My original post has been updated to reflect the changes I've made in my wardrobe. Deleted a few more items, added a few more in, and completely renumbered the post to reflect my new wardrobe status.

The gray jeans did not fit well at all, and I have not found any other pair in a wash I like, so I am forgetting about gray jeans for now. My light wash skinny's will do for now.

I am considering selling my light chambray and my black silk blouse. Both still have the tags on them.

The light chambray is slightly large on me, and just doesn't appeal to me the way the dark chambray does.

The black silk blouse is from j crew, the silk pocket blouse. However, I am too afraid to wear it, because of the fragile material. Also, I find that I prefer the style of the Express Portofino shirt better, so I may sell the silk blouse to get a black portofino shirt, since I am less concerned about the material of the portofinos. I am just too scared to wear silk.

I'm also questioning how much I will actually wear the black skinny jeans. They honestly don't look any different from wearing black leggings, and when it comes down to choosing between wearing jeans or leggings, I will choose leggings. But, it may be a good choice to keep them around anyway.

thanks for the replies everyone.

Caved and purchased those items on my wishlist, even though my budget didn't really appreciate it right now, haha.

Feel a bit guilty because I was trying so hard to downgrade, and ended up bringing stuff in, but I still have fewer pieces than I started with when I first posted, and am happier with those new pieces.

The gray jeans and dark chambray are likely going to be essential staples of my fall capsule, so I do think it will be worth it.

I also made a total unnecessary purchase, inspired by the UnFancy blog, and bought the linen paris tee Caroline has. It suits me perfectly. Plus it was on clearance so it wasn't TOO big a splurge. I don't think it'll get a place in my fall capsule, but I'll enjoy it for the next month or so and happily bring it back in the spring. I will surely be excited about it then!

I am following your process with great interest, and already, I am in awe of your ability to be ruthless with your purging. That is a skill I am slooooowly making progress in!

More and more, I am understanding the importance of keeping around lesser worn, but very comfortable shoes. It seems like my feet change from day to day of late, and I have found myself wearing shoes in a wider range of sizes than I used to. I would advise hanging onto those black Toms if you like them and they fit you well.

Wow - you are on a roll! I like the idea of separating out your wardrobe into 2 seasonal capsules - instead of 1 year-long capsule. I also live in So CAL - but at the beach (so it doesn't get as hot in the summer or as cold in the winter compared to the desert) - but there are definite temp changes with each season - but not enough to really put any clothes away - it just never seems like my clothes are "out of season" - KWIM? I just layer during the colder months - sounds like you do too.

I think that if I were you I'd eliminate all clothing items that were NOT a good color for you and/or those that are pilled, stretched out, ripped, etc. Did you buy all of those camis and tees this summer? - because I'm thinking that if they are more than just a few months old that at least some of them aren't going to be in very good shape anymore! If that's the case, I'd purge them.

I'd also (like others have suggested) start tracking what you wear each day and at the end of the day rate the outfit based on you "Happiness Factor." How happy were you with the outfit? Was it something that you were able to put on and then not have to think about all day? Or, were you constantly having to adjust (pull down, pull up, tuck in, etc.) to make it work? Rate it on a scale of 1 (being very unhappy) and 10 (extremely happy) - and after 30 days or so you can look at that and determine what items are not bringing any joy into your life - and then banish them from your wardrobe! Woo-Hoo!

Do you wear your camis on their own? I don't, so I don't even count them in my wardrobe numbers any more than I do my panties. I also keep them in a drawer. I also stack my hangers (hook them vertically) so I can fit more in my closet. Girl math + girl physics!

But if you haven't shopped for awhile, is all your stuff in good physical shape? Nothing stretched out or faded? If you want to reduce numbers, that's the first place to look in addition to stuff that doesn't fit quite right.

I'm also wondering if the wardrobe you have reflects the life you lead? I've eliminated nearly all the fantasy life pieces from my wardrobe so I have exactly one cocktail/evening wedding/graduation dress because I don't go to those things more than once a year at best. I have a lot of things I could wear to a funeral/memorial service because I go to quite a few more of those. :(

Thanks for the link Gaylene, I hadn't seen that one yet!

