I think if you know you're not comfortable with your body (where you are) and that you want to be (where you want to go), the next step is to figure out *why* you're where you are and also why you want to go where you do. The *how* flows from the why.

Laura expressed exactly what I was going to say. I weigh what I did 4 months ago, but I have since been lifting weights, running regularly, and just started training for a multi sport race. I'm sure I don't look much different. But boy do I feel twice as good about myself, inside and out. Not to say you have to adopt a hard core exercise routine to feel better, but as Laura said, be more in tune with your body and the wonderful things it can do. It will go a long way in making you feel better.

On the non clothing, non presentation to the world side of things, I always feel better about my body when I use it and pay attention to it - not how it looks but how it feels. Do yoga, take a walk, even just notice how your body takes you throughout your day. Spend some time using your body functionally, maybe get a massage, whatever helps you get back into your body mentally. How my body looks is only one part of the whole picture, to me. It's also where I 'live' and that relationship, if that's the right word, is far more complex than what anyone else can see from the outside.

I agree with what the ladies said above, and would also like to add that the old saying "fake it until you make it" can actually go a long way here. Try to stop dwelling on perceived imperfections and carry yourself with confidence, even if it doesn't feel genuine at first. It'll start to become that way

Whatever body you have, it is YOUR wonderful body and you should show it love and admiration by wearing things that are truly comfortable and make you feel happy. That could be color, pattern (or both), the style and cuts you wear, etc. If you are on a journey to change your body in some way (rather it's losing weight, gaining weight, dealing with a recent surgery or handicap, etc.) then it is even more important to show yourself love and respect as much as possible by wearing things that really FEEL good. For me, I love softness in fabrics and can't stand anything that feels binding or rough (scratchy, etc.). But for some, they find comfort in a more fitted garment or more structure. Either way is great as long as it feels good to you.

Because you asked the question, I know you are already taking steps to treat yourself kindly - so I think you are already on your way to becoming more comfortable.

Hmm. This is a tough question to answer, since I don't know you at all. But here are some things that might help. You have to find a way to convince yourself that how you look is not, in the grand scheme of things, all that important. If you can't do this on your own, then counselling will help. Happiness is much more intimately connected to the relationships you build and to the things you can do than it is to the way your face and body look. What are you good at? What are you learning? Whom do you love? Who makes you laugh? These things are tickets to happiness. You have to have things to look forward to.

Since this is a fashion website, it's worth noting that learning to dress your body in a flattering way is useful, too. Angie and everyone here can assist with that.

Also, there are all kinds of websites that talk a lot about body acceptance (have you tried Already Pretty, for example?).

Getting a bit of exercise and enough sleep can't hurt, either.

There is always something you like about yourself that you can try to emphasize. Paradoxically, acceptance is the first step toward change.

What helped me a lot was a book called The Triumph of Individual Style. Different body types are represented with artwork from the master painters. It made me realize that my body shape was beautiful, since it appears in paintings. Also, there was a quote from a painter (can't remember who) basically saying that a perfectly proportioned body was boring. A body that has unique characteristics is much more interesting to a painter!

I also found that knowing what types of clothes look good on my body (e.g., fitted vs. boxy; straight skirt vs. A-line) made a huge difference as well. Angie is always saying that it's not your body, it's the clothes. You just have to keep trying things on until you find stuff that fits.
