I'm in the same boat, Em. Weight hasn't budged, diet is still healthy, but suddenly there's this abdominal bulge.

Core strength and strong muscles overall are great goals to have but probably won't flatten out your abdomen.

With age, female bodies start trying to hang onto estrogen, which they do by laying down fat, particularly in the abdominal region.

Your weight may be the same, but your composition of fat to lean mass (muscle, bones, capillaries, water) has changed. All over strength training will help -- with heavy weights.

As for the arm jiggle, that may also be a factor of skin elasticity. Pinch the skin on the back of your elbow and see how long it takes to bounce back.

A great approach as we age is a combination of 1) resistance (weights, bands or body weight) to stave off bone density loss and to stay strong, (and weights are best for this... science says) 2) aerobics for fat burning and cardio vascular health, and 3) flexibility, which can be achieved with a regular stretching routine, and of course yoga. The combination is the key. We really need all three.

Agree with Danusa that spot reducing isn't possible. I love the online trainer I've mentioned here before http://www.redefiningstrength.com The trainer is Cori Lefowith. She is awesome and replies to every single question on her website, facebook, IG, etc. A lot of her clients are women "of a certain age".

Jules, it has taken almost 2 years of lifting weights and training at the gym for my arms to show muscle definition. Not huge but pretty good.

I will always agree that spot fat reduction isn't very likely, and I evangelize full body weight training for many reasons. So I don't believe you can target arm fat specifically. However, I think you can increase tone, which does help with the arm jiggle. This is pure anecdata but over the past year I have returned to the gym and started weight training. I haven't been consistent enough with gym or diet to keep body fat off, but I am definitely stronger and fitter overall. And my arms still look the same (they don't appear leaner or more muscular to my eye) and are still large, but they no longer do the 'wing' thing people talk about. They are a little wobbly but much improved in that respect.
I still don't suggest people spot train because a full body program has so many benefits, but that's a personal bias I suppose You can do a great full body workout in the same time it would take you to do a bunch of less effective arm exercises. The full body workout will have more impact on overall body fat and muscle ratios because you're working much larger muscles. You can't lose belly fat working your arms!

I'm going to put in a vote for a fast vinyasa yoga class led by a competent yogi. I've never been as toned and strong as I am now because you use your own body weight. Nothing is as healthy for your body, mind and spirit as a great yoga class. And an extra great idea if you don't like gyms.

Biggest bang for your buck if time is limited and you want to hit arms and core is swimming laps. If you have the basic skills of freestyle (crawl), breast stroke, and back stroke you can probably do 1000m (40 lengths of a 25m pool) in 30-45 min. Otherwise, weight training is the ticket for toning muscles.

Lots of wisdom here. Em, they are right. As ones ages, the body shape changes and weight settles in the mid section. There is not much you can do about it. Often things are beyond your control. Physical problems can keep you from exercising like you know you should. Medications can cause weight gain or problems like dizziness that can make exercise difficult.

I would focus on strength and flexibility. A general healthy diet- but unfortunately our bodies are programmed to store more fat in our mid section as we age. It is finding that balance between not ignoring the change and accepting the change.

Pilates focuses a lot on the abs-and also anything requiring balance (yoga balance poses, SUP, etc). Plank is good-ok its awful-but good for ab strength! Arms ditto to weight training. Tricep dips-also awful, though less awful on pool steps Barre does some arm work, and some abs-though more bum than anything.

Weight train and cardio, there is not really such a thing as being able to reduce fat in one area, but you can strengthen the muscles of one area, so if your core is weak, abdominal exercises can make it look flatter, etc.

Hate to tell you from someone who knows: it gets worse as you age. I think some body types are more prone to it. And each year it gets easier to gain weight and harder to lose it.

I've been able to tighten up in the last year with some core exercises--for me push ups from a low bench, plank and variations of plank and gave up crunches because I read they also are hard on the lower back and don't work as well. Before that I had a routine with resistance bands but I wanted better results than I was getting. A good place to start though.

There is also the quality of your life. Maybe a glass of wine and a calorific dinner out is worth it once in a while. Don't give up though.

I hate to say this, but you are better off doing whole body training rather than focus on a few muscle groups. The reason I say this is because if you train/build muscle in one muscle group you run the risk of being weak in another and may end up having problems in the long run.

But if you seriously only want to target those 2 areas, I would say push ups (incline if you cannot do regular), bicep curls, triceps dips, triceps kickbacks, dumbbell chest presses, dumbbell upright row and presses for the arms and for the belly - core exercises i.e. dead bug, planks, bird dog, etc., russian twists, crunches (I don't do sit up because they bother my lower back).

If you don't want to invest in dumbbells then think about getting resistance bands - cheaper and easier to store.

I thought belly fat had to do with hormones. As we age, that’s where the hormones we need are stored. JenniNZ explained this. Hopefully she will see this, and elaborate.

I am not sure but could use those same exercises. Stop drinking wine beer, or any alcohol. Diet soft drinks may also be involved. Cut carbohydrates.
Exercises...the plank, maybe touching toes or the floor. I read that belly fat is caused by the deep brown fat that is very difficult to lose. I will be watching this thread for ideas.

I've always been--and still am--slim, but the weight has finally shifted and I have a belly pouch and arm jiggle. Does anyone have any recs as to what kind of exercises I can do to combat this? Most of what I've seen are for total body or weight changes and I am looking for something much more...targeted? Because my weight is right where it should be.
