Oh, I admire all of you being so incredibly healthy with your eating. Mine is good most of the time, but I have to confess to being easily tempted by my dietary nemesis (wine and cheese).

Am feeling very noble because I've just run another 5km today on a 0.5% incline on my treadmill. I'm working it up to 1% to mimic outdoors running, but am so pleased to finally feel like I am getting fitter.

On a slightly annoying note, my boobies seriously broke my MP3 player that I use when running on the treadmill. I know, only *I* could do something as silly as that! You see, I had it strapped under my bra-strap and it somehow worked its way down to the bottom of my bra. I thought to myself when it happened, "People are not going to want to see me grappling with my hand down my top as I run on the treadmill" (picture the image - glamourous, right?) so I left it and kept on running. Bad move. The sweat and the heat caused it to suddenly stop working. And despite my best CPR efforts, it just won't restart. ARRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH! Learn from my mistakes ladies, learn from my mistakes....

Hope you all have a fit, active and healthy weekend!

Shannon, try it! The first week was really hard for me - almost like detox from sugar and extra carbs. But now I feel really good, and I don't crave sugar any more. Things like juice taste really sweet to me undiluted. I modified the food plan slightly for myself, but even sticking to the basic principles has made a huge difference. At least for me, because I didn't eat enough fresh veggies or fruits before. If you do already, the transition won't be as hard. It's nothing like Atkins or other weird diets, although the most extreme version was too much for me.

Katie - you are very motivated to do that much. How are you feeling today?:-)

Alicat - would love to try Zumba sometime - I wish our gym offered it.

I did a very easy 500m swim yesterday and today joined the ladies I sometimes run with. Some of them are much faster than I, and I told them today it was my running ambition at the moment to keep up with them for a whole run. I turned back early, and did about 5km.

I have to check out this Eat to Live plan - I would like to take off 10 - 15 pounds to get back to my WW goal weight but am finding it really difficult to lose now that I'm in menopause. My body belongs to someone else these days!!! But my knee is getting stronger and stronger and I'm now up to exercising 3-4 days per week and am starting to put running back into the fitness plan. I did a fabulous cardio ball class today - 55 minutes of high intensity cardio while never letting go of an exercise ball. I was a sweaty but happy mess at the end of it!

I really like this thread - it's so encouraging to hear how fit and healthy you all are!

Thanks so much for your advice Anne. I'm thinking that I'm actually going to need to put a little thought into my distances, in order to not burn myself out. I love it that you are so similar to me in many ways, running around the place! I hope your hand feels better soon. I hurt my back last week and know how incredibly frustrating it can be.

I'm going to head off to the gym in a moment. I've decided after yesterday's effort that I will cross train today on the elliptical trainer for 35 minutes and then 6 minutes on the stepper, as a friend "double dared" me to do it. I am a complete sucker for a dare, even though I have heard horror stories about how much the stepper actually exhausts you. I'm still trying to work out what to triple dare her with - I was thinking three minutes of continuous plyometrics?

EDITED AFTER WORKOUT: Oh my goodness, why didn't you all warn me - I swear that stepper nearly killed me - I did 7 minutes and my hamstrings, quads and butt most certainly knew about it! I think my friend needs FOUR minutes of plyometrics to make it even.... (I also did 30 minutes on the elliptical and another 12 minutes running 8.8km/hr on a 1% incline. I'm tired now, but it was worth it.)
Have a great workout everyone!

Well I was on WeightWatchers for a while but that was a bust. I did eliminate most carbs but during "that time of the month", it's difficult. I crave sweets like crazy and I just want to eat all the sweets up :(

Other than that, I've lost 7 lbs since January so it's good. My weight has stabilized for two weeks now, but I'm consistently losing inches on my bust and waistline. I increased my exercises (at least once a week... yay!) and I walk everywhere (because it's not a bad winter this year). I'm also training for a 10K in May so I started running as well.

Oh and I've only gotten sick ONCE this winter. It's only a month of winter left. Fingers crossed!

Jane, sorry to hear about this sadness

KP well done. My advice would be to gradually increase one run a week, so next time it is 6.5, then 7 and so on. But keep your other runs in the week shorter, maybe 3 or 4 kms and then you can increase them a little too, up to 5 or 6 each time. Never increased your overall distance by more than 10% a week. Every 4 weeks cut back a little on the distance to have a break (unless, like me, you have a break anyway, because you get a cold, or life gets busy).
I do increase my long runs faster than that myself when I am getting back to training, but I have been running on and off for quite a while. I am not great at running continuously, and sometimes walk for 5-10m or so. I did 7km on Sun but had a loo break half way, so not continuously!

