I think many of the styles are as you describe and just squish everything in. I bought a cami that is supposed to smooth midriff bulges but was very disappointed because it also minimized the bust and I don't need that!

I think these work with a firmer band under the "cheeks" that holds them up a bit. I pull them up into this part like I would my breasts into my bra (if that makes sense). The middles of the back panel are looser to accomodate them without squishing. The result is not the buns of my 20's, but it is an improvement.

A couple of nights ago I watched the Trinny & Sussanah show on "bums". They got different shaped women in a very unforgiving wrap dress and showed their before and after picks with these kind of knickers. The difference was pretty incredible actually!

Yes Shana, that same squashed feeling was my complaint with the Spanx. Having the molded back is what they needed I thought.

I have a pair of Assets shapers that I bought to wear under a tight dress a few years ago. Mine were the ones that went all the way up to the bra line - I bought it mostly to control the baby belly jiggle but I felt more like a stuffed sausage than anything. These must have been an older design though because they just compressed and flattened my butt just like regular control top panty house. I would be curious how these newer ones work to lift the butt - after my second child, my bum is as flat as a plank and seriously sagging!!!

I'm looking forward to finding out what you think.
Spanx and others probably have something similar.

They are called Addets by Sara Blakely: SS Midthigh Shaper is the one I bought. It is also in nude. When it's hanging on the hanger you'll notice looser areas in back where your "cheeks" will be cradled, not compressed.

The tag says "Rear design lifts and firms". When I catch my reflection in a mirror (I'm wearing black Express editor pants), I feel 10 years younger. I have a serious case of tush sag that needed lifting and that gives the shape.
I'll bet the medium or large would fit you. I just don't like my shapewear too tight. These are not binding (no legband and wide waistband) and are comfortable. "Zoned compression flattens tummy" which keeps me from overeating. lol

So do they lift or give shape----I have a flat bottom but do not need it lifted---LOL

I am a size 8 so I guess I would need a XL?

For those with flat buns: These are on sale at Target this week and I understand they're designed by inventor of Spanx. I gave them a try and love that they don't compress my buns, but give them some lift and me some much needed shape back there.
For anyone interested, I wear a size 2/4 or 26/27 in pants and bought the Medium in these, and think it's the best fit. However, I don't need the thigh shaping.
I like shapewear for a still squishy waist area and no panty line.
