I have way too much fitness gear. My old favorite brands are Lulu Lemon and Sweaty Betty, but in the last year I have added Alo Yoga (love their ribbed bra tanks and colors) and Tory Sport (cute sets).

I have a couple of the long bra tops but I always wear a loose tank over them, unless I'm really hot, only doing peloton at home and promise myself not to look in the mirror.

Hi Ryce, I took stock of my gear and I think I am going to wear them a bit longer but am monitoring the retail offerings. I like the idea of bike shorts and cropped tops; both silhouettes are new to me.

Hey, elpgal - this topic attracted a lot of interest! I gather you’re in the market for some new gear - have you made any purchases yet?
Echo, Love your bright patterned leggings! And Bijou’s jackets are chic as can be! Roxanne, I’m intrigued by the joggers you mentioned - would they be comfortable in hot weather?
FashIntern and Gryffin, I started a thread over in the off-topic section about plant forward diets and responded to y’all’s comments there.

Late to this party. I wear form fitted workout gear because I do strength training, dance and yoga, and need to see my form for all three. Usually it’s subtly patterned leggings, sports bra and a fitted tank or longline bra, and a jacket until I warm up. Sometimes in summer I will wear the longline bra all day and just thrown on my Lulu skirt on the bottom, and go pick up the kids or run errands in that. I don’t like tight bottoms, though, so lately I’ve been thinking of switching to fitted joggers instead of leggings on the bottom - ON makes some incredibly soft ones that Skim the body without sucking it in. Well report back.

Echo, high five on the bright colors and wearing what works for you and your activity! I bet those leggings support you while you run, body & soul.

This thread crossed my mind as I worked out yesterday. I have never had a tan stomach, and this year I want to wear bikinis. So yesterday, when I threw a football with my son (it’s a good rotational move—who knew!) and tortured myself with suspension gear, outside, in full view of neighbors & passers-by, I wore a Zella longline bra with nothing over it and the orange shorts I mentioned earlier, which turn out to be by not Champion but B.U.M. I do not think I looked good; I do not care.

Ryce & Gryff, me too, since 86. A friend gave me copies of Diet for a Small Planet, which shaped my thinking, and Laurel’s Kitchen, which had helpful recipes, both from the 1970s. Moosewood cookbooks are OGs that I still use.

Gryffin - I love your workout capsule - its amazing. I also like to wear black leggings when working out and singlet style tops. I wear mine with a simple zip up jacket (mine are in finds). I love my gym, which is super clean, functional and inexpensive. For that reason we get quite a few students, who are just naturally beautiful because they look so young and fresh, but there is no real sense of being fashionable - utility is the aim of the game.

I exercise mostly outdoors, and my warmer- weather attire mostly is concerned with sun protection and bright colors and patterns to keep me motivated. I've added the leggings I have below (sorry about the tarty photos from the website) and I have two tops similar to the one posted; I will need more before the summer is over. While things aren't ridiculously hot yet, so far they're comfortable in warmer weather, and they're good on a bike, too. The leggings are surely designed for the younger set, but they fit really well and don't lose color as they stretch, so they're faves for me.

Best thing ever. Have you found Gina Hamshaw’s Power plates cookbook? Sorry to hijack but it goes perfectly w a fitness capsule!!

Oh my! I want to apologize to all for my comments that clearly were interpreted as judgmental and ageist! Re-reading them, I think that was an understandable perception- and I’ll make an effort to be clearer about my meaning in the future!

I’ve always thought rules around athletic attire in fitness facilities are largely safety-based. As the recent Peleton treadmill recall reminds us all, fitness equipment is dangerous! A former coworker of mine suffered a rather serious injury on a treadmill. Button front shirts, pants or shorts that require belts, etc definitely add to the risk, especially for folks who are new to the equipment. But I get that a cardiac rehab facility needs to meet its patients where they are.

