Shannon: I had a huge flare of PF last summer --- on my trip, no less. I did some research, and found a European study that suggested the use of one exercise every day --- I can't find the study (it was a big, respected study), but I found this article. The "weight load" exercise is the one I do. It is really hard at first -- I do it on a stair, with a railing, in case I need a little help. I got relief incredibly quickly, and I've kept it in my regimen. Just an FYI, use it if it helps, ditch it if it doesn't!

I have horrible feet. Super fussy. Wide front, high arch and narrow heel. Pretty much everything gives me blisters. And we're talking deep, takes weeks to heal blisters that happen very very quickly.

I ordered the first two in January when I was in the US and I've just ordered the last two (the first two are so comfy, I am gambling on the last two fitting as it's not worth sending them back from here...).

I am so in love with the Veras (1 & 2), especially the tan colour - goes with everything, gives me hight and kind of cushy... Apparently the sole has memory foam or some such thing.

I'm hoping 3 will be as comfy as it appears to have the same sole. And the reviews for 4 are amazing, so I have high hopes for them too. I know they will make my legs look shorter and wider, but at this point, I don't care, as long as they don't hurt me and are kind of cool!

I have a couple of pairs of Finches from bared.com.au, but they run a little narrow for me in the front and I had to stretch them (I own a shoe stretcher - I have no choice!).

Naot shoes can accommodate orthotics, but it's hit-and-miss. I wore a pair of Naot Oxfords for years that were great, but the Mary Janes left my toes cramped.
I have the same issues as you (worse bunions), and have had PF. I would recommend Alegria, although be forewarned that the extremely low volume feet might not work. The shoes are stable, great for bunion and PF, and an array of other foot problems.
Now, the look....well, it takes some adjustment. They are not flattering, but might be considered funky. Nurses will give you oodles of compliments, but that's because they understand.
With Alegria, I don't wear orthotics, but I do wear Correct Toes. They would be by go-to shoes everyday, if my feet had more volume under the Mary Jane strap.

Suz on "Feet & Shoes Update"

I think Sharan makes a really great point. I do not have PF or other diagnosed foot issues, but I do notice that my feet are fussier as I get older for sure. And one thing I know without question is that for me, a change really IS a rest. Wearing the same shoe all the time is a killer for me, especially if I am on my feet a lot and walking. That is why I have such a heavy suitcase!

It's so interesting how different people's needs are, too. I have never needed arch "support," exactly -- but I want the arch to be in the right place. And when it isn't, it drives me bonkers. I just won't buy a shoe if the arch doesn't feel right to me.

This is one reason that flats rarely work for me. The other being that I fly out of them and have to work so hard with my toes to stay in.

Shannon, do you know what type of shoe you are hoping for? I mean, in an ideal world it would be fashionable and not frumpy, obviously. But do you have certain colours in mind? And should it be a full shoe or is a sling back okay, or what are some of the other parameters? This is for workdays, right? I think you are probably pretty well covered for weekends?

Shannon, I also have PF and have found Naots to work well for me. I tried on the EF sandals Angie showed above and found they had little arch support. They are super cushy and would be comfortable for people with "normal" feet, but really zero bump where the arch support should be.

I have the Naots you linked to; mine are mushroom colored, and I wore them in outfit 2 here. I found the Kork-Ease booties below to be winners, even more comfortable than the Naots, though I think my feet may just want to be in different supportive shoes each day, rather than the same ones. I also just bought the Naot sandals below, but I'm debating whether I got the correct size or not. The arch support is terrific in them.

Shannon, I got the first EF flats that Angie suggested in both colors. It has been too cold and snowy to wear them outside yet but they are very comfortable around the house. The wide strap is fabric and very soft. No rubbing or pressure on a nerve. I ordered in my regular size and a half size up. My regular size is what I kept but the half size larger was not that much different. I am seriously considering the second pair Angie posted in red or metallic.

I feel your pain. I had foot surgery a couple of years ago and footwear is a major issue with me. I have had good luck with Gentle Souls. My favorite style is the Wedge Hammer. It has been around for a few years and I keep a pair in bronze and black. I can wear them all day.
The straps are elastic so adjust to your foot shape, and the heel strap stays secure. The footbed is memory foam covered by doeskin. Being a wedge, they are very stable. They are really, really, comfy.
Good luck!

