Maybe if we saw more older women's bodies...and bare legs and arms when needed...it wouldn't be such a cultural taboo? Let's show em what we got!

At the moment, I feel pretty ok about the body changes. Grateful to have a body! But it's also nice to see someone I can identify with at times. Recently I saw a photo of the lovely Jane Birkin, now 68, wearing a sleeveless black dress and her upper arms sagged a bit and you know, somehow it made me feel just a bit more accepting of mine...which I also don't hide.

For changing bodies, there are of course, baggy or wrap dresses. I don't wear dresses to speak of these days, but recently I'm wearing some Japanese fisherman pants I like, which wrap and tie.

You know, it's all why there's a whole special word for young people, indicative of their embarrassing lack of experience, sophistication, sense of proportion, etc.: Callow. It's why society doesn't like 12-24 year olds. Why there are special curfews for them and everything. I'm just saying - I recall the appallingly idiotic conclusions I drew as a teenager, hehe.

Anyways, I do like being covered up in the sun. Being fried alive is for petulant children; it's how they learn. I got a nice little light linen jacket from Nordies while NAS was going on. Adds a bit of polish as well as sunburn protection.

I'm having exactly the same issues about my arms. Generally, I prefer to cover up - three-quarter sleeves are my favourite - but I think there are always options out there. Having said that, I have no problem with baring my arms during very hot weather. They are not perfect, but then neither is any other part of my body: I just aim to make everything look as presentable as possible.
As for thoughtless remarks from younger people, well, they are simply in that blissfully ignorant stage of life where they imagine that they will always be young - didn't we all? They will find out the truth soon enough!

Shevia and Lisa, I completely agree with you about short sleeves (I think of them as "gym blouse" sleeves, as I was traumatized by the required gym wear in high school) being worse than no sleeves. Almost Trying specified "sleeves to the elbow" and that's my preference, too. They must also be narrow, and--for me, anyway--cut with a small, high armhole to be most flattering.

I am in my early sixties. After almost five years of staying away from shorts and sleeveless tops, I've been wearing both this summer-- and enjoying them in the heat. I think I'm in the process of accepting my changed, and changing, body. And appreciating it. After all, I can walk for miles, garden, clean my own house, and do just about anything I could do when I was younger. Now, my goal for August is to get out my swimsuits and go swimming!

I'm turning 50 today, so pardon if this hits a nerve...but to hell with those girls talking that way about an older woman's body. My upper arms (and my upper legs for that matter) are nothing to brag about but I'll be darned if I'm going to cover up because of what some young twits say. I'm comfortable in sleeveless in the summer, so that's what I'll wear. Please don't let inconsiderate people drive your fashion choices.

Many good points here. I agree with JAileen. I sometimes wear sleeveless tops because it's so hot. But I really don't own that many because of my proportions. They almost all show my bra from the side, which is more vulgar than the condition of my arms.

I think that not wearing tight clothing is more important than sleeves or not. A tight knit top with sleeves looks more wrong on an older woman than a loose or tailored fit sleeveless blouse.

The main reason I never wear sleeveless tops/dresses is because I am ALWAYS cold because everywhere is over air-conditioned. I wear bracelet length sleeves and usually some sort of topper.

Jumping in with just a practical tip for those that *want* more coverage for whatever reason (mine is often sun protection) --

stylist Kendall Farr reminds people they can always go shorter if they find a top they like -- so if you find or have a long-sleeve T or top you're ok with converting, DIY or get an alterations person to trim the sleeves down to whatever length you prefer. Ditto for converting pants.

And from what I hear most bridal/special occasion shops are pretty experienced with adding aftermarket chiffon or lace sleeves to fancier dresses.

On the sportier side companies that sell SPF clothing tend to have longer-sleeved options.

Its so sad that a silly joke between two young women made such a dramatic impact on you. I can understand if you feel conscious about your arms as a result, but I honestly think that you should try to overcome it. Young women can be such idiots! Style is evergreen.....women of all ages can be extremely stylish and appropriately dressed, and yes, practically dressed too.

I would say --- to hell with them!! Go ahead and wear sleeveless tops on really hot days. Sometimes, it's all in your head!

But I do understand your need to want more sleeved options in your wardrobe. I do too, simply because I find them more flattering. I have noticed that American brands offer way too too many sleeveless tops and tank style tops! European brands could be the right choice, as you go get lots and lots of sleeved options too.

For example, I just saw these tops and thought you'd feel more comfortable in them

How sad to hear of young women being unkind about older women's bodies. One day they will be in the same boat and I hope that they regret their horrible attitude.

I've noticed that my arms are different from when I was younger even though I exercise and lift weights. I'm not at the stage of wanting to cover them though...perhaps I will one day.

Shevia, I agree that sometimes short sleeves can be less flattering than sleeveless. I tend to go for sleeveless that is cut in a little at the shoulders. Somehow it works best for me. I also like the 'cold-shoulder' look and dresses/tops with soft floaty accents that move around my arms.

