I actually ordered the Land's End charcoal heather coat that you linked to. I did send it back, because it was "blah." I think if it has an interesting collar or other nice details, it would be fine. I think a false plain is just more interesting to look at, because the pattern creates textural interest. You would look lovely in red, and I tend to treat red like a neutral.