Kiwi - darn budgets, huh! I bought my tall boots last year, and they were quite cheap (I think they were from Target), but they held up last year and are still in great condition.

I find that I keep the quality splurging to a minimum with my shoes. I stay middle of road with quality and price.

I always end up splurging on tops.

This time next year though, I imagine I will be better at this.

Wow you are making lots of progress!!
I have only just read this thread but can see you have really thought about your wardrobe.
With shoes I think your current 12 pairs is fine for the year, however if there are some that are not worn or joyful or tired then pass them on.

My shoe wardrobe is a similar size - I have a couple of pairs that are rarely worn (mostly evening shoes) but the rest are regulars.

I have budget constraints too - while I would love new tall boots it is a $200 plus item here (usually more like $350) which is more than I want to spend at the moment. So I am making do until next winter when I will reassess. My current ones are worn and a little beaten up, have been reheeled once already.

Phoe, I'm wondering if you've read The Wardrobe Architect series that someone (sorry, can't remember who) suggested in a Link Love a few months back? http://www.coletterie.com/wardrobe-architect

Thoughts on the "Shoe Capsule"

I own 12 pairs of shoes, not counting my one pair of work shoes, and my one pair of gym shoes.

2 boots, 2 sandals, 2 ballet flats, 3 sneakers, 3 heels.

I am considering removing one sneaker pair and one heel pair, then I will have just 2 of every style of shoe.

Right now, the only change up from season to season is swapping the 2 sandals for the 2 boots. Everything else remains the same.

The sneaker pair I'm considering removing are my Black Toms. Comfy, but they haven't been worn much lately.

Heels would be my black ankle booties, which are a cute change up from the black pumps, but I have not worn those booties since 2011!

Alright, I did away with 12 items.

Donated some items, and stored a few items that I like, but didn't wear much this summer. They will get one last chance when summer rolls back around next year.

Attempted splitting my wardrobe into Spring/Summer, and Fall/Winter capsules.

The S/S capsule was EASY. I picked 30 items of clothing, 10 pairs of shoes. Don't have enough accessories to bother with counting them in my capsule.

F/W however, was difficult, and is STILL giving me trouble.

Anyone else find that because of layering, their fall/winter capsules have more clothing items than their spring/summer capsules?

Most of my S/S items can roll right over into F/W. Tanks and Tees are now layered under the sweaters and coats.

In order to make room for sweaters, coats, and long blouses, I will have to store quite a few of my tanks and tees, and ONLY keep the most essential neutral ones. Will also have to be picky with bottoms, and will not include a skirt, perhaps one dress, the sequined one (in the rare case I attend a New Years party).

Problem is, I already have my eye on 3 more items! Grey skinny jeans, and dark indigo skinny jeans. I suppose I could do away altogether with my light wash skinnys I already have, but I did have a few plans for those. Hmm.

The 3rd item I've been eyeing is the Dark Rinse Keeper Chambray from J Crew. I have the light version, and the dark rinse just looks so lovely. I already have a really nice outfit in my head, of the dark rinse chambray, dark rinse skinny's, and boots.

Definitely some more decisions to make, but thought I'd share my progress in slimming down and finally creating separate capsules.

On another note - Because I now need to store my separate capsules during off seasons, this prompted me to completely purge my under the bed containers (I have 2, both were full!) so that now, all the stuff from those 2 now fits into one, and the spare one can now be used for storing my off season capsule! Score!

Thanks Alana, I think I might do that with my sweaterdress.

Every time I try it on, I think "Well this looks nice, why don't I wear it?"

And I likely don't wear it because I don't know how to style it.

The goal of paring down a wardrobe--indeed the goal of any minimalistic endeavor is never to get rid of stuff for the sake of getting rid of stuff. Get rid of things that no loner bring you joy. Get rid of the things which are piling. Get rid of things until you no longer feel overwhelmed. Then stop. :)

Figure out why you aren't wearing those flattering pieces--don't be afraid to post yourself wearing them here and get some ideas about how to style them...

