YES! But I wear a hat all the time when I am outdoors. Winter sun is still damaging - particularly where I live. Summer straw, winter felt - always with a brim.

So many good points. I never thought of a hat as nose protection from snow, or glasses protection from rain, or hair protection from wind! A fedora or a tweedy brimmed newsboy would do all those things (newsboy! Tweed! Something new on the radar!)

I always wear sunglasses, so maybe that’s part of why I usually don’t wear brimmed hats. It does feel like a lot going on in a small area of head.

You should get one and wear it. If you think about it, wearing earrings and such serves no useful purpose for warmth or wind/sun protection either. But you like hats and look good in them. So why not?

Every couple of years I decide THIS will be the year I wear a felted, brimmed hat so I find one I love (I like hats a lot, they seem to look good on me and fit well ) buy it, and then take it off every time I head out the door with it on. I never know where to wear it or what to do with it. I do get hat hair, which is not great, plus I hit it on the inside roof of my car getting in and out, and feel utterly self-conscious the whole time I have it on. I think it serves a very specific purpose : wearing to market gardens and greenhouses in the fall, and doing some boutique shopping on a weekend. In other words - my fantasy life . Ha.

I love the idea of hats but I don't think I look particularly good in them. I would probably wear a felt fedora though if I found one that looked good on me. My kids play soccer all fall so it's nice to wear a hat, even on cooler days, to keep the sun off my face. Also, it can be windy and hats keep my hair contained. Most people just wear gear and baseball hats but since I really hate baseball hats on me, something more "fashiony" would be my preference.

I’m a fan. Brimmed hats are great in the fall for those of us who wear glasses...maybe not as much here in Colorado, where autumn is dry, but on my trips to Seattle I’m always happy to have one to keep the rain off my glasses.

Go for it!

I've worn a winter hat with a brim because I HATE getting snow on my nose! My favourites were a dusty pink I wore with a brown coat (in the 80's) and a navy one I wore with a light grey coat in the 90's. This winter I am into berets.

Hat head can be an issue, and those with long, smooth hair don't seem to have post hat issues the same as short or curly haired folks. I just run my hands through my hair to fluff things up after wearing a hat.

I don't have a fedora and don't wear hats in fall or winter, but that is because I have long hot summers where hats and caps are essential for about 4 months, so come autumn I don't want to wear hats anymore.

I actually don't have any fedoras, mainly because one of my BFFs has made it a signature look. But also I don't love the way they look on me.

My favourite type of hat is a newsie or fisherman's cap, followed by berets and cloches. I have a pink linen fisherman's cap that I wear in the fall until it gets too chilly, and then switch to beanies. I'd love to have a slouchy tweed newsie specifically for fall. I've been looking at these for a couple of years now and ought to save up for one: https://www.etsy.com/shop/ZUThats

I have a few. I’ve always loved hats and have hung onto my collection (some are 20+ years old) even as they’ve fallen in and out of favor. It’s hard for me to find the right fit (small head), so I’m reluctant to let go of them when I have good ones that look good on me.

I don’t wear them a ton. I have to keep the rest of my outfit simple to feel like I can wear a hat without feeling OTT. It’s complicated by the fact that I need to wear glasses for much of the day — hat + glasses + earrings or whatever jewelry or scarf I wear can be a lot of accessorization for my taste. I’m not big on maximal, so I keep the color tonal with the rest of my outfit.

In the last few years, I’ve gotten way more use out of my slouchy cashmere berets than my fedoras — they’re just easier in so many ways. No hat hair, easy to take off and cram in my bag if I get warm, and they won’t blow off in a strong wind. So fedoras really don’t seem practical at all to me — strictly a fashion thing.

I think that hat looks great on you.

I have two wool fedoras - a very nice one and a cheap one from the Gap. I wear them in fall and winter here. It’s sunny year round and a hat protects my face from sunburn. Plus it’s good for rain when/if that ever happens. And really I could wear them in the summer too - it’s never that hot, and the wool versions look sharper than my cheap paper straw fedora.

But I don’t wear mine nearly as often as I should. Maybe this year I will get in the habit.

I love the idea of fedoras, have two for fall / winter and a couple straw for summer. I do reach for the summer hats but not the cooler weather options. If it’s cold I wear a beanie, and I guess I feel like I’m trying too hard with a fall fedora. The Pinterest gals rock them, right? I live in a casual town and sometimes feel like even though I’d love to don fashion forward ideas I balk

I like both the ones you are trying Jessi! Maybe a very slight preference for the second one. I have bought 4 Autumn/winter hats from 2012-2016 and just don't wear them. Have now sworn off them! I have a blue felt, black felt, black'n'white stripe, and a fluffy Russian type one. Sigh.

Choosing the color was quite easy. There was a black option - a NO for me, I already have black hats. Then there was burgundy. A beautiful color but I found it too predictable I guess. Plus, Ive already got a bright red fedora thats almost 15 years old now but still going strong. So then there was this brownish taupe color. I really liked it on me and with my style going in a softer direction plus the price beeing very reasonable I just gave it a go. As the weather has been so hot for the last days I havent started outfitbuilding but it worked with the navy coat and, I don't know, I just trust my feelings that somehow it will work out.

With hats its usually that way. I just see something, put it on and when I like what I see I run with it. Hats add so much persona to what youre wearing - so I always try to find something thats fitting for me rather then working with everything, beeing fashionable etc. The ones I bought for these reasons seem to gather dust and sadly dont get worn much.

Come fall I put my hats on a shelf at the front door and grab one that fits my mood that day. If they were in a closet, upstairs, I would always forget them. And when I go inside I put them on a coat hook or maybe a window sill. Plus - women can keep their hat on in more situations then its suitable for men. That helps too.

And I relly like the one your trying on in the first pics. Would it fit with your lifestyle? Regarding the commute - this one is not that big IMHO and carrying a bag will usually require more space on the subway then any hat one will reasonably wear on a daily basis, except one would have an official position at a racetrack me thinks ;-).

Definitiv YES from me. Im an avid hat wearer and just bought this one to wear it with black, navy and plum colored coats. For me it's just everyday wear and I love wearing hats as a completer piece in autumn (funnily enough not in spring - hmmm). I've got very fine hair and so any hairstyle would be destroyed after a few minutes outside in autumn weather - due to wind, rain etc. maybe that's why I don't care about hat-hair so much.

It’s time for the annual “temptation of the fall fedoras.” And this year there are brown ones, not just black- even more tempting. I love hats, I look good in hats.... but they just seem so impractical.

I mean, straw hats in summer provide shade and hide beach-hair. Beanies in winter are necessary for warmth. But what purpose is served by wearing a felt hat in the fall? It just seems like an extra complication and yet there’s no denying it can really add something to an outfit (provided one remembers to wear it).

Do you wear fedoras? Where and when? How do you deal with the drawbacks: hat hair, what to do with it when you go inside, how to prevent it from wapping fellow subway-riders, etc.
