about finances and shopping, but I bought two pairs of Hudson bootcuts in the summer of 2009 and they are incredibly flattering.

I also definitely prefer a low-rise (I am relatively small-hipped and basically flat-butted), and I was very intrigued by the Hudson signature pocket flaps. I ended up going to the enormous Macy's in San Francisco and spending like half a day trying on most premium denim brands. In the end, I liked Joe's Rocker cut and Citizens of Humanity Kelly, but the Hudsons were my favorite (signature bootcut). I got them in two slightly different washes and hemmed one for heels and one for flats. They are gorgeous and incredibly flattering.

The problem, imo, is that I was pretty happy with my American Eagle jeans. No pocket flaps, but they cost usually around $40-$50 to the Hudson's $170 per pair. I signed up for a Macy's card to bring the cost down (and got my CA tax refunded by going to the customer service department and showing them my out-of-state driver's license), but it was still an insane amount of money. The problem is that I believe that paying that much for jeans sort of did a permanent reset in my brain about how much I should pay for things. I find myself splurging on the occasional full-price piece from Anthropologie, which was full-stop unthinkable about four years ago. Admittedly, I'm older, but I don't think my financial situation has kept apace with how my price points have increased.

All in all, I recommend Hudsons, with reservations. Proceed with caution.

So, Angie's post and thread have me thinking about jeans, and I'm due for a new pair. I'm bracing myself for trying on a slew of them, but I'd love some tips in the right direction. Pocket flaps are good, as are low rises (both seem to add a little curve).
