When my running watch/heart rate monitor gave up the ghost last year, I ended up buying an Apple watch: it does everything my former (admittedly simple) watch/monitor did, plus WAY more. I really like it. Counts steps, has gps, so can measure distances, running speeds, etc. Plus syncs helpfully with my iPhone, so buzzes me with directions, text messages. My phone must be nearby for those apps to work, tho.

I don't have a running watch, but I do have a fitbit AND I also use the Nike Running App for iPhone to log my runs. Their functions are different enough that I like both; fitbit has the HR monitor and pedometer which tracks how active your day to day is and the run app is more specific and has the maps, shows you where you were slowest, fastest, run time, etc.

Kim: No, you don't wear it really tight. The instructions tell you to wear it so that it can move back and forth on wrist. Mine is not uncomfortable.

I use a basic Jawbone to track my steps (it's silver and resembles a bracelet). If your running watch doesn't track steps then a Fit Bit or some sort of pedometer may be an interesting and useful addition!

Does the fitbit have to be worn close to the skin for the HR monitor to work? (That's the feature I'd like to use, a HR monitor without the chest strap.) I don't think I'd like that. I can't stand a tight watch, or band around my arm, I prefer bracelet style.

I have neither, so I'm interested in the discussion. I'm wondering if a family member will lend me a Fitbit so I can get a baseline. I don't want to wear one all the time.

Fitbit have been intriguing me (and even more so since Angie mentioned her 22000 daily steps). And some models are quite cheap now

BUT I already have a GPS running watch.

Is both overkill?

Discuss!
