I think it is important to have style role models who are also professional role models, and it makes a lot of sense. Frankly, it is just smart business practice to look good!

Actually I forgot to mention the best part of her ensemble-- she was wearing a very cool, kinda funky, definitely statement necklace.. not your standard "blazer suit with small pearl necklace" (not that I am knocking pearls.. wouldn't dare do that here on ylf hehe). It was definitely not something I typically see in science so I was really impressed... To me it kinda represents the idea that it is ok to be a bada$$ in your field and also look take some time and interest in looking nice.

What an interesting perspective, Rosemerin! I don't really have any style role models but I can imagine how exciting it must be to find a woman who inspires you in these different ways. And, you can be both a professional and style role model to other women, yourself.

Well, I'm not employed yet - I'm a computer science student (currently taking a break due to some health issues). However, when I was at university, I was one of 10 girls, and there were about 250 guys. Not so inspiring What's more, almost everyone wore glasses (not the well-chosen, stylish ones, like Angie's or queenie's, but rather dull) and plaid shirts. Stereotypical as hell. Actually, the only inspiring thinngs were video games I'm serious - I still want that dress:

Oh, that is very inspiring! As a scientist I often wish there were stylish female role models a my work place, not to copy, but to inspire ( and help a little with all the boundaries and wondering what si too much and what is not).

I don't think it's silly. I can relate to the nerd/geek stereotype, being a computer & science freak myself. However, I'm probably too independent to have a role model. I can understand your point, as I have more in common with scientists and engineers; many famous celebrities are just painfully dumb.
In my opinion, fashion and style are more about creating than recreating things; I wouldn't feel comfortable it I copied someone's clothes or haircut. I love to mix and match different elements.

I am curious to know if others here share my thoughts on this, or if I am just too nutty of a geek... so this may seem silly to some of you, but I have never felt comfortable looking up to an actress as any sort of role model. I look up to professional athletes or scientists as my personal role models, because those are the types of people I draw inspiration from. However-- while some athletes tend to embrace style, I suppose I can safely say that famous scientists or engineers are not typically thought of as style icons... which is why I find myself looking to beautiful actresses/models instead... so I was thrilled to read an article this morning (with photos) of Lisa Jackson, the head administrator of the EPA (trained as a chemical engineer). First of all, she rocks professionally (in my opinion) and she is also totally stylish! In these photos (which I can't link to, unfortunately) she was wearing a killer steel gray-ish suit with mandarin collar and an awesome necklace, and she has a trendy, modern hair cut that suits her really well! Yeah!
I hope I am not offending anyone here, I just find it refreshing to have a broader range of stylish people to emulate.
