Just signed back up for a gym this week. I did a lot of walking and hiking to stay sane, and swam in a couple of private pools. And took up snowshoeing. So I came out of the pandemic down in weight rather than up. I am looking forward to having access to a better pool and adding strength and flexibility training back in.

My shutdown was short - 3 months but I injured my right knee in the first weeks of coming back to work. Doctor was available only in the end of August 2020, PT - only last year. I'm dealing with tear in meniscus, neuroma in both feet, high stress job/life ( and now my daughter needs PT with a waiting time 2 months on her health insurance ).
It's not all hopeless - PT helped my knee and I'm working on my calfs/quads strengthening. However I'm still in survival mode and need to spend more time and effort on my own well being .
Best wishes to everyone dealing with stress and health issues in our still very challenging time!

I'm not doing that much due to my crazy work schedule. It was So much easier to be healthy when I worked from home. I bike, paddleboard, hike, swim, do archery on days I'm off, but nothing really on workdays. Food- not great cause I'm eating in my car. Too many takeaways and coffee drinks! But I do have local strawberries and asparagus

I, too, gave up the gym in March 2020, and haven't been back, but added near daily walking to my routine, and over the last two years committed to buying the clothes I needed to walk in all weather. We're in the midst of rearranging two rooms in our house (enclosed patio and guest bedroom/office) and the kids have asked for a dedicated corner for our free weights in one of those spaces. I'm not behind on routine medical appointments yet, but have those planned for later this summer, after we return from some much needed vacation.

Completely agree about gardening! There are many days that I substitute 2-3 hours of weeding and pruning for a workout, especially on those fleeting days in April and May when it's in the 60s and 70s and not raining.

Like Anne, my state had limited lockdowns and we have only faced covid in the community this year because our previous short (up to 2 weeks only) lockdowns were effective at eliminating local transmission.

Unfortunately my weight is up about 7lbs higher than normal (too many Easter eggs and hot cross buns), so reading this thread has inspired me to get that back under control. I had a partial thyroidectomy last year and I know that I cannot take my good health for granted as I would prefer not to have to take medication to regulate my thyroid.

I train for karate (3 days a week), go to the gym (2 days a week) and on the other days usually will have a walk. I enjoy the exercise that I do, so it never feels like a chore and my karate school is an important part of my life socially not just for fitness. I got my 2nd Dan black belt in December 2021, so I was training hard for that. It would not take too much additional training to get back to my black belt level of fitness if required.

@ JAileen, MsMaven, and all the other gardeners - isn’t it amazing how no matter how much you consider yourself fit and ready for it, gardening can reveal muscles you didn’t know you had?

At the moment I am feeling fit and strong and focussing on exercise that I like. I lost fitness in the second half of 2021 with influenza that I was just recovering from when we went into lockdown. In lockdowns I find I walk and bike and yoga, but struggle to do HIT or run (mentally). My apple watch stats are back where they were a year ago but it took a while (I also took off the watch in January as I fell off my bike and damaged my watch and it took me a month to replace it).

I have a routine
- one weights a week
- one HIT class
- two- three walks, sometimes replaced by a run
- bike to work once a week
- yoga once a week

The bike to work day is weather and work dependant and I can only double up with the weights and the yoga - I can't bike after the HIT or hill walks, so there is some movement.

I have a goal of walking up six mountains/peaks this year, and I have done two so far.

I think our medical system is quite different to the US - so I haven't missed anything, but I am due a mammogram. I don't know if they are behind schedule or not.

I also am having some laser treatment on some small red capillaries on my nose that have sprung up.

Irina and StagF - hope the injuries recover well. It is not always easy is it.

I walked to the office and back pre-pandemic. Once we were switched to WFH, my husband and I went for a walk every evening hoping to compensate and tried to do one big walk on weekends. I wanted to be more active and started swimming last winter. But healthy lifestyle is dangerous! In February I was coming back from the pool, slipped and fell, broke my leg. I was only allowed to put any weight on it last week. So, months of PT are ahead, I’ve been exercising all this time, it is essential for my recovery but I miss walking like crazy. Prior to my accident, I did my regular, yearly physical and everything was fine, no change in last two years.

