I've found very little focuses my mind more than targeting a high-ticket item that I know I can really use. (I won't bore you with my experience with velvet jackets, except to say that they I find them more useful than pumps but less so than statement oxfords.)</p> <p>In other words, if you think your wardrobe needs a bit of sparkle, I urge you to stalk the Stuart Weitzmans or something else along those lines (here's a slightly cheaper pair on Yoox). My last "dressy" topper was actually a Free People sweater-blazer thingy in dark purple with metallic threads. It finally got too many snags and I retired it last year. They dated back to an earlier version of myself (think buffalo plaid mini-skirt, Doc Marten saddle shoes, purple sweater vest, etc), but not having them anymore leaves my style feeling a bit more stripped-down and minimal. Trying to rectify that in a way that still feels organic to my style is proving a challenge.</p> <p>Fashiontern, if you have specific metallic oxford/menswear-inspired shoes in mind, can you post a link or Find? I've done a couple searches for silver oxfords, but haven't seen any that catch my eye, except for the Stuart Weitzmans below, which even on sale are well out of my price range. </p> <p>I think I'm a bit of an enigma when it comes to shoes. There are certain design elements that I avoid like the plague, but I can't even really identify them until I see them. But it often means that my footwear preference skews minimalist rather than maximalist. I have a couple fantasy outfits in mind that would benefit from a pair of dressy navy shoes with a bit of a heel. I did a search for navy velvet ankle boots, and all the ones I looked at were "bleh" but these pumps for some reason are visually pleasing. Again, I think it's the absence of any details that trigger my gag reaction. (I must have some deep-seated shoe psychology!)</p> <p>Everlane shoe fit is really tricky. I have a pair of the leather slides from the summer (in navy, of course), and they fit perfectly. The street shoes are way too narrow for me, but I had to try when they came out with an olive version last year. I almost kept a pair of navy ankle boots last winter, because they fit great in the foot, but I disliked where the ankle hit both from a comfort and a flattery perspective. I still sometimes regret not keeping them, because apparently it's almost impossible to find a sleek-looking ankle boot in navy *leather* -- not suede or nubuck.&nbsp;</p> <p>I'm very much looking forward to the jacket. I don't know if I'll keep it -- I hardly ever bat for Team Gold, and I've yet to find anything at Zara that works for me. But in the spirit of wildcards and no stone unturned... Something about the gold + olive combo really speaks to me. A grunge cover of Sgt Pepper. It may not be the best for my colouring, but I'll have to try it on to see. More than anything, I like the vibe it gives off.&nbsp;</p> <p>Here are two other velvety items I'm eying -- the Day Heels from Everlane, which are supposedly comfortable. Navy shoes and I have a stellar track record, but it's been years since I owned a pair of pumps. Something about the shape of these strikes a chord, though in all likelihood they won't fit my feet anyway.&nbsp;And these adorable socks, which are also available in silver and olive (could match the jacket, but might be too much?), but I could only get the Find in blue, for some reason. They're all great colours, I'm actually torn over which I'd order if I decide they're worth trying. Festive socks might be tricky in a cold climate. There's no way I can showcase them against a bare leg, but I could layer them over sheer tights, or have them peek out from under cropped pants.&nbsp;</p> <p>Please, do not hesitate to talk me in/out of these things, or suggest your own velvet (or generally shiny/textured/patterned/colourful) items. I've got aI think three low-key holiday events between now and New Years, so if any of these are keepers they'll have a chance to see some immediate wear.&nbsp; </p>
