We have been in our small downsized home 21/2 years. It does not seem possible. I am ready to do a major clean and purge what is not working. Plus the yard and plants. Some are getting old and should be removed. I am not sure I like what the landscaper came up with.

Good for you! Every little bit helps and feels good.
I've been trying to weed out the excess from all of my life. I don't ever think I'll get to THE END, but I will get to more of a happy place with the amount of STUFF I have (clothes being a major portion). You didn't accumulate it in a day, so don't think it will be gone that fast either. Sounds like you're doing GREAT!

It is overwhelming, but I also think it helps give you some sense of control as you noted.

I did a whole home remodel last year while my youngest was a senior in HS (can you say denial?) and even after almost a year back in the house, I'm still cleaning and organizing. It's been a good opportunity to think about where I want "stuff" and where I don't. Lots of trips to goodwill, and some good opportunities to revisit old favorites while deciding whether I"m ready to pass them on. (Kids stuffed animals and soccer jerseys need to stay for a while longer. Old pictures need a new home.)

Enjoy it as a process - and congrats on the cleaned spaces!

Sorry for the late response. I'm still in the midst of this massive endeavor. It's comforting to know that I'm not alone in this mission and that many of you have experienced the same thing with a major life change. It's still overwhelming but I keep reminding myself that this is a process--it's not like I'm moving house just yet. I figure if I do something every weekend, I'll get there eventually.

The pleasure of the purge is real, isn’t it? Takes a lot of energy, though, both physical and mental. Congrats! I am impressed you were able to let go of your low rise and very distressed jeans, by the way. I have been unable to do that, even though I don’t wear them.
Good luck with the house edit!

Congratulations! I'm still in the middle of my crisis, have been getting rid of items but still very stuck on items that were mistakes and pricey I keep hoping I'll grow to like them and lets not talk about sandals and shoes that are virtually brand new and uncomfortable It's making me feel badly about myself and I clearly need to get a grip.

We all do clean-ups from time to time, but certain life events precipitate a greater degree of churn. Tidying up is something you can control during uncertain times and a big purge is like pushing the 'reset' button. Your personal closet is something where you get to make the decisions.

I had to do a total home edit when we moved 5 years ago after almost 20 years in our previous home. Did a partial closet edit after retiring one year ago, but a second, deeper, purge this past October. By Christmas we had fine tuned the house contents as well in preparation for a rec room renovation. (The rec room was the 'junk drawer' of the house prior to the renovation.). I was blindsided by how psychological the experience has been. When you part with an item it is saying 'goodbye' to something. Maybe getting rid of unpleasant baggage, but possibly giving up something that was once meaningful. It's tied up with life changes and even good changes can be stressful.

It does feel good doesn't it? DH and I are moving and all three kids will be living on their own starting next month and it is very strange! So I have been kondo-ing like crazy. I also don't want to move any furniture that I don't love or that doesn't have a distinct use so we have been getting rid of that type of stuff too. I still have a lot of work ahead so am not feeling the relief yet but I'm sure it will happen.

Good on you! I’ve been doing the same thing, one out of college last year, The middle will graduate next spring and one at home. Oldest daughters bedroom was turned into an extra closet complete with large hanging wardrobe. Gone as of two weeks ago and now I’m redecorating the room. All kinds of rearranging of furniture from one room to the next. My middle daughter who is a bit more sensitive... I’ll leave her room generally the same. For now! Big basement purge too. It really does feel good

I am really feeling the finality of having my kids come home for extended periods of time during their school breaks......so I have been Kondoing like crazy!! LOL! It’s amazing I have anything left!

I once read a book called Shed Your Stuff, Change Your Life by Julie Morgenstern. The main idea is that these major edits prepare us for whatever is next in our lives. Her main goal is to help people in the midst of career changes. She believes that a good edit frees our minds and opens us to new possibilities. I had a major job change two years ago when a program that I had worked at for 19 years precipitously closed. At first I felt depressed about the loss. Then, I remembered that book, so I thought I would give it a try. I spent a few weeks cleaning and culling in every space of my house before deciding on an approach for my future. It’s a bit corny, but it helped. I came up with a wonderful plan that might not have occurred to me otherwise. Cleaning is truly cathartic, and can also be instructive, and therapeutic. Maybe I should be prescribing it!

Good job, well done. This type of sort absorbs quite a lot of emotion IMO.So good when it is done though and that feeling of lightness is undeniable!
