Carla's masks fit me really well and they are extremely adjustable. I have a rather large head (forehead and length and diameter at top) but a smallish face (if that makes sense). Anyway -- these work!! You can tighten it as you wish.

Jenn, that mask looks great on you and what a clever solution!

Going down the mask construction rabbit hole I ran across this one,
https://media.rainpos.com/220/personal_mask.pdf
which is similar to Carla’s but has been modified to come in different sizes. I think the video said he also lowered the scoop below the eyes and angled the sides.

It is on fabricpatch.net
http://www.fabricpatch.net/fac.....relief.htm

Staysfit, I ran across this pattern but who knows how well it stays up. It could be buttoned in front and then spun around to the back?

@elpgal - I used the Marfy pattern (like rachylou):

https://www.marfy.it/free-mask.html

Modified for a nose wire, like rachylou did (link to her thread a couple of posts up). The Marfy pattern printed from the site is perfect for a small (woman’s) face. I enlarged it for a longer or larger/man’s face.

@staysfit - these threads have lots of ideas. They captured a lot of the processes as folks worked through a few prototypes and resolved some problems. My DS#2 says the fit of the ones I make are very close to an N95 (which he has to wear from time to time). It is fitted snug under the chin, and I make them in 3 size variations! No pocket for filter, but pattern could be adapted by leaving an opening at the bottom, instead of closing the seam between the front facing fabric and the lining.

Staysfit - I have been pondering the same question for my 85 year old MIL who also has limited arm raising capabilityfrom two blown out rotator cuffs. (BTW - the long handled brush and comb I got her for Christmas were a huge hit! https://www.amazon.com/Handled.....3TZ?ref_=s )

I decided on soft ear loops. You only have to raise your hand to ear level, not over the head. The t shirt yarn I mentioned (Chris987's DIY Facemask thread) seems to work well. The blue and white version is DD-approved for comfort. I used safety pins to fit the loops and just tucked them inside the casing as shown on the other side, but you could sew them once fitted.

My nose wire in #1/2 is soft copper 20 gauge jewelry wire. I have also twisted together two or three strands of lighter (26 G?) wire in the brown mask #5. I use pliers to make a spiral on one end that I can pinch on to to the outside of the nose casing to keep it in place, yet easily removed for washing or replacing (like Carla's bendy ties. I close one end of the casing, but you could leave open on do the bendy tie or wire spiral on both ends.

The blue one (#3 shows lining side) is from the original Olson mask pattern that has the filter pocket open on both ends. The brown #4 is my modification where I only have one filter pocket end open, and if I have the right fabric, I use the selvage edge instead of hemming the opening edge to reduce bulk. just line up what would be the hemmed length of the two side lining pieces on the selvage and check twice before cutting because the proper end is not intuitive!)

This is not a super snug fitting mask like an N95, but it is pretty comfortable and easy to wear. Honestly, no home made fabric mask is going to protect against significant exposure no matter how snug).

One advantage if you are taking on and off frequently over a period of time, you can remove one end from you ear and let it dangle off the other ear, then put back on swiftly with having to touch the front of the mask. It takes a bit of practice, and I would not exert with it dangling, but it has been pretty effective for my short forays into the Post Office, car repair and such.

I will have my MIL test when we do the grocery resupply and M-Day celebration later this week.

Angie, I did the latter (the JW masks also have pockets). I tried it with one over the top of the other, and that works fine, too. I wouldn't hesitate to double up with a mask that didn't have a pocket, but it's nice to only have one set of elastic to pop on.

Jenn, do you mean you are wearing TWO masks? Or did you place the paper mask as a filter inside the cloth mask?

I've placed a filter inside our Karen Kane masks - they have a special pocket - and that has worked well.

Runcarla, what mask pattern are you using? Does it have a pocket for a filter? Does it fit snugly under the chin and at the cheeks on most people? I am finding these are the vulnerable points with most patterns. I have wire for the nose area which helps snug that part to the face.

I am working out how to make a mask for my 80 year old mother who has many of the difficulties you mention above. She has a torn rotator cuff on one side and limited range of motion in her shoulder on the other due to polio as a child. She has arthritis, wears glasses and hearing aids, and is allergic to latex. Ear loops are not a good option given the glasses and hearing aids, etc. My ideas so far have been to use some sort of spandex loop adaptor at the back to which four ties can be attached. Another idea might be to make some sort of Velcro adjustment at the front of the mask, but Velcro is scratchy, and I do not have any in my sewing box. It would be a less attractive look, but probably allow a more secure fit. Any thoughts or suggestions?

That’s a great mask for you, Carla! I think what works can depend a lot on your face shape. Husband’s ears are set back, so the ear elastics are uncomfortable for him. Those are fine for me, but my face is longer from nose to chin, so the pleats work better than the shaped masks.

(Not all of ours have the channels either. Some have ties sewn on.)

I decided that I wanted a mask to match my colouring! (#1)

If anyone is having trouble finding a mask that fits, I’ll make and send you a couple to try. Just pm me with a mailing address.

FWIW - I think the ones with an elastic that loops twice around the head is probably the easiest to put on (especially for older folks, or people with shoulder issues that limit range of motion) but elastic is currently hard to find. If you have a mask you like that has channels sewn for the ties or over ear loop elastics, you can replace the ties with alternatives. Use a safety pin to thread the new tie through the channels. When I used up all my shoe laces and ribbon, I started sewing my own tapes with the same quilting cotton I use for the masks. (#2 made for my brother) I like these ties best, since they hold firmly and don’t slip down once fastened.

kellygirl, the ones with ties get tangled in my hair, so I don't like them, but they're my husband's favorite. It really is so personal, what works and what doesn't.

And thanks, Joy!

Clever solution! I hope to get my hands on some shaped masks this week. The ones with the ties keep sliding down my hair. YLF in a mask, btw!

I have tried a multitude of mask styles over the past few weeks, with varying degrees of success and comfort, but I think I finally have a handle on something that works for me.

Thanks to Zaeobi mentioning that most people where she is use fabric masks as a cover for plain ones, I put one of our handful of paper surgical masks inside the pocket of one of my pretty Johnny Was face covers. It works so well! The paper mask has a nose wire that I can adjust just how I need it, and the cloth cover makes me happy. And no glasses fogging! Success!
