Update: My Madewell shirtdress and cardi arrived today! Both seem to be of excellent quality. Great fit, both true-to-size. Love the little puff-shoulders on the dress; I was skeptical but they give just the right bit of structure and are very subtle. The cardi is a departure for me, but the length and volume are spot-on for this style and the wool is soft! They look great together, and I like that I'll be able to get extra mileage out of the dress as tunic and topper. I will post pics later this week.

FI, I bet we could do a whole thread on "the one that got away"...

I still think about a navy lace Catherine Malandrino dress that I found years ago at a little vintage shop and passed up because it cost all of $25. It fit perfectly but I was a dummy and put it back on the rack. By the time I went back it had been snapped up.

LP & Chris, I hear you on snapping something up in second hand stores. One of my first times at a flea market, there was a guy who made jewelry out of old chandeliers. The friends I was with had seen him before, so even though I really liked his stuff, I decided to think on it. Neither they nor I ever saw him again.

Thank you La Ped for responding to me about the boots and the wear. I understand now and the fact one pair was thrifted makes a big difference, as you say, they already had wear. I find my summer sandals ( as I'm a real sandal person not closed-in shoes, in summer) can get worn-looking quite quickly in a hot summer. I find it annoying!
Your new boots look stunning, hope they arrive soon.
You are right about if we keep things around 5 years ( which I do, or more!) then we have to be careful not to purchase too much as it leads to an overflowing wardrobe. This year has been a big editing year for me trying to only take things into the new house that I will really wear. Some items may have come into the new house that shouldn't have, but they will be in my face every day which may help me to make the big decision to let them go ( mother's dark red 1964 coat, which I adore but am not wearing).
I really adore the flippy orange polka-dot skirt in your Finds! Would look so cute on you.

Chris987, my current pair of tall boots are getting worse and worse in slippery conditions because I don't want to take them out of rotation to have them re-soled! This is what prompted me to order a second pair, tbh. If I wear something enough that I can't afford to not have it for a couple of weeks, it's a sign that I can justify adding to that category! I honestly don't love the look of dresses with shorter boots on me; I feel it can put a lot of emphasis on my calves somehow, whereas with a tall boot I get a more streamlined look. Just better proportions for me.

Cardiff girl, I'll be sure to post about what I do pick!

The Madewell cardi and black denim dress are on their way to me. :)

Thanks Runcarla! I tend to be more conscious of hair/skincare/etc when not I'm not shopping as well. With no shiny new things to distract, you have to come up with other ways to have fun.

Rachylou -- dark green triggers my preppy gene in a big way! It's irresistible.

Sal -- I'm thinking I'll roll an accessories challenge into the December "festive" challenge. Really, just a "Have More Fun!" challenge. ;)

Suz, it's true, hot and humid summers do a number on sandals and any shoes worn sock-less! If shoes are comfortable, I just tear through them, is really what it comes down to. And yes -- dresses should be perfect for the school setting, as long as I have good range of motion and everything is easy-to-wash. I already have a good little wool trousers capsule for the winter, and some of my jeans (like the saturated black ones from Everlane) pass muster as well.

Joy, I love your ideas for non-traditional holiday colour pairings. Maybe I'll pull my mint green Adidas out this month and pair them with berries and burgundies. I do like soft pink with dark green and olive too... I'll definitely post some pics of any new things that come in!

Mainelady, it's an interesting time of year to step into a teaching job because we're right between two vacations. It'll be go-go-go for the next few weeks, and then I can breathe for ten days. I took time to work on holiday gifts in November too (DS and I do a lot of making -- candles, beeswax kitchen wraps, herbal tea blends, etc). Pretty much all set now, except for baking (which is the most fun part of the holidays!).

FI -- that is a good frame of mind to be in!

ChrisM, I actually think it's wise to make exceptions for secondhand purchases. Most of the times I regret holding off on purchases are things I see at thrift stores that are gone by the time I go back for them. I always wonder if I should just pounce instead of hesitating, as it might save me from dropping lots more $$ on something brand-new down the road. I'm happy to know the challenge was helpful to you!

Nemosmom, glad the SYC challenge was helpful. I suspect you have the *perfect* colouring for dark green and cognac!

Bijou, I did the same. I always have to guide DH's hand a bit when it comes to gifts! I strongly encouraged him to snag a burgundy leather tote bag for me when it went on deep discount earlier in November. He rolled his eyes, but hopefully it will be under the tree anyway. ;)

Smittie, yes, the emerald green is sort of in a separate category from the hunter green and I wouldn't style them the same way. I tend to pair jewel tones with black and white, or with tweedy greys. I'm hesitating over the Amber and Winifred dresses because they're 3/4 sleeve which is so hard to layer (the sleeves always bunch up to my elbows under toppers!), yet too cold without a topper for the next few months. I think short sleeves like the Anita are actually a bit easier for layering. I'm envisioning it with most of my shorter toppers: the tweedy black/white jacket, black cropped cardi, and white denim jacket in spring and early fall. I think you're right that the Madewell pieces will be the easiest to incorporate -- and I think the black denim dress could make a good topper too as it can be worn open or closed...