Ann - At first I was against the idea of storing clothes in a box, mostly because then I have to find a place to put a box! haha.

I do have a spare bedroom with an empty closet, and now that I think of it... I think I have 3 or 4 items in there right now! That closet mostly holds things like my prom dress, my mom's wedding dress, surfing wetsuits, and snowboarding gear. I'm thinking I might take 5 or 6 of my current items and put them in that closet. I NEVER open that closet so I won't be accidentally seeing them or anything.

Or maybe I really oughta just put my "maybe" items in a box, tape it up, and then if I miss nothing, just take that box straight to the donation shop without even opening it. Probably best to not go through and look at the items.

I think I'm set for the "unavoidable adult eventwear" (I like that!). My LBD, black trousers and black blazer can probably cover any "formal" event. At least, I think they can!

em - I definitely am wondering if choosing a year long capsule is my issue, and am considering breaking it down into spring/summer and fall/winter.

My loungewear (sweats, yoga pants, random comfy t shirts that I love to laze around or sleep in but are too ratty for public) is all in one drawer of my dresser, and kind of is it's own standalone capsule. I don't allow it any space in my closet, don't allow it much room at all, maybe 4 tops and 4 bottoms, and will ruthlessly toss an item if it's gotten too worn out. I like to keep it out of sight so I don't think about it at all.

Because the camis and tees are absolute essentials and get worn everyday, they kind of ARE the capsule, on their own! I only have a handful of items that aren't those basics. I suppose, because they get hanger space, they get considered as part of my capsule. Same with the high school hoodie. It gets a hanger too.

I wore that thing almost daily for YEARS. Now, it's mostly a lounge around thing in the winter, or is my camping go-to for sitting by the campfire. I remember throughout the summertime through HS that hoodie would have a campfire smell to it from nigh after night after night of wearing it by a campfire. I loved that smell.

Even now, sitting in my room, just looking at that hoodie hanging in my closet makes me smell a campfire :)

I think my goal for the next few days may be to turn my current wardrobe into 2 separate capsules and figure out if I have any holes, and perhaps do away with items that don't really go into either capsule.

I get you on wanting <50 high quality garments. Being pretty new myself, the first few months, I bought a few new basics and took a while to figure out my new direction. It's changed over this my second summer on YLB, much more focus. So unless there is a need to rush, why?

Why don't you do a 333 before you purge any more? Just box up the stuff that isn't in rotation and see what you miss. It's only three months and the experience will likely reveal a lot. There might be some outfit "glue" you need in a box, or you might decide that you don't miss any of it.

And make sure your capsules include the "unavoidable adult eventwear" (I just made that up), something suitable for:

-a wedding
-a funeral
-a job interview
-a benefit party that someone drops tickets into your lap at the last minute.

Even if unlikely in the next 3 months, most of these things can come without time to shop (you get invited as a date to a wedding...a recruiter calls you for the job of your dreams, etc.) so it's good to have it prepped in advance.

A second vote for the Vivienne files for ideas about using a limited palette to keep a manageable sized wardrobe.

I consider tanks, tees, and camis more like underwear. They are, to me, basics and really don't count.

I think you may be overwhelmed because you are looking at your whole wardrobe as one 12-month capsule. But most yearly wardrobes contain several capsules--a summer capsule, fall work capsule, etc. Perhaps you could break down your wardrobe as something for the upcoming fall and winter. You could at least adjust the colors to be less summery. Even though your company provides you with a uniform, things you wear after work could be called your "loungewear wardrobe," which is vastly different from your "weekend wardrobe."

Also, things like your HS hoodie aren't really part of capsule wardrobes, unless you truly wear it often. At a certain age, HS hoodies become more like memorabilia and things to wear when one needs comfort clothing.

Style Fan - I graduated college 3 years ago and didn't buy any clothes since then, until this summer. My wardrobe was definitely in need of help! Things either were totally not appropriate for me at 25, or things were in horrible condition. I'd gotten into a bad habit of shopping at random nameless brandless shops that sold very poor quality items but hey, when you're a college kid that $3 shirt will do just fine, and i just dealt with it when it starts falling apart in the washer and dryer after one spin!

