Love your update, TG! You gained something valuable, even if it was simply confirming what your instinct already knew!! I hear you on daydreaming about what you would LIKE to buy, even if you don’t pull the trigger in a purchase. Sometimes the shop is more satisfying than the purchase.

Rachy, "I appreciate more styles than I really want to wear" - yes, 100% this!

I totally get your Dad ... DH and I love daydreaming about all the home improvements, etc we would do ... But when push comes to shove, we love our home, and frankly the opportunity cost of implementing some of our ideas isn't worth it. Would it look amazing? Yes. Do we want to miss six weekends of chilling with out kids while they still want to spend time with us working on it? Nope. In the end the really valuable stuff finds its way to being done. Same with your dad's garden? Same with clothes maybe?

It’s all very interesting. I like wearing the same things over and over for a few weeks and then changing them for a new set of things to wear over and over. It may be weather related more than anything. Maybe I’d be happy for longer if the weather were consistent for longer. I don’t know.

Re. Daydreaming being as satisfying as buying... I have honestly found that to be true. In many ways more so, because I appreciate more styles than I really want to wear. I’m afraid tho of becoming my dad: he was like this about his garden, which was a few scrawny trees but he’d be out there watering them imagining something to rival the botanical garden. And by this I mean, I may never actually paint my sitting room or find someone to sew me the slipcover I want for my sofa.

Carla, I was thinking of building a colour compliment, but I really like your insight - I have this shadow persona that loves to be bold and bright! I need a bold and bright capsule hehe :)

Jenn, yes - not a ton, but an example - Angie's accessory post, I started 'shopping' for all the fun accessories I would get. Then I actually saw one of the items (a pair of blue resin earrings) at a store for super-reasonable and thought, meh, I'm good, I had my fun already! That's not to say I might not get them at some point, but the pretend shopping didn't translate into real shopping.

On the other hand, there are the odd bits I really do want to get (like the top I mentioned above).

Part of the fun (for me) is in the planning and speculating, but maybe I'm getting better (I hope???) at differentiating that from what I will actually enjoy wearing.

The "column of dark neutral with accessories" formula works for me too. I think I'm actually less likely to get bored with swapping out accessories over the same all-neutral outfit than I would be with cycling through several printed pieces.

I'm interested in your observation re: daydreaming about fun pieces. Did you keep browsing and looking at catalogs during the 30x30?

I like the idea of your red sweater. You might need a mini-capsule of brights like I have a mini capsule of Boho. Most of the time you’ve got a formula that works - but every now and then you want to do something different. It’s worth recognizing that, and carving out a little space for that tiny little shadow persona.

Angie, I didn't really track # of wears, but I would say my black tops saw the most wears relative to other items (not the wrap one for some reason - probably just not as practical for day to day). My jean were probably an even split between the three pairs. My black puffer and Blondos or Hunters and oyster white toque were certainly the most worn, due to the weather!

I definitely love a column of a dark neutral, accessorized with a few pieces of jewellery - not surprisingly! (dark + white/light when the weather is hot). It just feels so neat and simple, which is my happy place. As the weather warmed, I did feel the urge towards navy vs. black, which makes sense - in general I enjoy mixing the two, as you know!

Although my red sweater only got one wear, I truly enjoyed that one wear - showing that even if I should limit colour, I certainly shouldn't remove it altogether. It serves it's very happy purpose!

Sooooo glad you don't stress about repeating outfits. Where is the fun in that stress ? :)

Which items did you wear a lot? Mood and weather play HUGE roles in those decisions, don't they.

Great stuff! I found it really interesting that you found daydreaming about clothing as satisfying as buying.l think that I can really relate to this, browsing and outfit creation with my online wish list quite often satisfy my shopping urges.l also wondered if one could create a 30/30 for each month of the year. That would be an interesting exercise.

I'm not sure that I learned much here - only re-confirmed things that I knew already, such as that I am happy with neutrals and limited choices, and that I need a pop of colour, but only in the smallest of quantities.

This is such a great result! I'm often more satisfied when I have fewer pieces in rotation just because it makes dressing such a no brainer. I've never done 30x30, but I've started to be pretty careful about micro-seasonal rotations, which might effectively been very similar. Happy *wearing*!

I think I'll do a closet organization and put away some true winter pieces I'm sick of , and pull together a small capsule just like you've done ......something to get me focused on pieces that haven't been getting much wear (anything navy and olive or red ). I'm chuckling at the one nice day you had to wear your new BR piece - I did the same thing here last week. We had a couple of days at 0C and you'd think summer had busted out

Hi all, at the beginning of February I posted that I would do a 30x30 challenge - choose 30 items and wear only those for the month. As I mentioned in the original post:

The purpose of this challenge is fun and curiosity. I am not going to be fraught if I have a hankering for something not on the list - I'll just take note of it and move along. On the other hand, I'm not going to stress about repeating outfits; in fact, I'm curious to see if I get through all 30 pieces!

Carla mentioned the concept of creative limitation, and I feel that was a good term to summarize the intent of the exercise. Here's what I learned:

30 items is more than enough for a month (ok slightly shorter than a month) - even with the limited number, I only wore 27/30 items.

Unworn items: my black wrap top, brown BR magic sweater, green balloon-sleeve tee).

A few items were only worn once, such as the white sneaks, navy Zara puffer (both weather related), red crewneck.

I did swap in my red crewneck sweater as there was one day where I just felt like wearing colour. I swapped it for a silky scarf that I never reached for - I am chalking this up to weather. I also swapped in my navy crewneck in place of a light gray crewneck.

I made two purchases in February - the magic BR sweater in black, because I wanted to grab it before it disappears, and the coatigan in beige, which I wore once when the weather decided to be lovely for a day (so that's 28 items worn in total).

I did not feel limited at all, nor am I having much of an urge to change the capsule for March. (this may change if the weather turns more springy towards the end of the month).

TBH, I'm not sure that I learned much here - only re-confirmed things that I knew already, such as that I am happy with neutrals and limited choices, and that I need a pop of colour, but only in the smallest of quantities.

I will say that the exercise curbed my urge to shop and I observed that daydreaming about buying fun pieces was as satisfying as buying them. Meanwhile, the pieces I bought are either a workhorse already (black sweater worn many times already) or are likely to be (coatigan).

It also is just a generally satisfying feeling for me to map out and wear a limited set of pieces (even allowing for the tweaks along the way).

For March, the only piece I really am determined to get is a navy or light blue (not sure which yet) t-shirt in a 'new' shape, such as a fitted scoop or square neck, maybe ribbed and/or a henley style.

Thanks for reading; happy Friday! xx
