In the minority here, but I think the Caslon shirt looks very pretty on you--softer, more feminine. I don't think that makes it less practical, really. Just different.

DonnaF, great suggestion about Foxcroft. I've looked at them and the quality is nice and I like to look of that one you posted...no pocket and a curvy shape. I will definitely check it out. I think I know what you mean about collars, although what I care about more is whether the collar seems to hold it's shape when unbottoned. The LE shirt does not get at A+ in that department, more like a C. The Caslon collar is not designed to hold it's shape the same way, so it's a different look.

Ryce, thanks I will definitely check out Foxcroft's web site, good idea. And I do need to take off my anti-Chico's goggles. I find a lot of their stuff too dramatic or something and I've ordered some petite items that were very poorly made and went back. I have a good friend who finds nice pieces there and with he addition of your recommendation perhaps I need to give them another chance. .

I echo Donna's suggestion about Foxcroft shirts. They offer petites. Nordstrom stocks them, as do other department stores. The company has it's own website that offers even greater variety.
Also, you'll think I'm crazy, but Chicos has some really nice buttonfront shirts and some of them come in petites. They do tend to be closer to tunic length, whick isn't great for tucking, but is a very flattering length to wear untucked. I have a basic black buttonfront from there that fits like a dream. I always get compliments when I wear it, which is unusual for such a basic item. People are shocked when I confess where I got it.

Chris, I am between sizes in Caslon, too. For whatever reason, Halogen shirts seem to fit me a little better. The softness of the Caslon makes me think additional darts wouldn't look quite right.

Have you ever tried Foxcroft shirts? They are cut for curves (don't pull in the bust or upper arms on me) and are cut generously in the hips which you can see from the stock photo.

I'm finding that I'm getting rather particular about where shirt collars hit me, and that if they are too high I don't like to wear them even if I don't button the top buttons. I think has to do with the width of that narrow piece between the body of the shirt and the collar itself. How about you?

Hah, I should have said I do plan to keep both! White shirts are a bit of a wardrobe essential for me.

Sterling - you are right about the LE one being more versatile.

Emily K I'll take a look at the JCrew one but I find that most JCrew tops don't fit me correctly; to get the right not-too-tight torso fit I end up with hems and sleeves that are way too long, even in petite sizes. However I have found a few items that do fit.

thanks Jaileen, RobinF, and smittie, celia

La Pedestrienne and Suz yes these do serve different purposes, as you say. I will try the semi-tuck idea.

Firecracker you nailed it exactly on that Caslon blouse. The shoulders ARE a little too big, which I needed to get it loose enough in the hips. Maybe I just settled for a style that didn't fit right. A button and waist darts would only partially help with that. And it IS a very soft and rumpled look, which I sometimes like and sometimes do not. I'll have to give this some more thought before I proceed with alterations.

Isabel you are right that the high contrast look isn't the best...and a colored shirt would have less of that issue. Maybe while I'm at it I could find one with more seaming that would fit even better.

Karen13 I like your lighter belt ideas. And I might go with a lighter wash jean. Lower contrast all around. What a great idea for that little belt thing in the back! It would take some work to get it into just the right position but would look good once it's there. Another way I've seen this done is to use a couple of rows of a thick elastic thread...with maybe buttons to anchor the ends.

I like both shirts and white looks good on you! I too am not a tucker, but one suggestion I got of adding a belt in the same color as the top made me think I might try it some day. Maybe a nude, light gray or even white -see if you like that better.

I recently bought the Ibex shirt ibelow that has a little detail gathering the back. It makes a tiny bit of shape at my waist - I am considering adding something like this to some other shirts - either a coordinating ribbon or using the annoying sleeve roll up tab that I never use (bonus - I could use the two extra buttons!). Maybe this would be an easy to add alternative to a dart on the Caslon. Try it with safety pins and a bit of ribbon.

The Lands End looks like it fits pretty well and I wouldn't get rid of it unless you don't enjoy wearing it. I've found that it's rare I wear a white tailored white shirt alone these days, or even just as a collar and cuffs layer but you may feel differently.
High solid color contrast between the top and bottom is a very challenging tucked option. Maybe with a darker top or print?
I agree with previous posters that the Caslon is very casual and looks like something to be worn in the summer.

I prefer the look of the LE shirt but realize it is more work to keep a crisp shirt crisp. I think I'd try semi-tuck just to see. I have a hard time wearing full tuck because it's just not as comfortable to me. The second gauze shirt is more casual and seems just a bit oversized but it still seems like it would work for the heat of summer.

You look great in the crisp white. I think you can also wear a tucked silhouette, but might feel better in a drapier shirt for that purpose, one that doesn't feel "stiff" or bunchy.

I think the Land's End shirt looks like a pretty good fit. It is not a fitted shirt silhouette, as it doesn't have waist darts in the front, so it fits more like a woman's version of a man's shirt. I quite like the look on you. It works tucked as well as out. You might try semi-tucking, too; I have a feeling it would look great.
To me, the Caslon one has some issues. As you've noted, it has a bigger silhouette all around. If it didn't have the pockets at the sides, I would say, wear it loose and semi-tucked as Emily K did in her WIW. But those pockets make it a tunic style blouse. It is also a bit too wide in the shoulders, so I don't think adding a button and taking waist darts in the back will give you the nice above-bust fit that you may be after. Also, don't you tend to prefer crisp looks? The fabric on the Caslon shirt looks more casual, what I think of as pleasingly rumpled. Personally I kind of like that quality, but it doesn't seem as keeping with your style.

Seems like these two tops might serve very different purposes -- the LE for under a sweater or jacket in the cooler months, the Caslon for standalone wear in warmer weather. I like the fit of the LE a bit better, but I have a real sugar eye for a traditional button front, crisp and fully tucked. Popover styles I find a bit more difficult; especially as a person with very little bust relative to my hips, I feel like they can dramatically emphasize/widen my hips. The only way they work for me is semi-tucked. That might be worth a try with the Caslon top.

The LE one does seem better fitting in the shoulders and sleeves but there is a lot of extra fabric in the middle. And I like the gauzy one for wearing by itself (not under a sweater or whatever) but the fit does seem a little off.

I've started to go through my spring wardrobe very carefully to get a clear sense of what I have. I would like to get some opinions from you, you, dear fabbers, on these two white shirts, especially in terms of fit. I'd like this look with nude loafers too, as shown by Emily K in her recent posting ""WIW 3/29 - for Angie"

1. Lands End basic white shirt, untucked. This brand is one of the few that fits me pretty well, in a petite size.
2. same shirt, tucked, with a black belt that's a bit thin for these belt loops, sleeves folded. I have stayed away from tucking shirts for a very long time, because I think it is not all that flattering on me. Do you agree?

3. Caslon gauzy shirt - seems a bit too big
4. same shirt with the back pulled in (I would add a long dart) and simulating adding another button to the top of the placket to pull the neckline in a little...sorry these pics do not show it all that well. . It's a bit too big overall but these alterations would make enough of a difference for me to keep wearing it, or so I'm thinking.

I have stayed away from tucking shirts for a very long time, because I think it emphasizes the worng things and is not flattering. Do you agree?

3. Caslon gauzy shirt - seems a bit too big
4. same shirt with the back pulled in to simulate a long dart, and simulating adding another button to the top of the placket to pull the neckline in a littlet It's a bit too big overall but these alterations would make enough of a difference for me to keep wearing it, or so I'm thinking.

What say you? Thanks!
