Ditto what Anne and LisaP said. I'm not officially on a fast but I didn't shop in January and won't in February. Around mid-March I will start looking at spring items, but not before then. The only thing that tempts me, in fact, is a gear-type rain jacket -- I might begin a slow hunt for one of those as I need to replace my wearing-out one before I do some spring travelling.

I'm still abstaining. I"m still in stores all the time (work) and am seeing new things, but nothing is tempting me at all right now. It's that funny time of year when there is still a good month of winter left, and you can't wear spring things yet. Having new things sitting around unworn tends to spell "mistake" for me. I'm using the time to do a closet clean-out (this past weekend) and sifting through winter clothes that still haven't been worn . Weaning out the unnecessary pieces is giving me great pleasure for the time being

I'm 21 days in, not a struggle so far. It's really just become a month of shopping as little as possible. Apparently I'm an all-or-nothing type. It's nice to see the credit card stay at $0. I've bought a couple small things for the house -- some handmade washcloths, and a honey jar made by a local potter (since we've been buying honey in giant bulk containers that are a pain to open and close).

I've done a bit of warm-weather shopping for my husband (new sandals, shorts, and two t-shirts), and replaced some of my son's outgrown clothing with the next size up (pants, hoodies, and socks).

I did have to buy a couple things for myself -- make-up and props for a play I was in -- but the theatre reimbursed me for those. ;)

I have done a fair amount of browsing, and I've come up with a pretty cohesive (I think) list for spring/summer. It's a longer-than-I'd-like wishlist, so I'll have to spend some more time breaking it down into "wants" vs "needs". I think my main needs are: an excellent non-gear sunhat, some lightweight linen pants and tops, a summer-weight casual dress, and new sandals. Everything else is a want, and I'll have to decide which of them will provide the biggest style boost.

I'm still in, but reframing it as a diet rather than a fast. I'd like to try to avoid too many new acquisitions this year until I've figured out where I want to go next and gotten rid of some stuff. It's becoming clearer though.

I'm thinking come summer there will be a pair of prescription sunnies and probably a new handbag.

Ugh--catalogs, coupons, special sale notices are arriving in my email and mailbox. It would be better if I didn't look at them at all and concentrate on other activities. I tossed those BR card specials in the trash just this morning. I don't have a plan for spring yet, so I don't want to do random buys.

I planned to be on the shopping fast for February and will participate. I wanted to start early but really needed some warm gear items for a trip, things that were not in my closet so that I couldn't shop it. I resisted buying much more than I bought but got waterproof hiking boots, 3 pair of wool boot socks, a warm hat and a couple of scarves, About half my purchases came from thrift/consignment stores. For February i give myself permission to buy a perfect HEWI if it appears, but my list is very short and I'm picky so it is unlikely.
My existing wardrobe needs some attention with depilling sweaters, polishing footwear, hand washing fine woolens, editing the worn out, etc. I could also do some capsule work and make plans for the coming warmer seasons.
Good luck to all participants.

All the best everyone with your Febfasts.

I not formally "not buying clothes" but I didn't buy any in January and probably won't in February. I bought 5 items for summer (it's summer here) before Christmas so just need to wear them - that's a lot for me and I don't feel that I have worn them that much. I haven't worn my white shorts at all yet. Hopefully this abundance will prevent end of summer sale bad purchases, which I have made a few of in the past (it is easy to want a little refresher, since our summer weather extends to mid April, and the sales seem to lead me to worse items)

However, my 5 items only included one, sleeveless top, and I'm feeling like a fitted short sleeve, tee able to work with skirts, would be a helpful addition with the new looks. I haven't bought one for at least 5 years so I wouldn't rule that out.

My teenage daughter is unlike me in that she loves shopping and going to the mall etc, so if I end up taking her to spend her Christmas money, that could give me a chance to find the tee. Unlike many mothers on YLF I do not cherish these expeditions and am often secretly wondering if I could outsource them to another relative! But spending time with your child doing what they want is a good thing right!

