Janet, there's no guarantee that kids will take care of you either - sometimes they're the perpetrators!

That has to be so hard. I am sure those people appreciate all you do for them. I wish families took better care of each other. I've had a chance recently to see a lot of people coping with addiction and mental health problems, and it's sad how alienated many of them seem to be from their families, although often for good reason.

Someone once asked me if it bothered me that, since I never had children, I would have no one to take care of me in my old age. I replied that I never worry about who is going to take care of me in my old age because I intend to do as much for myself as long as I possibly can. I have a very strong independent streak.

Una, you do provide a such a wonderful service, but I see how it can bring you down at times. My own great-aunt was being ripped off by her caretakers. Thank God for a small town bank that noticed unusual transactions and called my father, 3000 miles away. Thank you for what you do!

My great grandfather was a small town doctor during the depression. I have one of his office ledgers and it shows that some patients paid him in chickens, other provisions, or by doing laundry. I also have a five dollar gold piece a patient paid him with after gold currency was outlawed. He couldn't spend it so he gave it his daughter (said great-aunt) who wore it as jewelry, as do I.

And here's a martini and some flowers. (Photo taken in my kitchen last week!)

maryk, you beat me to the post. i travel lots. my hubs is super awesome in many ways including dead reliable airport pick up. but he just does not think to check in with me when i am away. so, i could have been in a hijacked or dropped off a mountain side and he wouldn't know abt it until the day i was supposed to come home.

to be fair, i may have trained him to be this way since it usually is hard to get a hold of me even if i am in town.

Una - thank goodness these people have you looking out for their best interests. Like Anna, we see so many unfortunate elderly people in our hospital. I find it so sad when we need to discharge a patient and there is literally nowhere for her to go - unable to go home alone because she still needs some after care but no family or friends available/willing to help out.

Anna, Mr. K is an awesome guy in many ways but I have had two surgeries in the past few years and each time it was my BFF who drove me to and from the hospital and stayed with me while I recovered, while Mr. K was out of town on business.

Just sayin'

I love my 88-year-old mother's comment: "Getting old is not for the faint of heart!" Confined to a wheelchair after struggling with Parkinson's for the last decade and breaking her hip a few years ago, I've got to say she manages to live her life with more grace and dignity than than I would under similar circumstances.

Yeah well it pretty much happened to me when I had my stroke mimicking migraine that turned into an overnight stay in the hospital. My own father couldn't get his **** together to come see me.

Anna, that often happens to my clients - I have the state taking over one guy because he is too much for his daughter (or anyone, really)... but often ther eis no one up here and there are lots of single men who came up here to remain wild and free, who are now just alone and vulnerable.

That said, friends and relatives are often there too, so although marriage is one answer, it doesn't always end up working out as planned. My friend with a neuro disorder who needs help herself now has a spouse with a terminal liver disease. I have many single or widowed clients who have other options.

Man, this is a depressing thread - sorry! I need a martini.

I work at a public hospital and have unfortunately seen cases where a patient was found down after a certain amount of time.
One of the selfish reasons I want to get married, is that I want someone there for me in case things go south.
One of the most heartbreaking histories I read was of a patient where the hospital took over decision making because that patient had nobody.
