Thanks Elisabeth and Angie. I somehow missed these replies before today.

I am certainly going to be on the watch for this fit problem from now on. With the recent preference for fitted blouses, it has become trickier for me. I'll keep the tailoring solutions in mind for garments that are worth the investment, and aim for blouses with unfitted waists as much as possible, to help them hang better on me. I just have a thick middle, and I'm going to have to learn to adjust my style around that. And the thickness is not just fat, which can be dealt with. It's bones and muscles too. I am not complaining here, just taking note of the fact that I can't ever aim for an elfin or a willowy look and expect to succeed. I can, on the other hand, succeed with other things. :o)

It's because your shoulders and bust aren't filling out the rest of the top, but the size is right because it fits the rest if your torso.

Once or twice I've had this fit problem on sheath dresses (I have a dainty shoulder line). A quick tuck alteration fixed it chop-chop

JR, I recently had an alteration done to take care of that problem. I don't have a lot of inward curve at the waist, either -- I have quite a narrow, rectangular figure, with what I think is called a sway back as well (my lower back curves inward). I took a fitted shirt to the tailor and she said they would have to adjust the shoulders at the armholes, which is an expensive alteration. I said I'd think about it. I came back a week later and had it pinned a second time by a different seamstress, and this time all she did was extend and deepen the vertical back darts -- much cheaper! And it solved the problem. No more bubbling at the upper back.

Yes, sorry I didn't make that clearer. I meant at the nape of the neck.

If a top is snug around the waist, I tend to get poof between the shoulder blades too, but that is because the top rides up. Fitted blouses tend to be difficult for me because of this. I just don't have enough inward curve at the waist for it to flatter me.

If it is at neckline it usually means shoulder seam needs to be adjusted forward or a back neck dart put in. Basically your body is curving more than garment was cut for leaving the extra volume poofing out.

Do you mean they poof out at the small of your back? Or right between your shoulder blades? Or nape of neck?

A lot of my tops tend to gape a bit at the back, right at the backbone. What is causing this? Are my shoulders too narrow? My boobs too big? How do I choose clothes to avoid this problem? It's not a huge thing, but it would be nice if my clothes fit better. It happens with knits too.
