Thanks for the responses. I appreciate the enabling for getting two pairs! lol. Even my husband said I should just look for both. I have a pair of high waist flares on the way, so we'll see what happens.

I second approprio: buy what you find the most flattering, fitting, comfortable pair! I love both flares and bootcuts and I thought (perhaps mistakenly) that, with the comeback of wider hems, both were on the rise again. Having said that, a discreet and slim bootcut seems more classic to me than a more pronounced flare. I'm very into the "baby bootcut" now, but Lisa is right that some are so slim that you might not actually be able to wear boots under.

Either way, yay for wider hems!

I don't agree that you need to do flares with heels. I've seen them done very well with combat boots, which I think you could sport really easily. I wear them with platforms. Why not try one of each?

With regards to dating, it's happened to both at least twice in my lifetime. But what goes around comes around. I'd say flares are on the way in, boot cuts on the way out. But neither are likely to stay out of favour very long. Buy whatever fits and flatters. :)

Interesting question. With flares you really have to wear heels but with bootcuts you can cheat a little bit. But flares are much more dramatic than bootcuts.
Hmmmm, don't really have an answer , but you made me think.

I'm a bootcuts gal so I would go for those. Although if you truly do want to sport them with boots, I highly recommend shopping with the boots. Some bootcuts now-a-days are slim bootcuts and boots don't fit under them as nice as a true bootcut shape.

I have not worn my bootcuts in two years but hate to let them go. I am opting for flairs this year. They are all so long that I know I will need to hem them so will lose some of the flair. What length will you be wearing? My ideal pair would be a pair that follows the leg line to the knee then flares out to cover my shoe. Bootcuts do not cover my shoes and that is why I am not wearing them I think.

I wore my last pair of bootcuts until they were beyond repair. My intent is to replace the silhouette for the spring/summer. If you were to pick one pair for longevity, which would you buy? Would the bootcut be less dated for longer?

I would like two, but it's probably not that practical for my lifestyle. On the other hand, if I were to try two, I'd probably look for a mid/high rise flare in a dark wash for fun and a mid rise in a light/mid blue bootcut. My guess is that the bootcut would be less dated over time than the flare, but maybe not? I'd appreciate your wisdom about fashion cycles to check myself as I search and figure out my spending.

I am often practical about my purchases, but I think I have a 70's yearning from my early childhood years!