Overall I've done pretty well until the last few months. Physical therapy for my neck/upper mid-back last summer was great--really helped not only back and neck, but overall I am more limber and stronger. I keep admiring my thigh muscles--I thought they were fading away. Hill walking and the exercises I do have really helped. Now I need to go back to my physical therapist because gardening has caused some lower back problems and I have sciatica again.

At first I had to put off tests, but am now back, but behind schedule. At the start of the lockdown my doctor moved her office--too far away. I put off finding a new one, but eventually did. She's ok and I have an appointment with her at the end of June. Now everything is scheduled for months in advance.

We've had a lot of re-landscaping done on our front hill corner, so we've had workers here off and on and my hill-walking schedule has fallen off. I'm trying to get all my routines back. I've been gaining weight since our family cruise at the beginning of the year. I know what has gone wrong--too many sweet treats to comfort ourselves. Mr. Maven too, we both want to lose the 8-10 pounds we've gained.

Almost every day I give thanks for how healthy I am. We've avoided Covid, but turning 80 and realizing how much better off I am than friends and family, I don't want to rely on good luck to stay healthy. I need to do my part.

Thanks for starting this thread, Carla. It helps!

Peri, that must be so tough! Good for you for moving ahead with what you need to do for your body.

In a much lighter vein, I just took a “scary” step. Friend I flirt with long distance—I think we’d both like to date—was a natural bodybuilder, still does 1200 lb leg presses & has legs like trees. He’s a fitness trainer—we met in the gym and he appreciates that I try to keep my body in order. I just sent him pix of my leg with the bruise last summer and my miserable training log, explaining that when my legs are this weak & skinny (he’s already noticed that part), I don’t know what to do. Asked for his help. He will know, but EEEK showing my scrawny self when I’d rather be sexy seductive!

The first summer of the pandemic my husband was losing a lot of weight but we didn't have his cancer diagnosis yet. We just thought it was the lack of restaurant lunches he used to eat daily at work. So I started making him every dessert he wanted because I had time and he needed to put some weight back on. Well...he kept losing and I started gaining. About 12 pounds at my highest.

We also lost my main form of exercise because we couldn't do ballroom. I added walking our new dog, but nothing really beats serious ballroom practice for me and I didn't push to find any outdoor substitutes because I didn't have the bandwidth.

I've been doing a diet app that claims not to be about dieting but completely is and I've lost 9 pounds so far, not bad. I think my shape has changed too though because even though I'm within a few pounds of BC19, some of my clothes from that time no longer look or feel good. And we have started to resume ballroom, so that's another big thing to be grateful for.

Throughout, I kept up with my own health appointments because DH's Drs were clear they did not want me to neglect that. So beside the weight and the fitness loss, I'm okay otherwise except for the PTS from it all. I need to explore home workouts more and make time for them though...I walk and stretch but I know I need to do more. Thanks for the inspiration Carla! I'm a combo of busy and lazy and that's an issue...I wonder if there is a way to turn this into a "rehab your fitness" club for the support.

