Jenn: I would attribute the color selections to the warm climate, not the age of the wearer. And HR guidelines aren’t nonsensical, the employer is clearly trying to avoid additional injuries. I slipped and fell at client site and the next time I visited, they had replaced the slippery tile with carpet.

The description of your boss's style cracks me up. I feel like I've known women like that, especially "women of a certain age." (My mom worked in the non-profit sector for many years and I could totally see this aesthetic on the directors at her YWCA.)

The mules rule is funny too. Insight into how those seemingly nonsensical guidelines come about.

I love the sound of the boss’s style! In NZ everyone wears sandals in the most conservative places, well the women do anyway. It’s only if it’s a safety problem that we don’t. Like my food technologist daughter is not allowed to in the food lab.
I think you will look fine!

You know what they say, dress for the job you want! You are lucky to have a boss with a great sense of style who can be your sister-in-arms as you get as creative as you can within the conservative constraints.

You always dressed nicely in your posts - should be all fine for your current work. Polished casual or relaxed business casual seems to be more the real thing than old "conservative" way of dressing at work.
Very interesting style of the boss lady .

Excepting the mules and tattoos, this has been the general guidelines of everywhere I've worked! Things that have been no nos in my workplaces too have been spaghetti straps, shorts, skirts shorter than 3 inch above knee, T shirts with writing, distressed jeans, flip flops, sneakers- the obvious kind of things.
Luckily you're allowed to wear sandals, cause summers would be miserable in closed shoes!

It sounds to me like as long as you don’t actually wear jeans, don’t bear your midriff and wear shoes that have some kind of back and can’t be confused with sneakers, your good to go. Otherwise the dress code would be more specific.

Arg that you don’t have good comparisons available from people in similar positions. Are the other people in your dept who you refer to above or below you in the hierarchy?

I don’t think I’ve ever had a job where the dress code was explicitly stated at onboarding. Were the bosses’ comments part of the standard spiel?

Mules can be a health and safety risk!! But of course so can platforms.

NZ dress codes are different but open toed sandals are suitable in all but the most conservative settings unless it is a health and safety reason (eg a factory). I don't think a defence lawyer would wear them in court but corporate lawyers in an office setting would.

It is interesting learning the way in these situations isn't it!!

Sounds like your boss has a fun sense of style and is open to some creativity within the rules. The mules thing makes sense given the case, but sandals should be fine from what you say.

I think your open toe booties should be ok, but of course check with boss. Sounds like she has an interest in fashion, which is good in the sense that you can speak the same "language," in a way.

At least this week's hot weather will give you a preview of acceptable summer wear.

Lana- there was an accident at their office involving mules that led to a workers comp case, so now all ladies shoes have to have a backstrap.
As I'm writing this, my coworker comes out in heeled, strappy wedge sandals.
On my way back into the office, I passed by the HR rep...also in open toes shoes.
LOL
I think my open toes will be fine!

I think the mule shoes is an interesting thing to ban. I used to work in a medical research center and the head of the lab wore 3” high mules that made a slapping sound when she walked along with the clicking: it was hilarious. Maybe that’s the reason, very distracting. I never wore anything but pumps/court shoes in that environment. I don’t know what kind of work you do, but closed toes are conservative to me for office attire, open toe might be pushing it. Could you ask?

Interesting!I ve never done an office job so haven’t had to negotiate this.l think it’s getting harder as generally as a society we are shifting towards more and more casual wear but peoples interpretation of casual can differ widely .l think you are wise to take your lead from your boss.

I am coming to the end of my first week in a new job in an office environment. This is the first time that I have ever worked in an office environment.
The official dresscode is not specified. The policy states appropriate office attire, and says conservative and professional. It mentions modesty and grooming. It bans athletic wear, jeans, and tank tops, leggings worn as pants, facial piercings and visible tattoos.
BUT we have casual Fridays when we can wear jeans, and Spirit days when you can wear athletic wear. The two specific items my boss mentioned as no-no's were hoodies and mule shoes.
Attire around the office varies a lot by position and department. Many people dress more casually than Business Casual. My boss is interesting because she wears very conservative styles in very loud colors and patterns.
For instance, a black and white striped sheath dress with neon pink pom-pom trim and a neon pink cardigan worn with black pumps or black slacks, black pumps, and a wrap top with a very loud and bright floral pattern.
The other people in similar positions to me are all men. A few of whom were retired and called back to help out part time for a limited amount of time. They wear dress slacks and dress shirts. The other members in my department wear casual button down shirts and casual pants.
I have on my new Miz Mooz sandal booties with the open toe today. It seems fine- I have seen other women in sandals. But I don't want to buy more open toed shoes until my boss sees them.
