Janet, my understanding about the nano particle zinc sunscreen is that it breaks down more quickly so protection does not last as long.

Agree with J’Aileen. A tan is not protective. Here in NZ and Australia we have the highest levels of skin cancer in the world. It is difficult not to burn even when we try to cover up and use sunscreen, because we have a hole in our ozone layer. I notice plenty of fake tan ads in fashion magazines. We are all pretty aware of it but they are also outdoor cultures. So it’s difficult. I have seen people die of skin cancer

Since zinc is an effective sunscreen because it’s opaque, does that mean the zinc sunscreens that don’t make you turn white are ineffective?

Smitty, unfortunately, getting a tan is not a protection.
https://www.scientificamerican.....t-sunburn/

I live in an area where skin cancer removal is a growth industry. I wish I were joking. I’ve had one removed, and my husband has had several removed.

I’ve switched to buying Japanese and French sunscreen from online vendors. I have more confidence that they give protection while making me look human for day to day use.

If I’m doing sports things, I slather neutrogena with lots of zinc and resign myself to looking like a yeti.

Very very interesting. I must say I’m also interested in the environmental impacts of sunscreen chemicals. I really need sunscreen now on my hands. I often get blisters that are hard to heal after only 20 min of exposure. But I’m
also pretty convinced my exposure to all these chemicals is why I’ve developed this ‘sun allergy.’

I find all the regulations and calculations very confusing. Also, I didn’t know that zincs aren’t all equal and the labelling is unclear on what you’re getting.

I think the best course of action is to
A. Get a slight tan, which is protective
B. Wear a hat and cover up.

I stumbled upon this great post about new proposed SPF guidelines for sunscreen and thought many of you would find this interesting. I believe the U.S. needs to make changes so consumers can better identify the UVA protection in what we purchase here. I hope you find this as interesting as I did.