I gave up on any medical/dental appointments at the beginning. I also changed jobs 4 times, so a lot of time was spend waiting for those benefits to kick in. My insurance from my new job is just about to kick in, and I will start the long and tedious process of getting caught up on everything. There is testing that really needs to be done.
When the shutdowns first hit us, I was working a retail job where I stood and walked a lot all day. It was hard on me physically (cement floors), but it did help to keep me somewhat active. So when our store closed, and I was stuck in my 400 sq. foot zero bedroom apartment with just my cat, I turned to exercise for my mental health as well as just something to do and a way to get out. I spent a lot of time walking, and a lot of time doing yoga. When we went back to work, I was in great shape, had lost weight, had finished my bachelors degree, and was in a good place mentally. Working in retail during a pandemic changed that. I didn't have the time or energy to devote to as much or intense an exercise routine. My work decided to feed the staff for free, which was great for the wallet but the fatty food caused me to gain some weight back. After nearly a year of that, I got my first "real" job (fulltime, requiring a degree). I went from standing and walking all day to sitting at a desk, and of course I gained more weight. I switched to a different job where I was working from home and in the field. I was spending a lot of time in my car and fast food was the easy thing a lot of days. I moved to another organization doing the same job, moved in with the mister, and both wedding planning and perimenopause symptoms became really serious. I started losing the definition in my waist, even though we were walking every day and eating healthier.
About 10 years ago, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I was able to get my symptoms under control and it has not been too big of an issue since. During the last year, I have dealt with a lot more symptoms, a serious flare and possible progression. I've also had a ton of stress. Things that I used tobe able to do easily, I just can't anymore...and I'm not sure if I ever will be able to again. It's not something I talk much about, but it's the reality of what I'm dealing with. It's also why I can just accept my body as it looks now, and buy clothes that fit without getting too caught up on weight/size. I wish I could do more physically, but I know that many people with fibromyalgia are not able to work or exercise at all. I try to focus on being thankful for what I can do.

My situation has been spotty for the last couple of years. We were eating better in some ways because we were cooking at home more, but also I was baking more treats and indulging the sweet tooth — still an issue to this day.

No gym membership here, and I am sure I could use some weight training but I really don’t like going to gyms and have learned I don’t use them enough to justify the cost. We have a Peloton and now a Hydrow, and I really like the Hydrow especially. If you get your form right, you can get a really good full body workout in 20 minutes. But I’m not disciplined about doing it most days.

I love being outdoors and would much rather be hiking in the woods or cycling. But it’s so weather-dependent, and it’s become really hazardous to ride on the roads around here. And now in warm weather, ticks are a constant worry in the woods. Ugh, always something!

Medical appts — I’m getting back on my regular dental/periodontal cleaning schedule after a gap during Covid. I’m due for a gum procedure that I’m dreading and putting off. I have kept up with yearly GYN appts and mammograms, and I just got a notice that it’s time for my second colonoscopy (first was five years ago).

My weight is still up, about 10-15 lbs than I would like it to be, but the last time it was 15 lbs lower was when I was running half marathons and I think I’m done with that — too much training and commitment and too hard on knees. I’d be content to drop about 5-10 just so my clothes fit easier. I am a little concerned about my blood pressure as I think it’s been borderline the last couple times I’ve gone to the doctor. I’m pretty active on a daily basis but it’s not enough to lose weight without working on it.

TL:DR — I need to consistently eat better and add some weight training. ;-D

Good for you for being consistent in the gym and progressing! I swam over the winter, in a 25 m pool. Now the 50 m one is open again and I’m back the gym, supposedly doing upper body twice a week, two leg days, a yoga class, and a swim, but the actual log is much more spotty than that. A full-body weights routine did not help, just meant I did less, fewer times a week.

I worked out through much of the pandemic, setting up a “gym” with water bottles at home, then working out with a PT/trainer for months after I broke my foot (the injury didn’t need so much PT, but he had weights & other equipment). Then after a leg injury last summer, any kind of exercise hurt for months, not just lifting but even kicking when I swam. I gave up and now my legs are unrecognizable. The uninjured one is nearly as weak as the one that was hurt, because I cut out everything legs. They were always just strong, whether playing soccer or pushing off pool walls or whatever, starting when I was quite young, and now that’s gone. It’s a very strange feeling. I’ve never understood people who don’t want to lift weights because it’s hard/they can’t do heavy stuff. Now I get it. For unilateral quad extensions, I started with just a couple plates. It was no fun! I’m making progress, slowly—thank goodness for the training log, because when I feel bad about what I’m lifting, seeing the progress in my chart cheers me up.

I’ve recently come across the equipment in this picture, am curious who else has seen/used it, and what you thought. It is http://www.five-Konzept.de

ETA, I see “coming back”, whether from illness, weight gain, or injury, is a common theme in this thread—such inspiring posts before mine! Carla, thanks for starting the thread.

