My husband wears suits every day (and get to see him because I work in the same office - pretty hot!)... he would wear a Jerry Garcia tie with a suit like this.

Take the suit with you to Nordies. Try on a few shirts and make sure they fit - white and colours. Match it with a festive tie because it's a Summer wedding. Match it to what you are wearing too of you like that idea.

Greg has a gorgeous slim fitting navy pinstripe suit that he matches with a dark blue jacquard shirt and blue/black/light blue polka dot tie. He likes that monotone dark look.

Thanks all.

Krista, appreciate the specific suggestions. Love the idea of tying together with what I am wearing but I don't have my dress picked out yet (6 days away !).

Angie, he is telling me he needs a shirt too so we will head off to N'strom to look for both, and certainly use their advice. If my husband is willing, we may try the non-white shirt inspired by Krista's post. I just wanted some guidelines so we are not totally dependent on the taste of the salesperson.

BTW, my husband looks super hot in Varvatos, if your guy needs casual duds. He looks for it on sale. He is tall and slim so maybe that line works for his body type.

Thanks all, keep the suggestions coming if you have more. Appreciate the help.

Okay, maybe it's just my husband, but he generally likes to know what I'm wearing so that he can make sure he's within my range of colors when he picks his shirt and tie to go with his suit. For example, if I'm wearing a dress with pink in it, he might choose to have a tie with a pink stripe in it just for continuity. But my husband is a banker and he's a little bit particular about his appearance, so you can take that suggestion with as big a grain of salt as you prefer! It might give you place to start, however, if you know what you are wearing.

MaryK is right though - a navy suit can go with pretty much anything. Recent color combos I've seen my husband pair with his navy suit - a gorgeous celery green shirt with a blue/green striped tie, a pink shirt with blue/pink striped tie, a light blue shirt with a blue/salmon/grey striped tie. Navy can be really crisp when paired with different colors - I don't think I've ever seen my husband wear his navy suit with a white shirt. And clearly, he doesn't wear any kind of tie other than stripes, either!

For brand recommendations, my BF is a fan of Robert Talbot Sevenfold ties and Zegna Quindici ties. Neither are cheap, but if you stalk eBay or Nordie's sales you can get them much less than retail.

The shops can be quite helpful in this. Take a peek and see what you like and then ask for a recommendation and see if you like their option any better.

I LOVE shopping for mens ties! When I was at Le Chateau last week with my husband I couldn't resist a peek even though he wears a suit about once every five years and has no need of any more ties.

Honestly? With a navy pinstripe suit he can wear almost anything. I'd suggest just going to the store and seeing what you like.

I can share a few pics of what my BF likes, but it's hard to say what your guy might like. Oh - can't put pics here anyway.

Gals, I have no idea how to match a shirt and tie to a suit for my husband. We are going to a summer wedding. He has a navy pinstripe part cotton suit which looks something like the photo. Any general principles, reading material, rules to live by? Thanks!