My mother, who is 87, will wear no shorter than elbow length because of her arms. She has very limited choice in what she can buy and she often laments the fact. It gets quite uncomfortable for her in summer.

I am excited about rash guards because my very fair skin and my sensitivity to sunscreen chemicals mean beaches aren't my favorite setting.

My mother was very self-conscious about her varicose veins when she was in her 30s - I remember she almost never wore shorts, or if she did, they were knee length, though she had a lovely figure. She's become less concerned with age, because there are relaxed expectations of how her legs 'should' look now that she's older. As a kid of course I thought she was worrying too much about it, but I do understand why she wanted to cover her legs.

(Odd... I always assumed I'd have the same vein problems, but only just now in writing this did I realize that I'm older now than she was then, so I guess I avoided that particular situation.)

I have to agree with shevia's comment about short sleeved tops being less flattering than sleeveless. Look, unless one has serious weight issues, for whatever reason, our arms ARE FINE. No, the skin is not as taut as it once was, but I don't get that particular phobia either. Keep them toned with light weights or yoga, keep them exfoliated and moisturized , and they will serve you well in whatever sleeveless top you want. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it

This is a very relevant topic for me. I work with a woman who is in her mid-70s and she just mentioned she no longer wears sleeveless. I was told something similar by another woman who is at least 60 based on things she has said. Both women are in good shape and I don't see how their short sleeves are more flattering than sleeveless tops - I actually find many short sleeves tend to be unflattering on some arms.

I have given up a lot of my younger self-consciousness about swimsuits. My kids are so happy when I go swimming with them, that trumps the rest. I prefer boy shorts for comfort and plan on ordering a rash guard for sun protection. And then I just try not to think about it too much.

I wear sleeveless tops most summer days because I like the ventilation. Would my 20 year old self approve of my nearly 50 year old arms? Probably not. But I expect my 70 year old self would think I was a fool for not wearing sleeveless tops in the hot summer.

I am in my 40s and have never been comfortable in a swimsuit. I now wear a rash guard top with sleeves to my elbows, a high neck and full midriff and back coverage. For bottoms I wear mid thigh board shorts (made for women). You can get them knee length also. Underneath my top I wear an aquatic bra (they make them for women water polo players) that gives me full support. I have never felt more comfortable in the water. Gives me excellent sun protection also. And I also think it looks fine - the board shorts have a fun tropical print on them. More and more people are wearing this sort of thing. So I would really encourage you to give it a whirl if you feel the need to cover up.
As for what those women said - try to ignore it. There is a word for that kind of talk that I will not use here.

I have come to accept my changed rectangle body. Shift dresses are now my friend. I never wore them when I was younger because I had a waist and enjoyed accenting it. Now I wear tunics and long shirts untucked and like what I see in the mirror. Anthropologie has a good selection of shift dresses with sleeves.

In some ways, I'm happier with my body now than when I was younger. I'm at the lowest weight I've been in forty years, (due to some health issues) and I no longer have to struggle to keep at that weight. I'm in tune with how much I need to eat to be satisfied and I like that. ( I was never fat or heavy but thought I was.) I don't do bare legs because of veins, but I'll do sleeveless, although I prefer some sort of sleeve. At 65 years old, I don't feel like I have to be perfectly toned. I usually wear pants, and I find that structured, tailored pieces are the most flattering for me. A few years ago, when pants all seemed to have a lower rise than I was used to, I panicked, but tried some, liked them, and also liked how they looked more modern. Same with shorter more fitted jackets. I'm a classic dresser but the sillhouettes change and that's how you stay current.

Regarding the young women ridiculing older women's arms: I can only hope that Karma makes sure they have arms that they feel they must cover up when they are older. For the rest of us, let's enjoy sleeveless tops when it's hot. I'm in my late 50s and I wear sleeveless tops and shorts all summer, because it's often 100F or above here.

I bought new swimsuit pieces last fall for a trip to Hawaii. I bought a tankini top, boy shorts bottoms, a rash guard and a cotton coverup shift-like garment. I forgot to pack the coverup, but the other pieces worked brilliantly for me. All of the pieces were from Lands End. I played in the surf, I snorkeled, and I walked around the condo complex without feeling bad at all. If I had to do it over, I would have bought the same items, but I would have packed the coverup.

I don't have any dress suggestions, sorry.

Usually short sleeves are enough in summer. 3/4 and bracelet are my faves not just for arm coverage, but they work with my proportions.
I hunt down thin but opaque linen knits for summer, opaque so I don't have to wear a cami, and then the linen knit can be fairly cool even with sleeves.

For dressy, sleeves are really a must due to A/C or winter--but, I've been pondering at what point, for really hot weather events (in public, as opposed to at home), I would just be able to "let it go" regarding upper arm wingage, and think maybe I need to really think about what I consider important and why.

Funny, because it's not going to get any better, barring my taking up a really intense Jane Fonda program or something ( I alway PLAN to do more exercise, so in theory I could get them in somewhat better shape, but, realistically....). So it does make you wonder, do I really want to wait until I'm 80 to go more bare?!