Now, I'm browsing more quality stores and wait until I see a sale. Not only am I saving money, but if I say "wait for a sale" and put an item on my wishlist, perhaps by the time it does go on sale, I won't even want it so much anymore. Nothing like not buying ANYTHING to save money, hehe.

Suz - I'm sort of wondering if I'm harming myself by trying to create a year long capsule. I'm thinking maybe I can create 2 capsules. A spring/summer capsule and a fall/winter capsule, and then sort of let my coats be their own capsule. There will surely be a lot of overlap between the two capsules, and just because they're separate capsules doesn't mean I can't keep both in my closet. But I think by mentally creating those seasonal capsules, I'll have more focus. That blog looks quite awesome, by the way

Weather here is always on the warmer side. April-September is 90 degrees and up, October-March is between 40-60 degrees most days. It snows once a year, sometimes not at all. Rains maybe 10 days a year. I don't think I have never seen the temperature drop below about 20 degrees in all the 25 years I've lived here.

My trench coat probably won't get much use, but it's a classic item, and will likely be with me for the rest of my life, so I don't mind that it isn't the most necessary around here.

I am going through my wardrobe and reviewing my clothes. I have not bought much in the last 3 years since I retired. I found the unfancy blog helpful as well as some others. I like Vivienne Files as well.

I like the idea that Suz has from unfancy of 3 tops, 3 bottoms, etc. It helps a lot with organizing clothing and creating capsules. I realized I don't need that many clothes.

Here's her instructions for building a capsule. Keep in mind she's doing a seasonal capsule for a couple of months. Considering yours is for a year, I think 60 items is still quite minimal. But then again, I live in a full four season climate, or maybe more like 6 or 8 seasons: (Cool spring, warm spring, cool summer, stinkin' hot summer, warm fall, cold fall, mild winter, freeze your butt off winter.)

Suz - I didn't even realize how many tanks/camis I had until I wrote them all down and thought oh geez. 12 camis. I have 5 pairs of pants but 12 camis! Haha. But they all get used. There are 2 or 3 I could do away with and feel fine about though. Like you said, I spend most of my hours in a work uniform so the downtime is more limited. The striped camis are both from high school and are looking a bit pilled from years of wear, so even though I'm a bit attached and have loved them well, I can probably do away with one of them, at least.

On the laundry note, however, a part of me also wants to minimize the white items in my wardrobe, because I dislike having to do a separate load of laundry just for the white items. Especially when I have, what... maybe 5 white items total??

It almost sounds insane though. A wardrobe without a plain white tee?!

I like the idea of 3 varieties of fancy. In some aspects my wardrobe already has a few patterns that go that route so continuing in that direction could definitely be helpful

At first I thought, "Wow, that is a lot of tanks and tees..." but then I realized...I live in Canada. You live in the desert! And I am twice as old as you (and then some) so tanks feel too casual even for casual wear for me, most of the time. Whereas for someone your age, it sounds just right.

And I'm telling you, if I lived in your climate, I'd need at LEAST 12 of them to prevent laundry bottlenecks. I'd be changing them a couple of times a day!

Then again...I don't have air conditioning where I live (and yes, it does get hot for two months a year). Meanwhile, you work in a uniform so wear these only in your off hours.

This is all a convoluted way of saying that everyone's circumstances differ so significantly that it can be really tough to advise. I think your best bet is to take photos of your outfits and track your happiness factor as well as what you wear. What do you love wearing? What feels just "meh." What do you feel is missing? What is too much?

If you want to continue to cut down, you might consider unfancy's method of picking three items of a particular type -- one plain, one in-between, and one fancy. So, let's say you have 3 white tops in your capsule. One plain, one in-between, one fancy.

Abc - I suppose, simply put, I still feel like I have too many clothes. I have a very large closet so space was never an issue. 60 was the first goal simply because that's how many hangers came in the boxed set, and figured it was a good goal considering I started out with almost 200 items at the beginning of summer.