Nebraskim - thank you for chiming in. Birkenstocks are a Godsend for me and I will be living in them come summer. So glad they're having a fashionable moment. And yes, a sole that is too soft or flexible is horrible for my PF. Acupuncture....hmmm...

Wow - you ladies have been busy! And wonderful :)

Angie - don't you dare apologize for anything :)

Peri - crushed by a horse? My goodness. Please let us know how the EF shoes work for you.

Lisa - I think that for comfort we do actually have to give up some degree of flattery unfortunately. But I also think you can wear some not traditionally flattering items in an intentional way in an ensemble and achieve a good look. It's all in the supporting act.

Rachy - the cut out under the arch is a huge concern for me, particularly if the sole isn't wide enough. That's what messed up my foot in the first place with those black sandals I bought last summer.

Textstyle - thank you for chiming in about the EF shoes. The more info I get, the better.

Elle - I completely forgot about Barking Dogs - will check it out. Thanks.

Suz - thank you so much for your thoughts. I do find Clarks a pretty good bet for me. And I will just put the Ara's into the holding zone for now so I don't do anything hasty. I'm going to wear the Steve Maddens around the house this weekend to test the comfort and may consider the black.

Dianthus - I don't think I've ever tried Teva - will have to check it out.

I truly appreciate the time and effort it took to provided with these options and information. Thanks so much.

There's lots here for sandals. Now I just need to narrow down some options for shoes since it will still be 2 months before we're in sandals here.

My PF, which I've had off and on in varying degrees of pain since about 1986, responded well to accupuncture. It was a miracle for me. Also you may want to experiment with using athletic tape for support (worked for me when my PF flared so badly on a vacation that I could hardly walk) I've also used night splints, physical therapy, and a therapy involving electrical stimulation. But the accupuncture was the killer app. I have given up on cute fashionable shoes though. I wear my danskos and sanitas almost exclusively. Good luck. It's a really vexing problem. ETA I do wear prescription orthotics in my running shoes, Birkenstock insoles in other shoes (like my Converse), and I never wear shoes like flip flops. I can tell within seconds of trying a shoe on if it's going to inflame my PF.

Have you tried Teva wedge shoes? They are quite nice looking. I tried them but they were a bit too loose in the front of the foot but I have flat skinny feet so they might work for you.

I really like the low metallic wedges Suz posted. I was envious of her Sofft pair from last year and got a Naturalizer pair locally that looked similar and are very comfy. They work with a lot of looks too.

OMG, I just lost a HUGE post including links and ideas. SO frustrated. My internet was down all day and now this.

I don't have time to go back over the whole darn thing, but for now, HUGS!!

And also, CLARKS. The sandals are intriguing this year -- a few samples before. (And I apologize that the links are not there...they all come in different colours). A few shoes that come in wide, too.

Also, how about duplicating the Steve Madden in black if it works for you? I got it yesterday and love (except it is hard to do up.) Thank you for the tip! Saved my travel bacon.

Lisa mentioned 9 West in her post -- one of the few pump styles to stay on me is their mini wedge. Not a fashion statement, for sure, but acceptable and very soft leather.

Oh - and hang onto the Aras for next year. You never know. My friend who had PF was not healed fully for over a year. And she ONLY wore gym shoes for the year.

I tried those first EF flats but they just didn't work for me. I can't remember if they were just too narrow or if it was the support issue. It was a while back.

Anyway, I recently got the Munro Pisces and a pair of The Flexx Beglad - both in black - to try out. I've been sick and haven't really had a full chance to test both enough to make a final choice, but the Flexx ankle strap isn't the most comfortable (though I prefer the look of them). The Munro's seem very comfortable (I got a W in those) but are very casual.

ETA: Oh, I did size down 1/2 size on the Flexx after reading reviews and it seemed to be the right choice. I got a M not wide and they are good in the width so they do run large.

I haven't gone clinical yet, but I have all those foot problems. I have yet to find a replacement for these discontinued New Balances that worked well - but there were a couple of important things about them why they were recommended. First, full lace up (I have a lot of "roll", tendency to pronation besides the rest) and second, the soles didn't have that cut-out at and under the arch many shoes have. They were solid. Anyways, so now I'm at odd ends too.

Another thing I note, my shoes - including the NBs - only last about three months with limited wear. As soon as the heel wears down (and I wear them down unevenly), it makes my knees hurt. I buy in bulk.

