Anne, I understand what you mean. I think I just put on my PJs when it is later in the evening and wear those. But I have sometimes thought that it would be great to have a capsule of items especially for at-home evening wear. I guess I have been so busy building the other parts of the wardrobe and putting my money there that I didn't dare to admit this to myself yet! Hmmm.

Anne,

I totally get this! I have so many cashmere sweaters that i will never wear them out if i save them for nonlounge wear. This winter, i made a special effort to wear the cardigans, precisely because they have a bathrobe comfort.

I like cotton or modal jersey dresses against my skin because of soe allergies that i seem to have developed, preferably loose drapey cut--just like your blue tank dress! i even purposefully bought a casual dress with the intention of using as lounge and sleepwear. I layer long sleeve tees and leggings for winter.

You are not alone. If sporty vibe will get you to wear items at home then do so. But don't make an artificial distinction between home and lower end casual out of the house events. You need to be comfortable and stylish in both places!

Rae and Suz, thanks for the wisdom.

Rae - for your "clawed by cats" I'd substitute - kids hands and cooking splashes (though I do wear an apron a lot)

Suz, it was your fascinating thread a while ago that led me to think about loungewear. I think there is a distinction in my mind between what I'd wear at home in the daytime if I had no visitors, and what I feel like wearing after a day at work. (though there is some overlap) In the morning I often put on jeans, for example, and I never feel like wearing them after a day at work. My daytime look are often easily adaptable to going out - I'll change out the footwear andsubstitute a nicer jacket or sweater if I need to go an do the school run.

And I have worked out the type of outfits I like to wear in the evening. Mostly it is from handed down outfits that are in that style, but are not quite the right colour, for instance the top below, which is in a muted colour that isn't great for me, and was handed down 2 years ago.

Oh and I love high necks for homewear too!

I like the ones you linked to as loungewear! They look a bit sporty to me, which would mentally allow me to wear as loungewear. I mainly can't bring myself to wear anything at home around the cats that I wouldn't want to get clawed. If dirt is the factor for you, if it is washable and makes you feel good, you should wear it!

I think my problem is different -- I am trying to dress my loungewear up, in a sense!

What I mean is that before YLF I had taken to wearing my workout wear around the house at all times. That was my "loungewear." And my everything wear, too. I had a few other pieces, sure, that I wore for special events or going out. But not a heck of a lot.

I still spend most of my days at home, (apart from frequent travelling, that is...) but because of this, I decided that I wanted to wear real clothes at home vs. loungewear, at least most of the time. The only thing is, I want my real clothes to feel as comfortable as loungewear or gear. And at the same time, they have to look fashionable, so that if I end up going out, I only have to add a third piece of some accessories to make an outfit. Rather than changing altogether.

Anyway...enough about me!

I love that blue on you; it is just stunning!

As for the fear you won't wear your loungewear if you buy new, the simple solution is to purge the older, less fab stuff. Then you won't have a choice! Really, when things are worn out, they need to go. And you deserve something new then.

Another solution, if you find a sort of jacket thing of this type useful, is to have two of them in rotation, so you won't run into laundry difficulties. It must be washable -- otherwise, forget it. Also, if you think a pattern would be more practical, you can look for that. But I don't see why it inherently would.

It sounds as if you have identified some features that make a piece work for you, though. So why not go with your hunches on this? We all have different needs and priorities and preferences when it comes to this kind of personal wear, and since you don't need to make a fashion statement but simply comfort yourself and make it easy to move around (and get cozy...or cool, depending on the season) it really should be up to you.

For myself, at home (as opposed to out in the world) in winter, I find I wear: soft knit tops (jumpers) not wovens. Sleeves I can push back a bit. High necks or scarves. Pants with either stretch or loosenss. Warm socks.

In summer: more woven tops, long shorts or loose light pants, bare feet.

So, after a year of paying close attention, I can now buy for my work-at-home wardrobe in some confidence that what I purchase will actually work for me. Meanwhile, I have other criteria for the clothes that I wear out in the world. There is obviously some overlap, as that is the whole point of this capsule for me. But there needn't be for everyone.

I like the ruched jacket for around the house. It looks like gear so it would prevent you from "saving" it to wear out and about. My lounge wear all looks like this (but not as nice.) For this capsule, I know I will wear it as long as it can be machine washed and dried. I prefer separates over dresses for around the house too--it just seems more practical. I love the long blue dress--so pretty on you.

Hi Rute, I think I get a comforting feeling from the tie around the patterned jacket - it is like a tie in a dressing gown! And it is made of sweatshirt fabric which helps. But it has had 2 winters, so I am looking at a replacement.
I'd really like to update my loungewear, especially since I now work several days and feel there is more or a gap between work wear and home wear.
I have a couple of things in mind - I don't mean that I'd get these exact items, but something similar

http://www.ezibuy.com.au/search.aspx?q=94142

http://www.ezibuy.com.au/searc.....38;q=94381

Most of my loungewear is handed down items and I am not even going to show you those. The one thing I purpose bought for loungewear a couple of years ago (and also wear over gear to the gym) is this jacket (pictured below). I have indeed worn it a GREAT deal - Almost daily in the cooler months.

The thing is, it is great and patterned and thus hides the dirt. I worry a bit that a brighter, clearer look like the ones above I would end up not wearing, at least as loungewear. That for instance happened with this dress (pic #2) which I bought for around the house, and decided was nice enough to wear out (though only if I am at the lower end of my weight range and having a good tummy day, which could be why it isn't relaxing enough to wear at home anyway!)

Thoughts?
And have any of you got over the "too good for loungewear" conundrum