Jen - definitely going to pay attention to what I do or don't wear, or what I do or don't feel good in. The only hole in that, is that I chose not to create a seasonal capsule, but a year long capsule. I just am not fond of the idea of putting away clothes for the season and bringing them back out later. Because of this, there are items (like my sweaters) that will be sitting unworn until probably October. I know I definitely have too many long sleeves and button downs, but I won't really know what is or isn't getting use for many more months to come.

Right now though, I can probably focus in on the very large number of Camis/Tanks. Living in the desert, light tops are always necessary (when temps reach 110 even a tee shirt is too much) - but I do not need 12 of them. Not even. Haha

Although, I'm currently very close to nixing the purple sweaterdress (I've had it for a few years and have NEVER worn it, even though it looks nice on me), and the brown and white sweater since it doesn't really match well with my color scheme.

You have the beginnings of a tracking system here. Maybe take your list and see what you wear and what you feel fab in for the end of summer through winter. That may give you enough data to go on to see what is working for you and what is superfluous.

Why do you need to reduce? Because you set 60 as your arbitrary number? Closet space? Just wondering what is behind the push to further pare down the wardrobe. I would personally take this for a test run over a couple of months and see what is not needed and what wardrobe holes you have and go from there.

*EDIT* - This thread is always a work in progress. I edit the body of this first post as I edit my wardrobe. As I add or delete clothing items from my life, I add or delete them here. I started out with a little more than 60 items, and have since downsized to the current number posted. I am continuing to downsize.

Hi folks, I'm new here making my first post.

A few months ago, I realized that my closet was full of ratty clothes from high school, that I had no business trying to wear anymore (I'm 25).

While on the search for tips on how to create a more age appropriate wardrobe for myself, I happened upon Project 333 and became VERY obsessed with the idea of capsule wardrobes.

Over the past few months I've tossed or donated probably about 100 articles of clothing, and purchased many staple pieces in better quality than anything I've ever owned before.

I purchased a set of 60 velvet hangers and told myself I could not own more clothes than what would fit on the hangers.

My PJ's and loungewear get one drawer in my dresser, I don't have many shoes so I never counted them in my capsule, and I don't own many accessories so I never counted them either.

My capsule is simply clothing.

I'd like to reduce even further from my 60 hangers, maybe 50 or even 40!! But I struggle to figure out where to start. Especially when I keep feeling like I'm probably missing some key items as it is.

I live in Southern California so it's regularly warm or downright hot, and winters don't last long and temps don't commonly go below freezing. I also work at a job that requires a uniform, so no fussing about what to wear to work. Black pants and the company provided shirt.

Here's my wardrobe!

1. Sapphire Cami
28. Black cardigan
29. Tan cable knit cardigan.

30. Black chino shorts.
31. Mint green chino shorts (STORED)
32. Light denim Bermudas (STORED)
35. Light wash skinnys
36. White skinnys (STORED)
37. Black skinnys

39. Grey halter maxi dress (STORED)
48. Red Pea Coat
49. Beige Trench
50. Black blazer

I NEED to pare down more from the above clothing items.

I have "winter" coloring (light rosy skin, dark hair), so I tend to stick with blues. Sapphire is my favorite. Ruby Reds and Emerald Greens look nice on me too, but the ruby reds and sapphires don't go so well together unless I want to look particularly patriotic.

I am trying to keep red to a minimum, and mostly stick with blues and greens as my colors, and black/grey/white as my neutrals.

My accessories are minimal. I have a watch I like to wear, and 3 small understated necklaces that I interchange. I wear a variety of earrings but none of them are dangly or flashy. I own one black belt that never gets worn, and 3 scarves that never get any use. I have one purse. Accessories just aren't my thing.

Shoes are basic for me.

3 heels (black pumps, black booties, nude pumps)
2 sandals (black and gold)
3 sneakers (mint vans, black converse, black toms)
2 flats (black and mint)
2 boots (brown knee, brown ankle)

Suggestions?? What should I consider giving up?

Thank you!!
