lisap, I know you've done the work. I'd just be standing there telling you to trust your gut. I'd do it though. :P

JenniNZ, I stress about getting rid of things in the best way possible, but not about getting rid of them at all. When my mom died, my brother's partner was watching us go through her stuff and commented on two things. 1. He asked if we were sentimental about ANYTHING, because we were pretty ruthless, and 2. he said, "You know, most people would just throw this stuff away instead of calling nursing homes and running across town to food banks." It's a weird combination of minimalism and frugality.

Style Fan, I ordered fabric samples from Only Child before putting in my clothing order, and the raw silk is soooooo nice. I can't wait to wear it.

notsaf, you may have figured it out with the skirts. I think I've only put on tights once since moving here.

cindysmith, I follow professional organizers on instagram just for the neat closets and pantries.

Janet, yes! Being able to see and get to everything makes a huge difference.

Runcarla, that makes total sense!

Suz, I have thought about putting some things in deeper storage, but I have room in my closet, and I don't really want to have to go digging in the attic for a trip to the mountains. I do have some cedar-lined sweater bags (on a shelf above what's pictured in #1) where my wool and cashmere goes in the summertime.

Angie, you are too kind!

So true about it being easier to mix and match tops with skirts and higher waist pants. A nice thing.

You are so organized and thoughtful about this -- it all looks wonderful! I think a holding zone is a great idea for now. I looked at your snow boots and wondered if they and other warmer things could go in a sort of permanent hold zone for trips to colder climates. I'm keeping things like my parka, which I barely ever need in Vancouver -- but now that I am in Kingston this week, I am SO grateful for!

@Jenn - the answer to ‘why 8 months’ is contained in your response to suntiger! I retired at the end of March and did a mini edit (the obvious work clothes I knew I’d NEVER wear again) but I’ve adopted an annual tradition of a complete closet review for DH and myself around our birthdays (October and November). The academic year and fall feels much more the ‘new year’ to me, and I usually start my sartorial soul searching in September (so I’m always ready for the January word, colour, and goal threads! :-D). After a rollercoaster 2017, and without the distraction of a job, I could really focus on who, what, and how I wanted to be going forward - which resulted in letting go of a lot in the 2018 purge. 2019 was modest by comparison - mostly worn out items.

You might be ready by your birthday, since you will have been settled as it were, for the better part of the year and have established your routines. With such a modest collection of clothes, you may still experience churn due to identifying different needs. It doesn’t sound like you need a wool skirt, but you might need lighter coloured loose trousers or a skort?

Brava Jenn. I'm loving your closets: all that space between your hangers and in your shelves makes my heart happy.

Fingers crossed that you love your new OC and ES pieces. They look great for your style and lifestyle, sand I'll be interested to see how you use the wrap belt.

I only do shorter skirts with black tights and only do longer skirts with sheet legs: that feels most balanced to me. Maybe that's a factor?

It’s awesome! The 3 items on their way look so beautiful.
Thinking and analysis? Ha! I spend WAY too much time on that! Every day?
Feeling lighter when you let something go perhaps encourages a smaller wardrobe. I am the opposite, I sometimes worry when I let something go that I will miss it later. That used to happen in my old house when out-of- season stuff was tucked away in bags and one bag might be later to come out- I would think “ now where is that red top with the bling?- surely I didn’t get rid of that?”!

Thank you all for reading through all that!

Cardiff Girl, I don't know if I've ever genuinely regretted getting rid of something. I always feel lighter when things go out the door, even sentimental ones.

Sal, I'm actually thinking about reducing my gear capsule even more. At the old place, I went to the gym most days of the week, but here my exercise tends to come more from urban walking or yoga up on the roof, so I'm just not needing/using the dedicated gym wear.

April, Sisi and JAileen, thank you! You are all very kind.

lisaP, wouldn't that be fun?!

Angie and rachylou, I think it has to do with the specific skirts. I'm wearing the two below, along with another easy jersey faux wrap in black. The ones that are languishing are less casual--one is wool, another is lace--or shorter, or both. At least I'm enjoying that, with higher rises, it's easier to mix and match tops between pants and skirts!

Also Angie, thank you for the kind words. They mean a lot.

Runcarla, you know, I'm sure we've talked about it before, but I'm so interested in the life changes that cause churn. Moving has been huge for me--the last big turnover I had was when we moved from Washington to Colorado--but I know things like weight loss/gain, career changes, retirement, having children, etc. all cause similar strife. I wonder how possible it is to move slow and steadily through those changes. I'm curious, what was it about the 8-month mark for you? Do you know?

Joy, so far, our atypical weather has been hotter, rather than colder. I was glad to have a chance to go back to Colorado over Thanksgiving during a brutal cold snap. That really underscored just much is (and isn't) necessary for those trips. I was definitely glad I'd kept my snow boots!

shevia, I would LOVE to see the inside of your closet!

LeDonna, I like wearing mine (the ones I do wear) with graphic tees too. In fact, I much prefer a tee with a skirt to one with jeans.

nemosmom, I'm glad someone else appreciates the numbers. I find it really valuable to see how my wardrobe is growing and shrinking over time, but I know it can be kind of dense and boring to look at someone else's sea of numbers!

suntiger, my birthday is in August. I associate it with new clothes and back to school shopping, so it just makes sense to me to plan for fall in August and, by extension, for spring in February. Alas, I don't think the weather is to blame for not reaching for the skirts. We've been having lovely temps in the 70s for a month and less-lovely highs in the 80s this week.

