devon7 - yes, sounds great! I've gotten into fashion a lot more about the last few years and now have a pretty good idea about what looks good on me and what doesn't. Looking forward to sharing ideas with each other.

lawdiva and bran888, I think we all have very similar body types. The "low hip" description fits me, too. I definitely gain weight first in my low hips and thighs, but I have broad shoulders and a defined waist. My shoulders are 2 inches bigger than my hips and my hips are about 9 inches bigger than my waist. I am 5'10" and my body looks VERY similar to lawdiva's (except I'm taller). Maybe we can all help each other with outfits! I need to get the camera thing figured out so I can start to take and post photos. I'm a techie person but not so great with a camera, but I can learn!

I think that you look like an hourglass with a low hip (like me), but shoulders to balance out the hip/thigh area. I generally find that hourglass guidelines work well, but sometimes pear guidelines come in handy. For instance, I don't like to wear cardigans or shirts that hit at my low hip/widest part, and anything with pockets or whiskering on the hips/thighs is a no-no. On the other hand, I don't need to make my shoulders look broader or hide my lower half in large a-lines all of the time either as pear guidelines typically suggest.

You look like you have a defined waist to me. I think that the waist to hip ratio is a better measure than inches though. If the waist to hip ratio is lower than 0.75, your waist is considered "defined" and the lower the ratio, the more defined it is. If you're close to 0.75 or above, you might want to consider rectangle rules.

Thanks very much for the prompt feedback Angie and all! I really appreciate it. I think hourglass is probably right, although my thighs/hips are always where I end up gaining weight. I always thought hourglasses had a prominent bust, which I definitely don't. But reading Angie's description of hourglasses made me realize that not all hourglasses are busty.

I don't think I'm a rectangle because I have at least an 9 inch difference between my waist and hips (the shirt I'm wearing in this picture is a bit baggy, so I know it's hard to tell).

devon7, I'm 5'5.

Very excited to join this great community! Thanks.

Devon7, I'd think a slim hourglass is a girl with the hourglass shape and a slim body. Like you are, by the way.

Angie - What is the distinction between a "slim hourglass" and standard hourglass? Less curviness? If that is the case, then I am a slim hourglass, too. Trinny and Susannah (of the original What Not to Wear show) call this type of body a "vase" and that's what I came up as when I took a test they had on body types.

Lawdiva - how tall are you? It's hard to tell from the photo, but I'm guessing medium height. You look great and very well proportioned!

I'd say an hourglass, too. It's a bit difficult to see how defined your waist is in relation to hips and shoulders, but if there is not a huge variance, you might have rectangle tendencies (as a secondary type). Look at Angie's dressing suggestions for both those types. And welcome! I am a new member, too, and have found the women here to be sensational!

Your body type looks very similar to mine and I've had 2 image consultants tell me I'm an hourglass. You look quite proportionate, with a good shoulder line and a defined waist. Sometimes I feel like a pear, too, but I think we are both hourglasses.

I recently de-lurked, too, and am enjoying participating in this forum. I look forward to seeing and hearing more of you!

Hi ladies, I am a daily lurker (actually, several times a day lurker) but have never posted a picture on this site until now. I would love some feedback on my body type. I am generally one size larger on bottom on top which makes me feel that I am a pear, but sometimes I feel I look like an hourglass. Thoughts?
