I have one. Bought it 3 or 4 years ago, The soft cloth, the nice, medium-sized pattern and the colours (blue and white) were irresistable. I wear it quite often, most of the year except the summer months.

I have 2, one wool flannel (as warm as thick wool pullover) and one cotton.
Pro : warmer than cotton shirts, feel more cozy in Winter
Con : look casual, and more country than city
I would add more to my wardrobe if I could find some without the check pattern.

I have a couple of LL Bean flannel shirts. They are soft and wash, dry and wear very well. There are several different styles for women. The traditional fit does run very large. Recently, Bean's added a slightly fitted version. That one is my favorite. It has all the benefits of flannel, minus the extra fabric around the waist and hips. This style works very well under vests. Add jeans and a pair of LL Bean boots and you are ready for a weekend in Maine!

All through my teens I had a series of LL Bean men's black watch flannel shirts, but it stopped matching my color preferences. Now I have a men's flannel shirt from Uniqlo, solid black, that I love. The men's shirt fit my long torso and broad shoulders better, but the women's shirts are just as nice. And inexpensive!

A couple years ago, LL Bean flannel shirts were a lemming item on YLF. I got the one below which is fairly heavy. The sleeves run short in Petites which means they are short enough for me! I like my plaids to match, so LL Bean was a good option for me.

Thanks for the insight and retail suggestions.

I think I have two concerns - that quality flannel will be too hot and/or unflattering.

I will definitely take a look at J Crew - thanks Angie and Jane.

Oh Runcarla never even thought of Reitmans!

Joy and Janet, I'm definitely concerned about the lack of drape in the cotton flannel. I think I'll just have to embrace it and hope the comfy factor outweighs it!

Gaby Meyers, I'll keep an eye out at Old Navy.

texstyle, Madewell is hard to find here but I'll definitely take a look at Lands End.

JAileen, I'd want my flannel to be easy care a maybe the relaxed fit at LL Bean is the way to go.

Never thought of Carhartt, Suzanne. I also like Fjallraven.

La Pedestrienne, I will check out Patagonia.

rachylou, ha my husband has a lot of plaid unfortunately he is ten inches taller than me so no chance of raiding his closet!

There is usually one in my closet, however this spring I retired the one I had, and haven't replaced it yet. I am in the hunt and hoping for one with olive in the plaid. Reitman's (Canada) has some nice 100% cotton ones in stores.

I like them a lot, but have ended up taking mine to the ranch, where they get more wear. Unfortunately, I've gained weight since I bought a couple of my favorite ones a few years ago, so I've given those away.

I'm still attracted to plaid shirts in that style, but I go for lighter weight fabrications now that drape better. I'm running warmer than I used to, so flannel often feels a little too warm for me.

I don't have any flannel shirts. No reason except that I rely on coats and sweaters. When I was little, we used to choose one for my dad every year as a gift, and I'm not entirely sure why, lol. I think we just liked the plaids.

I don't know if I've ever not had a flannel shirt. I'm on my fourth LLBean flannel (since middle school). I wear them til the elbows shred. They do run big now -- my very old ones (probably late 90s/early 00s) were all size S; when I replaced ~3 years ago I found that to get a comparable fit I need to go down to an XXS.

My current flannel rotation also includes one from Woolrich (buffalo check and a longer boyfriend fit) and one from Patagonia (lightweight and striped instead of plaid). If I add another, it will be Patagonia again -- the fit is flattering, the colors are always interesting, the fabric is super soft and durable, and they're well-priced considering the cotton is organic.

Flannel is a year-round staple for me. Summer mornings can be chilly where I am, but a hoodie/fleece/sweater often feels like overkill -- I'll often wear a flannel-as-jacket for a couple hours in those instances.

I live in the PNW, but I hadn't worn flannel/plaid shirts since the 90s until I added a couple in the past year. I have them now for a few reasons. One is because they do suit our climate very well as layering items; I usually wear them over a T-shirt of some sort. Another reason is that for me, who grew up in a dressier environment, they serve well to dress things down in a way that suits this area and my lifestyle better. For example, I find pairing a plaid shirt with a skirt more interesting and less dressy than, say, knitwear with a skirt.

As for what I look for...I prefer a combination of good quality and what I consider a very reasonable price if I can get it. One can pay more than $100 for a flannel shirt as you show (hmm...that one is rayon), especially for the wool ones. Many of us appreciated the quality of the wool Pendletons that we used to score for less than $5 each at thrift stores in the 90s. Then the vintage clothing craze really took off, and you couldn't get them for less than $25. New ones can be almost $200, but Pendleton's aesthetic can be very harmonious compared to others.

For another take that is unconcerned with current fashion trends but in a different direction, here's a more...Americana-oriented outfitter. As with many things, one can sometimes find value by going toward the source of what inspires premium-priced fashion. One of my shirts is a Carhartt.

Speaking of which, I myself look specifically for shirts that do *not* have a regular pointed collar, for reasons. I have either hooded ones or "mandarin"/collarless ones in this area.

Another thing I look for is lower-contrast plaids, because I find that on me, a petite, some patterns can overwhelm. My personal taste also rules out shirts with a lot of white in them, pastels, bright candy colors, buffalo checks (I think just because been there, done that), and, believe it or not, the combo of red and blue--which is probably the most common one found in plaid shirts (I seem to have a poison eye for the combo in most instances, not just plaid). Let's just say I know what I like...but I can be a style outlier on YLF.

There are a LOT of cheap, cheesy, low-quality plaid shirts out there these days, especially in the juniors space, so I don't know if I'd even try one from H&M even though I do buy other things there.

I know, loooong post. I'm an analytical person, what can I say...

I have four. I wear them in cooler weather, around the house, or birding, layered over a long sleeve tee. The first is from Eddie Bauer, and the others are from LLBean. One of the LLBean shirts is probably 20 years old, and has shrunk from the dryer, and the sleeves are too short. So I don't put them in the dryer anymore. The LLBean shirts do run big. Maybe to allow for shrinkage?

Do you own one? Why or why not? What are the pros and cons? What do you look for?

I bought a plaid Rails shirt at NAS. I think it'll be a workhorse. Love the colours in the plaid and it drapes like a dream. But - it is decidedly not flannel. I live in a place with cold winters. I'd like to add a plaid flannel shirt to my repertoire. I bought a cheapie H&M one last year to try. I like it. I would like something traditionally plaid rather than checks.

I've looked at LL Bean and Uniqlo. Any experience with these retailers for flannel?