I did a lower body weight session this morning and then did 6 x 30secs of interval training. Sadly I hurt my wrist getting the bar down and I am thinking I might have to lay off the weights a little until it gets better. Typing probably not great for it either so I'll stop now.

Jane, I'm sorry to hear about your dog, that is very sad news.

I am coming in to whisper that I ran 6km continuously for the first time today. Yippee! I know I have a long way to go to reach my ultimate fitness goals, but am very happy that I've reached this point as three months ago, I couldn't even run for 5 minutes. My next goal is to work up to 10km. Any advice from seasoned veterans?

Anyway, well done everybody - I am verrry impressed with all the activity and achievements!

We've been eating much healthier & reducing our portion sizes but I haven't been to the gym since I was laid low with a viral infection. I am still really lacking in energy but I did go swimming last week & it's yoga tomorrow.

I was going to get back in the gym this afternoon but unfortunatly we had to make a heartbreaking decision about our dog today so I spent the afternoon crying my eyes out at home instead.

My step-son has introduced me to MyFitnessPal where I've been logging a food diary every day which I'm finding really helpful. I've never paid any attention to calories & fat contents and it's really useful to know which things to cut back on.

Funny about the rice, I just took a picture of my lunch to show you. This salad has a vaguely local flavor because of the warm brown rice/avocados/cilantro/lemon added to a regular salad. I like Trader Joe's 21 Seasoning Salute. That plus a squeeze of fresh citrus plus a drizzle of EVOO rivals the taste of any bottled salad dressing.

While I don't claim to know much about Indian cuisine, I LOVE curry. Last night I had a bowl of brown rice with chopped cooked broccoli on top. A bit of EVOO, lots of curry powder and a generous dollop of fat free plain Greek yogurt to cool the burn and I was in heaven. YUM!

Thanks for your black bean soup recipe. I have some in the cabinet and that sounds like the perfect thing to use them for!

Wow, Manipada, losing with those modifications is a huge selling point! I'm not hugely tempted by bread or meat, but I find it hard to live without rice and curry (Indian or Thai), so I'm using brown rice. I'd really like my husband to do it, but he is a meat and potatoes kind of guy. My little guy is actually drinking spinach smoothies with me, but I'm certainly not restricting his diet in any way, just adding in healthy things - he is so active and still growing, one thing the book does not really address.

Claire, thanks for the recipe - I just bought avocados! Here's one of mine:

2 cans rinsed black beans
One can of water
One can chopped tomatoes
Chopped onion
Minced garlic
Spinach
Cumin
Cayenne

Saute onions and garlic, add everything else, cook and mash some of the beans for thickness. Voila! Lazy black bean soup.

Hmmm...things are OK on the fitness end, but I've gained back the weight I lost since the holidays. 3 pounds on my frame makes a huge difference. And I've got travel in the near future, which does not bode well for having good eating habits, even though I pack my own oatmeal, etc.

Ha! Another 'Eat to Live' modifier here! I just have to be left alone to kind of follow it, not strictly either, and my weight drops gently even with ZERO exercise.

The hard part is not the diet, for me --- I actually followed it pretty strictly once upon a time.* It's the people around me tempting me with things I COULD do without --- lovely French pastries and German bakery breads, the cakes and rice and potatoes my husband craves, the meats that friends NEED to complete a meal...

*The only bit I can't handle is the caffeine embargo. I have naturally low BP and tend to hypoglycaemia (strictly idiopathic!). And migraines. As a result, my gynae and GP actually want me on coffee! Go figure!

But yes, it IS hard to follow exactly when life gets stressful or social. I added back dairy and chocolate too, and probably have a little more fat than Fuhrman would have liked. Even this modified version has got me down four kilos in the last six months, and that's with never refusing an invitation to eat out, no restrictions when eating out, plus several lavish meals for professional reasons. Count me sold, even though I'm not at target weight yet!

I too was ill most of last month --- bad, bad allergies that morphed into a bunch of infections --- so exercise has been on exile (can't breath too well). YLF's my 'breather' at the moment, between overshot deadlines and left-too-late seasonal closet switch.

I just realized yesterday that some of the clothes that fit perfectly at New Year's suddenly don't fit right. That's a problem, though it WAS the goal, because I can't go shopping for replacements yet. Ack!

Good for you MaryK! Poor Mo! Stuck in a car. You'll get there soon.