I pretty much abstained from wardrobe spending in January and haven't been feeling the shopping bug much, but today was the first day since Saturday that I felt capable of leaving the house (stomach flu got me), and while waiting to pick up my husband on an errand, I wandered into Anthro and a local boutique. Nothing much jumped out at me except for some ankle lace-up coated jeans in Anthro. I didn't have time to try them on, but they're on my radar now. Not that I need them, but I like the style and that brand (Pilcro) often fits me really well. Well, we shall see if I feel the pull strong enough to go back and try them on.

I have discovered since reorganizing my closet that I am sadly lacking any knit winter tops in my favorite teal colors. That is a bit of a hole I would like to fill. So if I shop, that will be a target goal. However, the stores seem to be in spring mode already, and none of the spring stuff appeals to me at all.

So even though I am not on a shopping fast, I am still dedicated to "slowing my roll." If I continue the year buying only two items a month, I will be way, WAY more restrained than I have ever been.

I began my fast in mid-January when someone suggested starting early, BUT I bought seven(!) bottles of nail polish and a lippie as a result of Carter's link to a Zoya special. At $3.75/each I couldn't resist. Do they count? I'm thrilled with the two I've tried so far, and the $30 I spent for the haul will probably spark more joy than a single item of clothing of the same amount.

I confess that I am still checking the Nordies web site and my Nordies Wish List, but I opted to pass on a Wish List item that was just marked down 40%. And just now I deleted it so I won't be tempted if it gets marked down more.

Believe it or not, at the age of almost 64 I am still trying to figure out what I really love to wear and WHY so that I know when it might make sense to pay full price.

I'm supposed to be on a fast until spring but I bought a ski jacket in January. I bought it on the cheap so I'm going to say it doesn't count :-)

I'm actually happy to have it and it has lots of nice features. It is "Lole" a Canadian brand.

Whenever I buy gear, I'm always so happy to have it *after* I buy it but really don't enjoy shopping for it.

What I have been doing is sewing - using up the fabric and patterns I already own - so I guess you could say I'm getting new clothes without having to buy anything!

I also do not plan to shop for clothes in February. I had a light January, just a pair of Vionic house slippers, which are good for my ailing feet, and also some new bras & panties, which I needed.

I tend to buy early spring clothes in February and later regret it when I find out what becomes available. A brief trip through the mall over the weekend left me feeling secure that I won't miss anything. Looks like some 60's sort of Mod and some hippie stuff. I won't miss that. I look forward to Angie's analysis.

This will be a good time to reflect over what works now vs. what worked in past years. I do plan on refreshing my makeup once I figure out what my new look will be.

The upside is that this will force me to get creative with the things I already own, repair the things that need repairs, and etc.

It will also free up cash to use towards the materials for building our house.

it doesn't count against me if I ask DH to order me something from Babooshka for my birthday in march since she is gong out of business and I don't want to miss out, does it?

Great idea La Pedestrienne,

I am not on an official fast but do not plan to shop in February. It is our hottest month and a busy month for me. Summer sales are picked over and winter stock is arriving, but I do not feel tempted. I will do so wardrobe planning for autumn and winter as I do have some wardrobe holes to fill.

In January I added a pair of sunglasses, a pair of workout leggings and a long sleeve gym top. In very late December I added two pairs of shorts (unplanned but I am enjoying them and wearing them both frequently).

Is anyone else starting a shopping/spending break today? I know some folks have been at it for a while now, but I'm sticking with my original plan for a month-long February break. I've started by closing all the clothing/accessories browser windows on my phone and computer. I've also got a box of clothes ready to take to thrift/consignment -- hope to do that between now and the weekend.

I purchased quite a lot in January -- 13 items total, mostly essentials and basics, nothing that feels frivolous, but nonetheless a spendy month. 7 (!) items from Boden -- to build a work/job interview capsule, 4 items thrift/consignment, 1 locally made item, and 1 pair of shoes from an "ethical"/artisan company (Nisolo). Looking forward to making use of and enjoying these new additions in the weeks ahead.