@Gryffin, your workout capsule is excellent! I have one of those shorter Zella tanks and love it for spin classes. (Yes, I’ve cheated on Athleta with a couple of purchases elsewhere since my neighborhood store was destroyed in a tornado in October 2019.)

I’ve been eating plant-forward since I was in my mid-20s, so for 40 years now, and am convinced it is the single best thing one can do for good health! It was a challenge when foods like brown rice and lentils were “exotic”, but once you start it’s nearly impossible to go back.

I'm in my late forties, and when I go to Pilates, I wear leggings (either Old Navy or Zella) and then a plain T-shirt that I knot at the side to provide some structure. I have a few cami-style tops with built-in shelf bras from Zella that I wear during the warmer months. I don't wear any crop tops because I am self-conscious that way.

Lisa, thanks for enlightening me. I was assuming that “PT” was understood as physical therapy/physio throughout the English-speaking world. Divided by a common language again! The trainer I’m working out with right now is also a physical therapist, and is studying to get a higher degree. There seem to be a lot of studios here that offer physical therapy as well as things like Pilates and yoga. Health insurance covers it all (assuming the instructor/class is registered), and I think it would pay for gym memberships, if gyms could open. That makes lots of sense to me—my favorite personal trainer online, who got me started on taking off the weight—is not a physical therapist/physio, but incorporates a lot of moves/methods from them. It’s a continuum, imho.

I don’t see where I said “a lot of rules”. I did say that the two you mention—indoor shoes and no offensive wording on shirts—are plenty. Not sure how to explain that further. I think those are enough, sufficient, no more are necessary. They both make sense; adding the kind of thing Zaoebi mentioned does not (although I suppose one could argue there’s a safety issue with cargo shorts, just as many pools prohibit clothes in the pool/on slides & other equipment, because the pocket covers could catch on something). I’m generally in favor of letting people make decisions for themselves.

PT means different things in diff countries : in Canada , PT usually means Personal Training . Physio ( or Physiotherapy ) is something entirely different , and I understand it’s referred to as Physical Therapy in the US . That service is provided by professionals ( it’s a Masters Degree program here) for such varied things as chronic disease , injury , and pregnancy health . Athletic Therapy is again another thing altogether

Gryffin, great post! I absolutely agree that appropriate gear depends on what you’re doing, and that for weight-lifting, being able to see your form is not optional. How cool that you picked up a whole activity, brand new to you, and can let your son guide you!

I wanted to ask if anyone is familiar with Ryderwear. I’m thinking of getting these leggings. In the past I’ve worn Prana or shorts. https://uk.ryderwear.com/produ.....sage-green

Ryce, lisap mentioned PT. From what I’ve seen (just as a client/client’s mom), people doing PT range from athletes to people who would never consider themselves regular exercisers; it makes sense they wouldn’t want to get the gear if they’re just doing maybe ten sessions to recover from an injury.

Well I guess I will be up for the old lady inappropriate attire award. My husband and I went on the covid health kick. Our diet was already pretty good (we follow Joel Fuhrman's Eat to Live - a whole food plant based diet) but we amped up the exercise. My son, in college, lifts weights/bodybuilds, and when school shut down and they sent the kids home we were able to source weight lifting equipment. So for the first time in my life I am lifting weights and on the treadmill everyday. I never really had a gear capsule so I just bought 7 days worth of outfits. Because it's so important to have proper form with weights so I don't injure myself (not always successful so see accoutrements that I've added below) my gear was bought with being able to make sure I can see not only body position but make sure I am working the correct muscles (yes mirrors at every station). So I think you all might have issues with age appropriate. That being said I'm 5'3", size 4, BMI 18.9. Anyway this is my capsule and although I exercise at home I would wear this running and out if I needed to. I think the great thing about age is I don't really care what anyone else thinks. It's gear and I'm out and getting it done - major self-given brownie points to me!! I love the leggings weight and thickness and price. Danskin is not longer available and other than the logo they are not offensive, super opaque and dont shirt. I bought all three sports bras on amazon I like them all and they work best under different tops. All my tops are zella cropped. Most of mine don't have photos. Tie dye, purple, black, gray. Since I keep underlayers the same I have 7 tops to assure my family it's a fresh outfit every day!! Love the sweaty betty jacket. It reminds me of a fencing jacket. I'm a straight rectangle and it's very flattering and neat on. If anyone else has fussy knees, wrists and elbows I highly recommend the compression capsule. I've been able to up my squats, bench press and dumbbells without injury. Gotta take care of those joints, but who knew they really works - sometimes my son is right!!