I think it depends on your personal comfort with your body. I have not worn a swim outfit since 1986. I never wear sleeveless dresses or tops. I do not wear shorts much in public. I am a solid size 12, a runner who does 1/2 marathons. I'm 60 years old. I do not and have never worn sunscreen or actually even makeup. I dress to please myself. I am not comfortable in a swimming outfit and will never be. So I don't wear one, never swim. I never feel deprived by this decision.

I think the people you should be dressing for, in addition to yourself, are the ones who know and love you. Trying to look attractive isn't just about vanity, it's part of what you're contributing when you're with other people.
Maybe you could adjust how you're describing yourself with your clothes?
I used to wear cut-offs all summer and my husband thought that was so cute. I don't really wear shorts at all anymore and at first, when he was after me to wear them, I thought he was hoping I would look the way I used to. But he really just thought I looked too hot in capris and that I'd be more comfortable, and more fun to be with, in shorts.
Maybe your life is about something different now than it was before?

This something my friends and I lament now and then - the lack of interesting clothes for women our age who no longer have the bodies they think they do (I'm like everyone else here who says they keep buying for the body they remember having, forgetting things have changed - ACK!) I'm the eternal optimist though, and am still hoping I can rid myself of the weight I've put on . It feels like giving up in way, to start buying clothes I don't really like. I work out quite a bit - do yoga and or barre every day - walk and bike too - because I want to keep my arms and legs looking as they always have. My midsection refuses to cooperate thought, despite all of this yoga and barre, and that's where I'm stuck now. I have not been in a swimsuit in over a year now, and am totally dreading a pool party I've been invited to this weekend. I am not buying a new swimsuit at this point in the summer. Still the eternal optimist hoping to turn things around for next summer:) The changed body makes me feel old and frumpy - and that's where I get a bit resentful. Is it acceptance that I must make with myself ?

I agree- it isn't just older ladies who want coverage. My dress code for work (that often includes cocktail events) requires at least knee-length and sleeves and for a long period I dated a man who was a member of a religious community that required sleeves and knee-length pieces when I attended events with him.

I personally really love the abundance of tee-shirt and elbow-type sleeves on garments over just sleeveless and cap sleeves.

Elly you just found some really nice dresses, I have an event coming up and want arm coverage. I am late 30s and have decided I don't want to bare my upper arms either, so always trying, you're definitely not alone, though I throw caution to the wind - no flabby arms, thighs or chubby tummy will stop me from enjoying the pool or ocean.

It hardly matters why one's body has changed--age, childbirth, weight gain or loss, health problems--the important thing is to dress for those changes. That can be very difficult when designers continue to design only sleeveless dresses, or top out their sizing at size 10. It seems like yesterday that I had a tiny waist and ribcage, long skinny arms, and broader hips: the classic pear shape. Now I'm more of a rectangle, mushy around the middle, with arms that look strangely (to my eye) meaty. It's disconcerting, and I've made mistakes by shopping with that old pear shape in mind. What can you do but keep plugging away and reminding yourself of what looks good NOW? I, too, prefer to cover my upper arms most of the time, as I find them distracting. I look and look, and when I find lightweight natural-fiber tops with elbow-length sleeves, I jump. (J. Crew & the Gap usually have several.) Recently I found a beautiful white cotton shift dress with lacy scalloped hem & sleeves at Ann Taylor. When I wore it to a Summer dinner party, every woman there asked where I'd found a Summer dress with sleeves! I don't know why designers and manufacturers refuse to pay attention to what so many of their customers want, but I continue to hunt for the things that do work. Good luck!

I think there are a lot of great options out there for the type of occasions you are talking about-- today there are so many great tops that work with full or pencil skirts, which are a great two-piece dress option. There is also buying a sleeveless dress and then something to put over it, like the topper in the link below.

http://https//www.etsy.com/lis.....gallery_14

Rash guards and board shorts are great in the pool (and can go over a bikini to avoid too many layers) and protect from the sun.

I posted here about shopping with my mother (who's 70) a couple of weeks ago, and it was really eye opening how much trouble we had finding stuff that suited her and fit. She's still in quite decent shape and very active, but her body is definitely different than it was even 5 years ago (she also had a mastectomy last year so there's that angle of things).

I agree with Suz that you shouldn't cover up your arms just for other people, but for sure I get where you're coming from. My mom now prefers to wear sleeves, no shorts, and midi skirts when she's leaving the house, although she still wears tank tops and shorts at home for practical tasks.

I look forward to seeing what people suggest. I sometimes think European brands do better at 'covered but lightweight' than NA brands do, maybe because a/c is less common? I'm sized out of Massimo Dutti myself, but somewhere like that might be a good place to start.

You've brought up a topic I've been thinking about the last couple of weeks: the necessity of accepting my changed body shape and getting rid of that inner image of me even 20 years ago when I consider certain styles while shopping.

Shopping online makes it harder. I see a dress I might have worn ages ago, and can only imagine it on that person I was, not the shape I am now. And with three weddings coming up, it is something I have to figure out now.

My thinking hasn't quite jelled on this topic, so I will be interested to read what others have to say.