Thanks Jenn! I'm sort of getting back to where I was before DS was born. I feel really privileged to be able to go back to work very progressively, rather than all at once. I actually just blew out a pair of jeans over the weekend (the fabric and stitching around the back pockets sort of disintegrated -- rats!), and while I can live without them for a while, I know I'll need to replace them by springtime. It's always something...

JAileen, buying things and then returning them is its own form of discipline!

Lynn, I have certain categories I suspect will need a rebuild soon (look at you, basics and underpinnings!) but it's nice to have things mostly under control for once.

Nomad, I am such a slow adopter of animal prints! But I'm getting there. I've been holding off on Black Friday/Cyber Monday the past few years because the sales seem to stretch right on into December now. And the discounts come Boxing Day are even better, if you don't mind gambling on things staying in stock...

Angie, I am on a quest for even more corduroy! And strongly considering the Boden blazer in the star print (worried I might be sized out, but we'll see).

Thank you, Style Fan, I can't wait to see your new additions!

Congratulations on the new job! I didn't join in on the No-shopping-vember (late November sales are too hard to pass up!), but I watched from the sidelines and enjoyed reading your analysis here. I really admire the way you took advantage of the break to do the analysis that will inform future additions... that's a very wise and measured approach.

I’m glad the shopping pause worked so well for you. It sounds like this new teaching job (congratulations, btw!) will be a bit of a lifestyle change, so it’s awesome that you got a chance to stop and think a bit about items that will fit your adjusted, busier lifestyle. It’s always nice to go into a new adventure with some clothes that make you feel great!

I broke my fast once this month for a souvenir from our mini-vacation—I bought a tank top I’ll wear mostly for sleep/lounge. Other than that, I’m right with you. I’ve been too busy to shop, but I’ve made note of needs. My two oldest pairs of jeans are thinning at the thighs and probably won’t last much longer. Also, I’d like at least one more long, lightweight cardigan. They are perfect both for indoors in Colorado winters and outdoors in SoCal ones.

I really like the idea of a bit of leopard mixed with hunter green.
I am thinking the darker greens would work better with the leopard, rather than the jewel-toned corduroy dress.

I have had my eye on the green belted dress but was concerned about the short sleeves. What are your thoughts on making it work?

I think the leopard skirt might be too short. My suggestion from among the items you’ve shown is the leopard cardigan and green dress.

I also love the black shirt dress for you. That is right in your wheelhouse and guaranteed to look sharp.

I bought some leopard booties from Janet last month and am not feeling them. I think they might be too light a colour, or too warm. I’ll need to think about it.

Love reading your wrap-up! Thank you for suggesting the SYC challenge. It helped me force myself to try new combos and dig deeper into the edit I started late summer. Thanks to you and the SYC challenge, I've been able to identify true holes in my wardrobe and see why some things weren't working.

I made it until almost the end of November without buying anything (darn you, Boden!) and have been able to carefully vet items before keeping them.

Thank you so much for starting the No-shop-vember!! I participated In the background because it came at a perfect time. My husband retired, and from a financial standpoint I NEEDED to shopping for me.

I did buy a couple of items - an EF merino dress (eBay) and a camel merino cardigan (Orvis clearance rack), both of which filled a closet hole (small, but annoying).

The important part is that I stopped the continuous browsing. Online can be pretty addictive.

Several items that I thought I wanted I don’t miss buying. A couple others are on hold.

Love reading about your planned purchases. And thanks again for sponsoring the challenge!!

You may be right about the need to add things. If I get to that point, I’m sure you’ll see it on the forum. But right now, I’m really not interested, even when I’m in the mall for other things.

Nice recap, LaPed. I hope December slows down for you a bit, so you can truly enjoy the merriment of the season.
My shop your closet was successful, but admittedly kind of easy, because several of the items I bought on my shopping trip with my sister last April were fall items and hadn’t been worn.
To resist temptation, I did not do much online browsing and found that I really missed it. I focused my searches to holiday gifts and have completed quite a bit of shopping in that area. Overall SYC was a win for me. Thank you for the challenge.

I did not join No-Shop-a ember but was cheering from the side lines and your spirit ( and closet editing) kept me from buying anything, although tempted by Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales.
This post really struck a chord with me. I loved your thoughts about wearing colors. I hope that you will show us some examples of that new color scheme you are dreaming about. I like to pair non traditional reds and greens as a nod to the holiday...like olive and red -orange or a deep red- brown or hot pink and mint green.

I love the idea of dresses, tights, and boots for you. Will that work well in the new job? I'm excited by all the rich textures, too, and love the Boden dresses.