I am really loving the sneakers with dresses trend right now. I think these sorts of foot problems have contributed to the whole fashion idea.

Anyways... this has been a completely tangential post...

I had the same problem with the Edelman Trina's. That front strap did not cross over at the right place and the bunion was made even more noticeable. So upsetting because they are great looking sandals. I found the same thing happened with the Okalas. Grrr. I don't mind those Naots with the elastic - but let's face it - they are flat shoes with straps. Not going to be terribly flattering. Do we have to abandon flattery for comfort? Another grrr. I just feel so short and dumpy wearing shoes like that. Is it an eye adjustment that needs to be made? Sorry - I'm moaning away about myself on your post. Lol.

I so feel your pain...both literal and fashion. I know I've posted such many times before but when both feet have been crushed by a horse, shoes are a real issue. I admire how you do so much better than I do, because I wear gym shoes in 99.9% of my waking hours and the fashion police can just deal with it!

The second pair of EF Angie linked should arrive here today! I will let you know what I think.

And wow, I'm butting in to PM Elizabeth too. I do feel that orthotics have kind of ruined me in a way.

Carole - those sandals are gorgeous! And normally Sam Edelman work for me but unfortunately not the Trinas. I tried them last summer when they first came out and the strap across the front hits me in just the wrong spot

Angie - thank you soooooo much I really appreciate your comments on this issue. I know you understand the whole fussy feet thing. I can definitely see those EF shoes working with my spring/summer wardrobe - the VC tube skirts, my EF drape front dresses, the cropped pants and the new pair of EF black cigarettes pants I just received yesterday (gorgeous little pants with zippers on the back of the ankles - off being shortened by Wonder Woman). These may be worth the risk...

I feel your pain, Shannon! I suffer from bad bunions and know how hard it is to find comfortable fashionable shoes! I'm fortunate that I'm retired and don't have to dress up for work allowing for lots of comfy low heeled options. I love shoes Angie linked to. Might check those out for myself, but I've had good luck with shoes lately and my closet is full!

My latest purchase was another pair of the Sam Edelman Trina sandal, this time in neutral. Love that they can be worn with just about anything...not sure if they would work for you but LOVE mine! I ordered them from 6pm...

Wear them with the right support act, and you will be FINE. (They are a top pick and very comfy). Wear them with the black cropped pants you asked about a few days ago - the ones you pinned. No problem at all. Great with a black pencil skirt and dresses with black in them.

Angie - I had actually posted about nine months ago a pic of the first pair of EF flats you've linked to but there were some concerns from the collective that they would be too stumpifying on me. But you know what? I no longer care about stumpifying! If the shoe is comfortable, that's the main thing. The reviews of both of those EF shoes are absolutely stellar - unfortunately no place in Canada to buy so would have to risk the high cost of U.S. ordering. May consider though.

Lisa - I have a pair of Naot Mary-Jane pumps that have the most comfortable footbed of all of my shoes and I think it's a brand that may have to become my "go to" brand. And for foot straightening, I've been using Bunion Booties for a couple of weeks now (you sleep with them on) and they are really helping. Plus I do the frozen ice bottle for rolling my arch.

ETA: Here's a pair of Naot shoes that are similar in style to the first EF pair Angie linked to. Not quite as sleek that's for sure but they are available locally and I suspect the arch support would be a bit better. Too frumpy?

Glad to hear about the orthotics overuse. I totally agree, both DH and I have abandoned ours and have been better off without them.

I truly sympathise with your problems, and not wanting to resort to frumpy shoes.. There seems to be a lot more variety in all kinds of footwear this spring, so good luck and keep searching.

I'm in the same boat. No plantar F, but the other issues are similar. I have no answer, sadly, but will be following this thread with great interest. I tried on almost every single pair of booties and shoes at European Footwear in January and even shoes designated as comfort shoes aren't always that. There is a Naot clog/sling back shoe that is pretty cool (nicer more refined toe) that I have on order that you might like (my bff is the MB/SK Naot rep) and they also had an ankle bootie in black/smoke metallic that was very nice. I'll dig up some pictures and send them to you.

fwiw - I am using some non-prescriptive devices I bought at Diamond Athletics for straightening a foot with a bunion and keeping the toes flat. It works really well. Doesn't cure it per se, but keeps the foot from getting worse.
