Wanted to redo our bathroom first but with the floor of the downstairs torn up and cold air coming in through the temporary plywood, it’s more important now. I cleaned all day Saturday and basically crashed all day Sunday — read a novel, played Scrabble on my phone, watched Slow Horses, did some laundry. </p> <p>Today it’s back to reality. Still haven’t heard from the insurance adjuster. Need a HVAC company out here to give a full assessment of replacing the system (it was basically drowned). Need to go to the courthouse and file for eviction of my tenant who has now not paid rent in four months. And it’s the anniversary of my dad’s passing 32 years ago. Trying not to pile on, but… it’s a day. When I was seven, my home burned and we had to live in a rented house for several months. It was tough on my parents, with five little ones (I am the oldest), and they did a lot of work themselves after the structure and roof were repaired. I vividly remember the smell of smoke (smelling the same today brings back memories of that January night), watching the fire trucks from my neighbor’s window across the street, and later, the heavy smell of black tar adhesive which mom used to stick down new linoleum tiles in most of the rooms. One of my friends owns a ServiceMaster franchise so if we have trouble with the smoke smell after our efforts, I’ll probably contact him. I know there is a whole industry there — and a bunch of ambulance chaser types! We had three people show up at our driveway behind the emergency vehicles, a couple of texts and even phone calls and emails from people wanting our business! I’m sure they listen to the scanners, but how opportunistic is that!? I had former maids who shifted their business over to that side of cleaning...disaster repair like fire, smoke and flooding. She said they do smoke all the time and have methods to get the smell out.
