This post has inspired me to do some searching. My dry cleaner is sweet, but I always feel nervous when I leave anything besides a simple hem for tailoring.

I found one place near work that got multiple excellent reviews -- including the all-important "reasonably priced" -- and am excited to try them out. In addition to alterations, they'll do things as complex as a custom-made wedding gowns, so I'm guessing they know what they're doing.

I'll have to do some before and after photos so you can help me judge.

Thanks everybody! I like the idea of asking who a store uses, I may ask my local Nordie's who they use next time I stop in. I'm also going to look at yelp as suggested and see if there are any suggestions in my area. Lastly, I'll try a couple other dry cleaners and see if I like their work. I saw one with a wedding dress in a window, so they may do more alterations on a daily basis beyond just a hem.

I also know a wonderful tailor at a dry-cleaners. It is in a town in the boonies, where a specialist probably could not make enough money. You might ask around in local boutiques for a tailor recommendations. If they are into clothes, they probably have some local experience.

I found the tailor I use by asking the up-market chain stores at the local shopping centre (eg. Cue, Veronika Maine, Jag) where they send clothes to have their alterations done. They all used the same one, and I find them to be excellent.

Some good advice here!!

I too have had bad experiences. My current tailor if wonderful, however the first time I went to her I said " I am a little picky about my hems, are you comfortable with that"

She gave me the million dollar response. With a smile she said "I will gladly re- do anything until you are happy" I have never taken anything back:)

good luck:)

Lisa, I actually found my current tailor (who has been terrific) on Yelp, and he happens to own a dry cleaning business, but used to be a tailor in Hong Kong. I just want to say, please don't rule someone out just because s/he happens to have a dry cleaning business. Sometimes, depending on the needs of the community, s/he might need to do both to make a decent living.

But with that said, I've also had the bad experience of entrusting a garment to a dry cleaner who did alterations on the side to bring in extra income, but who was not skilled and did a terrible job. I think the bottom line is, ask around--ask your friends, neighbors, colleagues, even local strangers who seem to be well-attired--try the tailors who get 5-star reviews on Yelp, and as Mellllls suggested, entrust only one garment at a time until you feel you've found The One.

Last of all, I've found through experience that, Surprise! Tailors are human too. They're not magicians and aren't going to be able to succeed 100 percent of the time in transforming a garment the way you envision. I've found that it's important to communicate well about what I have in mind, ask about the cost up front before deciding whether to leave the garment for the work agreed upon, and most importantly, to take the time to try the item on when I pick it up to ensure that it fits properly and to ask for changes if it doesn't. I've found that a good tailor wants you to be happy to ensure that you'll continue bringing him or her your business and hopefully recommend that your friends do too!

Hope none of this sounds too pompous, Lisa--it comes from several years of good and bad experiences!

It depends entirely on what you need to have done.

Hems - the cleaners are fine.

Waistband adjustment - feel your way through to an average tailor.

Anything finicky and you need to find a great tailor.

i echo what NK said. or, just bring one piece at a time to a tailor to try him or her out. i think tailoring is one of those things where you pay for what you get so i wouldn't go for the cheapest one you can find.

I'm not a ton of help since I'm still trying to find a tailor myself, but I found reviews on yelp.com.

I'm guessing the best way to find a tailor is to find someone who has a tailor they already love and try theirs, I just haven't done that yet.

Hi,

I've noticed the perfect fit is a big key (if not the key) to any outfit. For those of us that can't even sew a button, how did you find your tailor? I've tried the local dry cleaners, but hemming pants is the most I've been able to trust. And even then it's been hit or miss if they hem to the length agreed upon during pinning. (every now and then pants come back shorter for some reason)

Thanks for your help!
