Oh you look wonderful! Hooray. I just try to be proud of my efforts if I look the most dressy in a group. Good to know that easier to walk in shoes would fit in though. Uncomfortable feet are not good.

I love the bright cardigan with the dress and the metallic accessories really pop. Too bad others didn’t dress up, but I don’t think your outfit is too over the top even if others were wearing their office attire.

You look great!

This is beautiful outfit you put together!
Nowadays it is nigh impossible to anticipate the perfect note to strike, but also as Angie says, that gives us lots of leeway to look our fabbest!
Also I look at these occasions as “ outfit labs” to try out my ideas, including how to dress up an item or ways I’d dress down so I can wear something multiple ways.

How pretty you look in that outfit! I've never encountered "festive" as a dress code before, but I love it, because to me it suggests clothing that makes you feel happy and special, without worrying too much about what others are wearing. I think you struck just the right note.

Thanks, all! I think I’d have worn this with nice but comfier shoes, but was really happy overall.

Joy, I ended up walking from the subway because the bus was not coming, and that was a mistake. I can’t walk comfortably at my normal NYC pace in those shoes, since my foot slides in them when I have hose on. They were fine for drinking cocktails and slowly circulating around the exhibit. In the future, I have to find those things to stick in the insoles to stop my feet from sliding around.

Rachylou, I feel like performances of all kinds are a mix nowadays.

Anyway, here I am. In the future,
I’ll just wear normal shoes and black tights, which even the dressier people did. My dress would have stood out even if I had worn those things, and my feet would have been happier. I am glad I wore the dress because it was fun, but I guess people coming from work just wear a nice version of their work wear.

Lol. Such is the state of things. Like at the ballet that I just went to: one person in glittery evening sandals, next person in jeans. I didn’t see sneakers, but I probably didn’t look hard enough. It has all inspired me to comb Pinterest for evening gown ideas. Hahaha! Must. Defy.

How disappointing that people didn’t take the opportunity to dress up. Seems like that’s the way it is now. Or let’s be generous and assume they came right from work. As long as YOU felt fab, that’s all that matters.

This event is today. I'm going to post a pic later, because I've actually decided NOT to wear this outfit to work - I thought I'd be too cold walking to work from the subway. That would have been true, as it was windy. I have the outfit with me, and thank heavens the dress is scuba and won't wrinkle. I'll leave what I'm currently wearing at work overnight.

The sweater is less orange than it looks on my monitor. I decided that was a better option than a wrap, so that my arms will be more easily covered when I have my coat on outside. I think the bag is not an ideal match (esp for the shoes), but it's festive. This was my best option among bags large enough for my needs today, and I have way too many bags that size to be going to buy another one.

ETA: I'm attending a Members Preview party for this: https://www.metmuseum.org/pres.....te-gardens

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

I’m not going to wear the purple dress, unless there’s a really compelling weather reason. For instance I think it would look better with tights and booties. I’m going to try a cardigan I ordered, but otherwise I’m going to want a better sense of what the weather will be. I have to figure out how I’m going to layer under outerwear.

tanstaafl - my bag options are a bit limited because I’ll be coming from work and will need something moderate, unless I decide to leave most of my stuff locked in my desk overnight. Or I may be able to check a tote bag at the museum if I leave no electronics in it. Then I’d take out a clutch. I’m unsure about that. They can be squirrelly about what they will let you check. I’ll have to change at work anyway, but that’s okay.

I have a rose gold dome bag from Kate Spade, but I’m not sure if that will go with the silver shoes. I’ve never been much of one to match my shoes my bag. But still. If I can bring a clutch,
I have a one in a pewter metallic, similar to Suz’s new boots actually. Jewelry is no problem.

I like the top shop dress, but not nearly as much as the floral dress. It looks perfect for a festive garden theme. The silver shoes look great with it, so if you can wear the heels go for it.

Have you decided on a topper? You mentioned a cardigan, but what about a pashmina or other wrap? Are you sorted for jewelry and bag?

Aquamarine, the need to support arts institutions more coincided with a boost in our income. We were happy to pay more for our annual Met membership. The new party invites were a nice perk. Problem with the parties is that we don’t know anyone else there. We do feel pretty fancy, though. It’s a nice date night.

Suz, you’re absolutely right. I’m definitely discovering dressy capsule needs as I go along. These shoes are promising, via Barking Dogs:
https://www.6pm.com/p/sofft-al.....ct/9035242

Magpie alert!

I wore the Caleigh shoes to the museum at Christmas time. But that was for a concert, and I said almost the whole time. But that was for a concert, and I sat almost the whole time. Since this is a viewing of an exhibit plus a little cocktail party, the opportunities to sit will be fewer. As you point out, there will be lots of standing on the marble. That’s why the floors at the Met are tough.

I’m also starting to think about the topshop dress and wondering how it would look as a tunic over cropped black pants. I don’t think I would wear that instead, given the theme of the party. But it’s a future outfit idea for cooler weather.

I’ve also included my other garden party wish list dresses is just for fun.

Oh, if the dress is scuba it will be plenty warm with.a pretty cardigan or some other topper -- no problem!

Marble is really tough to stand on, yes -- no question. It is easier if you are walking than just standing. I found it really hard when I worked in retail.

Hmmm. Since you will be doing events like this now as a member...I'm wondering if some sort of wedges might be a good purchase, the kind with a rubbery sole that gives protection, and also some sort of padded insole in the shoe itself...

Or check out Barking Dog. They might have some good recommendations. It might be time to experiment and pick out an all purpose "museum shoe." It might not be what you'd pick first for other dressy occasions, but it might protect you better on those hard floors and still look appealing. https://www.barkingdogshoes.co.....for-women/
