Plain charcoal is fine, Michelle. Nothing wrong with it! Just doesn’t hide dirt as well :0).

A grey coat is fabulous with a red scarf. But a red coat is a great idea too. Look out for both!

Yup! You’ve got the collar shape right. The revere collar on the cardigan is quite dainty so don’t be frightened to go more oversized for the coat.

My post on coat fits is due for Wednesday. I hope it makes sense.

False plain, tweed grey is a good choice. I love Sarah's suggestion of red as well!

I don't think there is anything wrong with a solid charcoal gray. I actually ordered the Land's End charcoal heather coat that you linked to. I did send it back, because it was "blah." I think if it has an interesting collar or other nice details, it would be fine. I think a false plain is just more interesting to look at, because the pattern creates textural interest. You would look lovely in red, and I tend to treat red like a neutral. I have a hard time thinking of things that might show under the coat that would clash.

I like the idea of a false plain, a twill or tweed that looks like a plain charcoal gray from a distance. Red is beautiful on you too. I think that is the type of collar Angie is recommending for you. I suspect that it could even be a deeper V if you use a scarf for warmth. Good luck on your hunt for a coat.

I'm not sure what collar Angie suggested for you, but I'd like to encourage you to try red. I'm thinking of what you have in your wardrobe and I don't think red would clash with anything. Red is such a pretty color on you, too. Grey is practical, but I don't know if it's fabulous. Maybe if you found a killer texture?

So today I think I'm going to retackle the coat hunt. Two final questions to help me focus my shopping:

I really do think I want a charcoal grey coat in a false plain of some kind. I think it would be most versatile in my wardrobe. However... I remember there was a movement afoot to get me to go with red. Am I right in thinking it wouldn't be quite as practical? Also, what exactly is wrong with just a solid charcoal grey; is it too boring, too much of a dirt magnet etc?

The last thing has to do with nailing down the collar shape, or at least making sure I understand what Angie is recommending. I'm covered on the knee-length and the princess seaming, pocket placement and other details. Angie, am I right that you're recommending a collar shape like the one on my new classic cardigan?
http://s709.photobucket.com/al.....8;newest=1

Thanks very much, guys. I may or may not be back with pics, depending on how this goes.
