I think it will be a great colour on you. I do not see it as a witchy colour.

I prefer the dusky or murky shades to the clearer ones. I like the colour inspiration Notsaf posted - green and mustard could work well with it.

I always have a few purple-ish items in my closet, but I don't think I've ever owned anything mauve. It's a very hard colour for me to wear, along with blush. A friend of mine has colouring that's very similar to yours, Liesbeth, and she always looks smashing in soft, dusty purples and pinks.

My purple needs to be a lot darker, reading almost black from afar, either wine or eggplant. I'm attracted to a certain very pale lavender as well, the kind that verges on silvery-grey. I used to have a striped sweater-vest in royal purple and black. It probably gave off a strong witchy vibe, but I loved it to pieces, literally.

I recently have come to love mauve. I have a puffer and sneakers in a similar color. I think. Mauve? Blush? REI calls the puffer color "peppercorn".

Thanks suntiger & jaileen!
Rachylou, you get the picture! No crushed velvet for me ;)
Shevia: I bet you look great in purple with your hair!
Notsaf: yummy color palette & thanks for the suggestion. I sort of self-categorize as a soft summer but I did have an ochre top as a teen that did not look horrible on me ;). Will keep in mind!
Jessikams: I saw some lilac last year, now I'm not really seeing a pattern yet to the shades out there, but yes, more purple in general would be nice (for me)!

I am not surprised at all to find that you, TG, and I all like muted purples! (Team cool summer/winter over here.) Personally, I find the shade has to be just right not to wash me out or go too sweet, but when it's right it's so good! Attaching a photo that was one of the first I pinned this season for color inspo (from interiors, but translatable to fashion). I wouldn't count out a splash of ochre on you, Liesbeth...

Anyway, LOVE to skirt outfit and hope you can make it work or recreate with a similar piece.

I hear you about the witchy thing, but this palette is inspiring! Esp with the sort of modern geometric pattern like the skirt has (bummer on the skirt!). I think just stay away from the crushed velvet and big silver shoe buckles and everything is ok!

The Cat & SarahD: thanks, that is really useful strategy that I don't really use yet... will flex my creative muscles!
Janet: aubergine is lovely too, I'm hoping to see it as well
TG: head to toe mauve... mouthwatering!
JamC: thanks for the vote of confidence!
SaraL: good to know there's other purple wearers :).
Also, SarahD8, I wonder if the elastic could be widened. It's all sewn into the gathered waistband so I should think it an expensive alteration. I am considering asking about it though, as it's a pretty unique skirt... But it was also already expensive to purchase...

That skirt looks great on you! Too bad the waist is too tight. Any chance the problem is the length of the elastic and not the actual fabric of the skirt? That would be an easy fix...

I agree with The Cat that adding a bit of light color to purple + dark neutral outfits can be a good strategy. (And, lately I’m pondering the usefulness of an actual color, as opposed to lightening an outfit with white...it’s less stark that way.) It seems like your new mauve scarf could work well for that purpose. And maybe also that other new scarf you bought, with the light blue abstract pattern?

Ultimately though my vote for dealing with witchiness is to embrace it and burn down the patriarchy instead.

Oh, too bad the skirt doesn't fit right. I hope you find something similar this fall. I wear lots of purple in the fall/winter. It always seems too dark for spring/summer but it's one of my favorite colors for winter. I don't think of it as being witchy.

I love mauve! So elegant and soft. There is a store called RW&Co in Canada that *almost* always carries some version of it, regardless of season or what's trendy ... it's almost part of their signature palette. (although they seem to be doing a richer muted purple-y colour for fall, it still appears in some of the patterns and accent pieces).

I am not really much of a mauve person, but I’ve shied away from purples in the last few years for some reason (they haven’t been available for one thing). I think the dusty shades don’t do a lot for me, flattery-wise. But I enjoy them on others. However, I’d be happy to see some deep, not bright, purple shades like aubergine.

I imagine all soft purples will look great on you. From what I have seen in fashion magazines and on fashion websites so far, purple will be noticeable this fall--and will probably be welcomed by many who don't look great in earth tones, which seem to be everywhere the coming season.

Regarding your fear of looking witchlike: I don't think you need to worry. But a tip you might find useful is to avoid wearing dark purple together with black / charcoal / dark navy without adding a light colour as well. A stylist I know recommends that in order to bring a dark outfit to life you should always add a touch of a light colour (i.e. white, cream, blush, or light blue), preferably somewhere near your face. (Think jewellery, top, topper, hat, scarf or eyewear.) I think Angie often uses the same trick.

LOVE THIS SCARF FOR YOU!!! So glad you bought the scarf when you saw it as by the time you go shopping for a winter scarf that would have been the one against all others are benchmarked. This shade is definitely mauve and not at all witchy. I wear a bit of lilac / orchid (having my own capsule) and find it a nice alternative to blush - it co-ordinates in a very similar way, I have put my favourite bag in finds.

That skirt is beautiful on you and definitely flattering, a perfect addition to your work wardrobe. However you need the right fit, so good on you to pass on this skirt.

I was on a short shopping outing recently, with a replacement blush winter scarf somewhere in the back of my mind, when I stumbled upon this mauve beauty. Weird to be buying a warm blanket scarf in the height of summer, but knowing I can never find what I need when looking for it, I snapped it up. I’m finding the color delicious, and as I have a neutral heavy wardrobe (with two grey winter coats!) I’m pretty sure this one will be almost as versatile as my blush one that’s falling apart.

Then I ordered a pleated midi skirt online (I know, after commiserating with Bijou about the trouble with pleated skirts for pear shapes). I kind of loved the print with the slimming diagonals and thought it was navy based, which works beautifully with my color palette. When it arrived, it turned out to be a shade of purple instead. I kind of loved it even more then. (As a sidebar: the elasticated middle is unfortunately uncomfortably tight and the next size up is sold out already, so I’m afraid I’ll have to let this one pass *sobbing vehemently*).

All of this is leading me to conclude that perhaps purple, and then especially this warmer shade of mauve, is having a bit of a moment for fall-winter?

I would sure love that, because it’s a shade that really speaks to me. Two or three years ago I got a silk blouse in a warm shade of violet that’s still in good condition as it was in storage during baby years … I could get that one out too and start a small mauve complement. Yet often I’m hesitant to wear purple, especially with my dark fw-palette because it can give off a bit of a witch vibe …

Have you seen dusty purple/mauve in stores? Have you collected any on your inspiration boards? Would you wear it? And if so, any tips for not being burnt at the stake?
