<p>I think it’s not terrible, but it’s like a dress you wear when you feel kind of tired and you don’t want anyone to notice you at all. A “fly under the radar” dress. The white scarf is nice next to your face.

Also I wanted to say that I read something that reminded me of you today, It is from <i>Emily Climbs</i> by L M Montgomery. Talking about the flowers at length, she ends; "And what a name <i>columbine</i> is poetry itself"<br /></div></p>

<p>Think it is rather a summer dress. If you love this style you could make this color work when showing some skin on your legs and arms matching it with&nbsp; some cream, white and TURQUOISEor CORAL(last 2 are my fave pairing with this neutral) big chunky accessories, like sandals in these colors, a clutch, a big low pendant, or bangles.

<p><div><b>3style</b> - yes I know what you mean. And when one has a mental association with a style it can be hard to detach it. My mother, for instance, used to associate the opaque black stockings I favoured as a teenager with those the "convent schoolgirls" of her teen years <i>had</i> to wear, and wasn't too keen on them.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Gigi</b> (sorry, my autocorrect changed your name above to "high") yes it is probably a bit different from my normal style.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>RunCarla</b> - over white skinnies is an interesting suggestion. And helpful, as I'm beginning to think that this dress may actually be too short for me to comfortably wear it without something underneath. That'd probably make it more a spring/ autumn than summer look in my climate, especially if I am also adding a colourful scarf.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Smittie</b> and <b>Thistle</b> - thanks<br /></div></p>

<p>The color is not something I normally see you wear, but its neutral enough you could wear almost any scarf to brighten it.</p>
<p>Fushia would be amazing with it, as your friend said.</p>
<p>I'd also try it again in summer, see how you like it wearing it in its season.

I think it’s so hard to judge colours through these pics, but I agree with your friend to wear it with fuchsia.

<p>What Suz said. My opinion is that this is a summer dress that doesn't really translate for winter. I could see it worn in a minimalistic way on a hot summer day with a gladiator sandal and co-ordinating bag! Or worn over white skinnies. If that isn't your style, pass it along.

<p>I really like the cut of this dress on you (a type of shift), but I don't care for this rendition on you. The fabric is very coarse, and the overall look is almost grunge. I think of your style as being a little more polished.

<p>Anne, where I live there are certain cliques of women over forty who go to every cultural event dressed in a sack dress with big earrings and necklace and chunky high heels and some sort of elaborate kimono on top. Plus arty handbag. Sort of a Chico’s and EF hybrid, except all of the jewelry has to be one of a kind. It’s all about having as much interesting stuff as possible hanging off your body, like as if you were a window display mannequin. It’s not at all about actually dressing JFE and trying new ideas.

<p><div><b>Jenni</b>, I'm pretty flexible on flattery when it comes to style, but less so with colour.</div><div>I forgot to mention that I asked a friend about it yesterday who has a very keen eye for colour flattery. I didn't wear it but I held it up to my face and she said it immediately "deadened" it. She said it was a cute style and I could wear it with hot pink underneath.</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>

<p><div><b>Toban</b> &amp; <b>Becky </b>- thanks for your honest insight. You are right -&nbsp; I do have&nbsp; other better dresses. I don't <i>need </i>this one that landed in my lap. Just trying to work out how I deal with my attraction to the style!</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Staysfit</b> - No worries about saying that at all! And artists' smocks and peasants smocks are pretty similar, which is perhaps what <b>Rachy</b> was thinking of when she said it looked rustic. I also thought it looked a bit like an orphanage pinafore/apron! (which has a certain appeal to it). My work is in the professional services area though, so though I think this outfit was fine for casual Fri, it's not farming/ artistic/orphanage or even dirty.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Barbara Diane</b> and <b>Bj-</b> yes the scarf does obscure some of the details around neckline</div><div><br /></div><div><b>3style</b> - interesting your comment about the style being handy on car trips etc. I had a tunic top with some similarities (similar length, yoke, short puffed sleeves and cocoon shape) to this a few year ago, but it was made in t-shirt fabric, and it was my absolute go to for car trips! I wore that top out.</div><div>Interesting your comment about "nosy and pretentious" ladies. I suspect the giver bought it at a consignment&nbsp; shop or bargain rack in an upper/ middle area so could be something in that. Not sure what you mean about making this type of dress into a fancy dress though.<br /></div><div><br /></div></p>

<p>As I was mentioning on a recent thread started by Sterling (on her deciding to forego a pink Eileen Fisher dress) I absolutely love this kind of dress for long car trips or airplane rides, anything where you are stuck wearing a seatbelt for hours. Or for walking around on a hot day, I like belting it low and casual like a medieval men’s tunic. </p>
<p>I’m not crazy about trying to make this type of dress into a fancy dress. Honestly, I associate dressing it up fancy with pretentious and nosy ladies. Probably it’s because I’ve always had a rotten time trying to buy Eileen Fisher. Not the fault of the dress, I quite like the style, just my personal experience.

<p>I like it best with the boots and without the scarf. Not sure if it is the bright whiteness of the scarf compared to the dress color or the fact that I like the definition seeing the neckline adds. So, not sure if a different scarf, a necklace, or without additional adornment is my preference.<br />
I also like the additional bit of visual weight the boots add.<br />
And I would certainly try it also in warmer weather.

<p>Please don’t take this the wrong way, but this somehow reminds me of an artists smock. I think you should be holding a painters palette and paintbrushes! I think the garment design has historical origins as protective clothing in a work environment, and therefore it may be very appropriate for a work setting —-depending on your job of course.</p>

Not on me - olive is terrible on my skin (lovely on many other people though) I think your other suggestion is a possibility if I can't get it to work.</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Kathie</b>, no blush (I find it hard to get&nbsp; a blush to work with my skin, though I love the look in theory) but I have pink scarves that would work well for a pop of colour and I can definitely take up your and Suz's suggestions to wait for warmer - except, happily, I don't have to wait for summer, as I'll be going on a trip to a tropical part of Australia fairly soon! I'll keep you posted.</div><div><br /></div><div>By the way DH has now seen it and reckons the colour is ok but the dress is too loose at the bust (not sure that's true - I could fill it out more but that is par for the course for me).</div><div><br /></div><div>The lady who gave this to me is a apple/ pear combo&nbsp; with slim legs.and very keen on sack and cocoon dresses. Also somewhat older than me.Just for info. I can see why it appealed to her.<br /></div></p>

<p>I agree with the idea to keep until summer and try it then as it was designed to be worn. It has potential.&nbsp;

<p>I like the color on you, and the styling over a column of black works well for winter use. Do you have any other scarves you might try with it? Perhaps a blush? I’d keep it at least until summer, and try styling it for different weather before making a final decision.

<p>I think the colour is actually quite good on you- but the whole thing actually too dull. Now if it were olive not grey... I would like it a whole lot better. For me, I don't think I would keep.

<p>Yes it is. I think the colour is good on you- but if your bored you could try some statement jewelry. The light scarf is nice.

<p><b>Joy</b>&nbsp; - You mean that men don't like figure obscuring?&nbsp; &nbsp;Probably right in general. I haven't asked DH about this one, but he does generally go for conventional flattery, though he sometimes surprises me </p>
<p>As to how I feel - not certain. I do like this shape actually (although I often like waisted styles, I don't <i>only </i>like them) but I am really unclear on the colour. I feel that white around my neck helps, because the false plain does look pretty murky and I don't do "murk" well, thanks to my olive complexion'</p>
</p>
<p><b>Sal, Like the Season, Jussie</b>&nbsp;- thanks. Jussie this is right up your alley right?</p>