It’s difficult to “ explain “ The Rehfit Centre without boring everyone . In short , it’s an 80,000 sq ft medical fitness / rehab facility that caters to an older population - many of whom are cardiac patients . Lots of whom are also wealthy retired people . The only rules we have for attire are indoor shoes , and no inappropriate slogans on tshirts .

Lol @Lisa P they wouldn't allow you to enter the gym here even in cargo shorts (they say it's not 'gymwear') so I couldn't imagine anyone working out in everyday clothes !

I can honestly say I have NEVER seen anyone of any age working out in a gym or fitness center in streets clothes! That just boggles my mind! (Exception for hotel workout centers where one assumes the person just got stuck out of town longer than expected, but most business hotels seem to have some basic gear to loan in those circumstances.)
I take Lagree Megaformer classes and spin classes, but the hours I go tend to attract a 50-and-up crowd. There’s a pretty standard uniform for women at both studios. Leggings - from Capri to full length - and somewhat loose fitting but not sloppy tank tops. The bright patterned legging with solid top combo is pretty popular. Gear with the studio logo are popular at both places, too. Especially now with clientele trying to support the industry through these uncertain times.
I am switching over to the super high waisted leggings as I need replacements. I find them much more comfortable - the normal high rise ones slide down on me during an intense workout. Mine are worn with fulll-length tops, but I think they are adorable on the millennial and younger crowd with the long-line bra tops!
I’m personally devoted to Athleta since their highly inclusive size range includes petites in almost all of their leggings and pants. My allegiance of course will switch when @lisa p gets her “mature” gear line up and running!

PS - if you're in the states, I've heard great things about Miami Fitwear - all of their leggings are available in their full range of sizes & lengths, & fit the waist well whilst still being squatproof & opaque. I haven't tried them myself, but I love the range of fun but also more subdued patterns & designs they have (I want the 90s hip hop print!) :P

It seems other people around me are leaning into the high waisted leggings & autumnal tones trends. I've developed a mini black capsule wardrobe for my gymwear, because I was tired of pulling out neon workout tops & feeling like a sweaty highlighter every time I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror lol:

#1 Duplicated this M&S top because I'm not a fan of big logos, so the thoughtfully placed reflective strips are enough. The thumbholes can be folded out of the way, & I like that it's tunic length on petite me (so it doesn't feel so exposed with leggings) :
https://www.marksandspencer.co.....olor=BLACK

#2 Decathlon 900 zipup sports bra - I'm not particularly big chested (C-D cup) but I do some exercise activities where too much bounce feels uncomfortable (like HIIT, aerobics, weightlifting etc). I discovered these on accident but I like how they girdle without being uncomfortable, since the zips are covered & don't chafe.

#3 My leggings & jogging bottoms are all old, but mainly Puma & Adidas (I find these brands to be cut well for my pear shape, not too slim fitting/ compressive). I usually have a little more fun with my bottoms, but still in B&W or grey.

#4 Puma trainers with as minimal logos as I could find in a supportive but still lightweight enough shoe (I mainly do cardio, yoga & lift weights):

#5 Deceptively flattering H&M poncho to throw on as I enough trek back across campus, hoping no one recognises me but not feeling too embarrassed by my outfit if they do, lol: https://www2.hm.com/en_asia1/p.....68001.html

#6 There still has to be some aspect of colour somewhere lol A lightweight drawstring bag with pockets (inside too): https://www.calvinklein.com/hk.....HING%20RED