ETAA: on food/diet: I usually drop weight in the summer. This year I’m pushing it. I’ve dropped my calories from my usual 1600-1700/day to 1200, including a minimum 100 g of protein. This is entirely for vanity’s sake.

Great efforts by others at maintaining and progressing! Your exercise program sounds really good, Carla. Anne, congratulations on the race today! Aquamarine, that was good perseverance to change your diet to be so healthy.

As to medical maintenance, kept my every-six-months dental hygiene appointments, and scheduled mammograms which were on twice a year for keeping track of what was determined to be only a tiny cyst.

Food (and weight maintenance) was pretty easy as I made a habit of writing out good menu plans, shopped online and picked up grocery orders for the most part. This helped us avoid sweets, snacks and boredom. We still had some carry out meals as occasional treats.

Exercise was a little harder. I basically quit lifting weights and doing stationary bike and rowing machine when the gym closed. But I did keep running three 5-mile runs a week from March 2020 through October 2021. Then I got a hamstring injury from going back to an exercise class when our senior rec center restarted. That was a bad news thing, as then I did stop running, had to take PT for two months, gained 4-5 pounds since it was also over the holidays, and also had to get back in condition after PT was concluded and we finally got some decent weather. Not running also contributed to very bad emotional patch during March and April.

Now I am happy to be back running since early April, losing the extra pounds and feeling more myself every day.

I hope everyone can get what they need to stay healthy in mind and body.

I gained weight the first year, and my blood work/BP numbers were borderline at my physical in late 2020. By late spring of 2021, I decided enough was enough and committed to losing weight by eating 80% vegan (most of the time) and *really* working out again. (Lots of walking, some jogging, and occasional biking). Not going to lie, it was hard and I was cranky. But I stuck with it and the weight slowly came off, plus some. I feel better and have more energy. I’m also able to cope better with all the stresses right now.

I also caught up with the delayed medical and dental stuff…I needed hand surgery, a gum graft, mammogram. Check ✅

Glad to hear your news and that things are getting back to normal, Carla!

We've had it much easier than most, but there have been lots of gaps in gym attendance, partly due to closures and partly because my gym is part of my work building so I don't get to it, or my pilates classes there if I am working from home (and only work 3 days any way) cycling commuting similarly suffers, though I did manage some to compensate to some extent with cycling during lockdown. Weights probably not back to pre pandemic. (also gym changed management and I am still getting accustomed)
Running pretty much continued apart from a lull in 2020, though less events on. The last couple months have been harder, with having to isolate when DD had covid and then having it, albeit mildly, myself. Definitely not where I had planned to be at this point, but managed a slow 10k this morning.

Health wise I finally caught up with getting my iron checked and had an iron infusion on Thursday. I have also given up coffee (which I never liked and often made me feel off) since covid and that is going well so far.

…should I add ‘in the new normal?’

After a two year absence from the local YMCA (gym) I renewed my membership, and the training program I abandoned in early 2020 when gyms first shut down due to Covid. It’s been 10 weeks now, and I’ve availed myself of the weight room 3 x a week, along with 2 yoga classes a week. Weights used are at 3/4’s of where I was, and progressing.

The practice that looks after my health booked a bunch of routine tests (mammogram, colon cancer check, blood work) and I have a full ‘physical’ scheduled for the end of June. I was due back in 2020, but since I am generally in good health, routine stuff was put off while health care providers dealt with more urgent matters. They are now getting caught up, and it’s my turn!

Though the world is far from normal, I have to admit that I feel happier since resuming a routine that is important to my physical (and mental!) well being. I’ll be glad when I’m done the health evaluation, and will use the results as my ‘baseline’ as a 60+ yo and chart a course for health management going forward.

How have you managed your fitness, health, and wellbeing over the past two years? Did some things get put by the wayside while you focused on other priorities? or did you discover new strategies? Have you resumed old routines or discovered new ones? If you have let routine medical health management slide, I hope this acts as a prompt to book those tests and exams - and any shots you might need to update!

…and please be gentle with yourself. The past two years have been unprecedented for upheaval…