Thank you so much for taking time to share your numbers with us! I find them so interesting and helpful as I look at my own items. I echo what Carla said about keeping items in your holding zone a bit longer than usual - I experienced a lot of churn when we left California for the Midwest and wish I would have taken it slower. I only started tracking wears and churn *after* the fact, so I am sure you will tackle your additions and churn far better than I did.

Jenn, you are such an inspiration. This is a good time to use a holding zone, until you have your new climate figured out. Don’t forget about out-of-your-season travel capsules and those times when you get untypical weather. Layers.

Thank you for posting. I look forward to your monthly summary and numbers crunching. The closet shots show a lovely colour story. Do consider keeping holding zone items for a bit longer in consideration of the upheaval of the relocation. Your tracking will inform your decisions, and I imagine after a calendar year - you can do an informed edit.

I was not organized when we relocated in 2014, and as a result experienced a lot of churn. I handled retirement better and with less churn - but did experience a purge at 8 months.

The skirts are an interesting question. There’s heat but also sun. I don’t know about you, but I look for more coverage against the sun even tho it’s hot...

Beautiful wardrobe, beautiful style, beautiful organization, beautiful discipline, beautiful focus, and beautifully written!

Sooooo, not in a skirt mood, Jenn? It can go that way .... :)

I love the way you thoughtfully add and subtract from your wardrobe, do the analysis - but LISTEN to your feelings and honour your emotions. Don't let any of it boss you around. Remain affected by what is important, and ignore what is trivial. And don't get your knickers in a knot.

*APPLAUSE"

You have this down, and are doing splendidly as you tweak your wardrobe for a new climate. ROCK ON.

You continue to be one of my style icons - and I admire the way you are slowly tweaking your closet to suit your goals and lifestyle.

Whilst we have a similar number of jackets, shoes and tops (I have 11 coats and jackets,15 shoes and 29 tops of all descriptions) I have a lot more pants/shorts and dresses - and a lot more gear too.

March will be fun to add sandals and get your slow shopping items.

Your wardrobe is very cohesive - and peaceful looking. I particularly admire your shoe and boot collection!!

A very thoughtful closet analysis and I think that you are wise to have a holding zone given that you are still working out what works in your new climate. There is nothing worse than giving something away then wishing you hadn’t .Your closet looks very neat indeed.l look forward to seeing the new purchases when they arrrive.

Close enough to the end of the month to do some thinking and analysis. February is halfway through my August-July "fashion year," so I usually do a wardrobe review and start planning for warm weather this time of year. Here's what's been on my mind.

1. The super slow shop - Between January and February, I ordered three new wardrobe items--a linen dress, a raw silk top, and a wide, silk, wrap belt. I haven't received any of them yet. I expect my new slow fashion items (in Finds) to arrive in early March. I'll also likely add at least one pair of sandals in March. Next month is going to be fun!

2. Skirts - I thought I had skirts figured out, but nope. Most of mine have been sitting unworn for the past six months, despite plenty of lovely skirt weather. I've shuffled a few to the holding zone to see how I feel without them, and more may go shortly. I do have three skirts that I wear regularly. All are longer midi length.

4. Holding Zone - I have a more robust holding zone than I've had in the past. I'm feeling less certain about what should and shouldn't go as I navigate through my first year in a more mild climate, and I like the idea of using a holding zone to experiment with how it feels to live without certain pieces. There are six items in the holding zone right now, and I just passed on another six with my February wardrobe review.

5. Geeking out. If you don't want to know/don't care about the numbers, skip down for closet pics. I like to take inventory and write down my numbers in August and February for reference later, but I didn't do it in August, because I was in the middle of moving. The most recent numbers I have are from last February. My wardrobe is currently at 101 items, down 9 from a year ago.

For my own reference and any other numbers geeks out there, here's the breakdown:

5 dresses (down 4 - counting the jumpsuit as a dress)

4 outerwear (up 1 - I got rid of my parka, but reclassified some light jackets as outerwear because of my change in climate)

10 toppers (down 4 - 7 cardigans, 1 kimono, 1 poncho, 1 blazer)

4 pants (up 1 - 2 jeans, 2 other)

8 skirts (up 1)

13 shoes (up 2 - 1 sandals, 3 sneakers, 6 boots/booties, 2 flats, 1 heels)

24 tops (unchanged - 7 graphic tees, 6 long-sleeved shirts and blouses, 3 pullover sweaters, 6 sleeveless tops)

20 accessories (down 1 - 10 scarves, 3 hats, 1 belt, 6 bags)

13 gear (down 3)

Total Main Wardrobe = 88 items (was 94)
With Gear = 101 items (was 110)

More than 25 wears: 56 (was 47)
5-24 wears: 40 (was 57)
Less than 5 wears: 5 (was 6)

6. And finally...closet photos. My new closet space is smaller than my old one, but I think I finally have it figured out. This is almost everything, barring what I'm currently wearing and a couple pieces in the laundry.

1. Tops, toppers, and dresses

2. Tall boots

3. Basics and tees in top drawer, gear and sleepwear below

4. Scarves

5. Shoes, Pants, plus the baskets for scarves and bras

6. Skirts (and that bag is the holding zone)