Una, I had to modify too. Here's a recipe made up that's a really good dip if you like guacamole. I've taken it to my home church meeting three weeks in a row and everyone practically licks the plate clean. (Avocados have been 5 or 6/ $1 lately)

4 ripe avocados mashed in a pie or quiche plate along with
1 fresh jalepeno pepper minced fine
2 cloves of garlic minced fine
The white part 2 green onions minced fine
juice of one lemon or lime
sea salt to taste
mash together and spread out.
On top of this layer:
shredded jack or cheddar cheese (omit for vegan version)
2 roma tomatoes diced really fine
a handful of fresh cilantro diced fine
the green part of your 2 green onions from above
This is really yummy, healthy and your breath will smell for days! But good!
Use with tortilla chips or vegetables to dip with.

Cheers!

I have been doing reasonably well. At least I am below my "red light panic" weight. And today the Marine and I actually went to the workout room where we are staying and put in an hour with the weights, treadmill, and elliptical.

In the midst of a long drive from FL to CA so fitness is some push ups when I remember at the motel before bed or stretching on rest stops. It's hard to sit still for so long!! But oddly, just being on the road (not even being the driver) makes me tired and not in the mood to exercise when we get out of the car. I am looking forward to using our home gym when we finish the drive

Claire, how funny! I never do diets or read books about diet plans, but two things led me to this one. First, I met a woman (while filming the commercial I did) who was in her mid-60s and just gorgeous. She was eating some interesting lunch thing and as we started talking, she told me she and her husband had each lost over 50 pounds on the plan. She said it was really a lifestyle change rather than a diet. Then my brother, who worked for Dr. Oz at the time (now he's working for Anderson Cooper!), told me Dr. Oz endorses it as well.

It's really designed for people as an option to gastric bypass surgery for weight loss, from what I can tell, but it seems quite healthy and I've modified it a bit to account for not needing to lose a lot of weight and being quite active. So I haven't given up all dairy, for instance. For those who haven't heard about it, the book is called "Eat To Live" by Dr. Joel Fuhrman.

The recipes are BORING IMHO, but I'm adding Indian twists to make them more varied. It's basically eating all you want of raw and cooked green veggies, fruits and beans, and limited amounts of other healthy things like nuts, avocados, and certain grains.

So far all I've noticed is that my skin looks better and I feel and sleep better - which could also be due to exercising. But I've also lost weight and size, and adding more green veggies to my diet certainly can't hurt.

I'm glad to hear from someone else who's tried it!

Janet and I are training for the same Rock and Roll Half marathon here in DC. I managed to get back from NYC last Sunday and run 10 miles in the frigid windy temps but that was it for running. I was very busy with work and had a chance to take a class on MOnday, and then run 6 miles on Tuesday and that was it until today. I ran 11.6 miles today but boy...do my buns ache. Gotta get some major stretching in.

Is this a weekly thread Una? I haven't noticed it before. Anyway, I'm hoping to get back on track this week with both eating and exercising. Last week was really cold outside, so no running for me, but hopefully this week, I will run 3 times and get back track on my eating. I want to lose the rest of the weight I want to lose by the summer, so I need to focus again. Right around Christmas I went on Maintenance with WW which has thrown me off course, a bit, so I need to get back on track.

OMG Eat to Live? I've done that and I have never met another living soul who has heard of it or tried it!!!! That is the healthiest diet on the planet IMHO. Even when I'm not *on* it, it's always in the back of my mind as the best way to eat. Love what he has to say about the "protein myth", etc. I had gained 6 pounds this winter and was doing a modified version of it, and it always works for me. I'm almost back to my fighting weight.

Not sure what my actual poundage is, but after all my swelling went down, I was super happy to discover that I've regained a flat stomach! (Amazing what removing a cantaloupe will do for ya). So now I'm inspired to get back into my running routine. I'm not ready to actually run yet, but today I went on my first uphill hike (as opposed to walking on the flat). We'll see how happy my belly muscles are about that by tomorrow morning. For now I feel good, and all energized. Fingers crossed!

I'm so glad you started a new fitness thread, Una!

My birthday is coming up in two months and I want to be feeling fly and fit by then. My work is cut out for me! Today I did a Husky walk this morning and a dance video this evening.

Weight gain not so good - gained about a pound over the week end and directly attibute it to a slice I made for visitors on Fri which I ate a good deal of, and some pre TOM eating as well. I ran 7km yesterday (that is my "long run atm) and am sort of getting my head around my plans for a half M in May (as per my thread on that).
I committed to this plan at the gym to lose 1kg so that I could win a weeks gym membership for a friend, but I am not really very committed and am gaining instead of losing. Find eating hard while fatigued from exercise a little difficult.