How well I know and identify with your boot explanation to Jenni! Footwear gets such a workout in northern climates, Jenni, if people are walking at all in it, at least. And it's sort of the same for sandals, to tell the truth, at least for me -- the summer months are hot enough that they really take a beating as well. That's why traditionally a lot of my budget has gone to footwear and I pretty much have to buy some new items every year as I retire older ones. And I'm someone who has a large collection of footwear, relative to some! When I had fewer boots/ sandals in my closet, the start of each season was a time of panic as I desperately searched for that year's shoe!

I deliberately did not join the SYC challenge this month. Most of what I bought I will be returning, or it won't arrive until December...but I did a lot of online browsing and some ordering on Black Friday. Plus, I bought my consignment coat. But January/ February are usually my no-shop months, along with April and August. So I am still on track for that. :)

Sounds like you achieved your goals - well done!!

I did an accessory shop your closet and it went swimmingly til about the 20th...after that I sort of mooched along. I did make an effort to wear more jewelry and it did work.

I did end up adding three new items in November - one midi dress, and two beach dresses. Two were planned - one was not!

Congratulations once again on the teaching opportunity. Totally understandable that you will be super busy.

I stayed the course, and did not add any clothing to my closet. Have not posted a lot of WIW, because there are so many repeats of well loved combinations already seen in previous posts. I am happy in a pair of jeans, mariner top, red sneakers and a red coat - and don't crave anything new at the moment. I am working on my grooming, and enjoying learning about makeup techniques - but most of this isn't demonstrable in pics. Funny to be doing this at 58 years, but I finally have the time for self care at a leisurely pace rather than scrambling and scraping to find enough time to run a comb through my hair!

I appreciated the SYC challenge. It enforced a pause and continuing evaluation after the big closet edit in October.

FashIntern -- I think it makes perfect sense for you to be both adding and editing as you adjust to new climate lifestyle. I did what felt like A LOT of shopping/churning when we moved back to the northeast, and would not have been able to manage a shopping fast for very long.

MsMaven -- I agree with you that it's a very good season visually. I've been waiting for dark green to come around for a few years, so I'm happy to see it returning to stores! Makes my preppy gene happy.

Thank you Sterling!

Ah, Jenni -- I didn’t mean to make it sound as if I swap out my dresses and boots every couple of years, only that I haven’t added anything at all to those categories since 2016, so they’ve shrunk somewhat as I cull things.

A year ago, I had two pairs of tall boots, one black and one grey. The grey ones I got rid of at the end of last year because they were chewed up by a puppy I was dog-sitting (and the soles were worn down to nothing and not replaceable, so it was time for them to go anyway, but I’m terrible about keeping shoes long past their expiration date!). The remaining tall boots I purchased about two years ago, but they were thrifted so had a good amount of wear on them to begin with. And yes, the salt/sand on the roads and sidewalks does do a number on winter footwear. There’s a reason a lot of people opt for wellies and pac boots for everyday wear; the rubber is more indestructible and cheaper to boot (hah).

I’ve also passed on at least two dresses that had become too big (purchased right after DS was born). So now I’m down to four cold-weather dresses, one of which dates back to pre-baby, so 2012 or 2013, and the other three from 2015-16. I've been off winter dresses for a couple seasons, but now they’re seeming interesting again.

It’s actually quite unusual for me to get rid of something after only a year or two. Most things hang around for at least five years, if not longer, which is why I try to keep my overall numbers low!

Also, I think eight items for a month that's rich in sales and promotions is not bad at all! Smart shopping, if you will, especially when you have a strong sense of what you like/need.

Nice! I love that madewell sweater and was considering it myself. I am having a debate with myself about tall boots...I don't wear my one pair because they are a little too tight and not good in slippery conditions so I also don't wear dresses in winter much...but if I had boots that worked maybe I WOULD wear dresses. I love the dresses you are showing although Boden sizing does not work for me, maybe I'll go look for something similar.

Your "which pieces to buy and how many" description is really thoughtful...I need to study it more and learn from it....

Window shopping is great this year. I do like the Boden dresses, but it's been a long time since I've worn a dress in the winter. I don't think there can be too much planning before you leap into buying. The textures and colors you show would look wonderful together.

Although I officially did not participate in no-buy Nov, I did want to limit my buying to needed underwear. When I started bringing out my cool weather clothes, I found I needed to purge a lot more than I expected. So I bought 2 new cashmere sweaters.

Well go you for No-shop-vember! I didn't join you as you know because of the holiday/vacation (one maxi dress, two sparkly pairs sandals, and two pairs silver earrings later) and also on 26th, the day after I got back, my fave fave expensive knitwear brand Sabatini had their final extra-discounted factory sale with extra stock. Bought 3 things. I now own 10 items from them in my 170 or so items, so quite a good percentage, and on heavy discount- all made in NZ. I thought I had missed the factory sale as it was while I was away, so was excited when I got the email with an extension, even more discount and extra stock. So 8 items bought in November in the end.
I love your Finds that you are considering. Only one thing confuses me- do you really have to turn items over every 2 years or so? Your size hasn't changed lately with DS being 4? Is it because boots etc get totally worn out in your snowy climate?
Signing off, resident Kiwi forum tightwad!
