Such well-informed advice! MaryK already mentioned the awesome GardenWeb. Kind folks there will even help with floor plans on occasion.

The book "Pattern Language" by Christopher Alexander et al. provides an overview of design principles (from city layouts to garden design) in short easy-to-read chapters. He provides a 'language' to help people express the qualities they are looking for in a home. I appreciated his advice that each room should have light from two-sides, and that balconies should be at least 6-feet deep. The book is pricy but should be available at libraries, and some parts are on-line.

http://www.patternlanguage.com.....tterns.htm

Much of Sarah Susanka's "Not So Big" house books are grounded in Alexander's principles.

Thanks Rita - I'll check that one out too! Have you found Houzz? It's pretty amazing. We've found a ton of looks that we like. We created a look book and every time we see something we like we can pop it in there. Then we just shared the look books with the designers. It's not as easy as pinning since its not as simple to go to outside sites to "pin" a look but there are thousands of photos to look through.

Honestly, Christy, I can't recommend enough that you consider finding rooms you like and just copying them! It really cuts down on the decision making! I did it twice and was super happy both times!

But then you knew I was a copycat already...

Thanks MaryK and Deb! Some more great sources of inspiration. It's a little overwhelming thinking about making all of these selections. We've remodeled a kitchen and a master bath (not at the same time) and making just those decisions was tough! Choosing the trim and finish for the entire house seems mind-boggling.

Love the turquoise site MaryK. The office for JDS is exactly the feel I want for my home with soft low contrast colors and hits of sparkle with crystal and mirror.

That is also the wallpaper style I want. I am bookmarking that site.

Are you kidding? No rambling here just lots of great and helpful advice! I love the idea of narrowing it down to a few favorites and making a list of what we each like best. Also great to know what some of the trends are. We has started with one idea of the kitchen and are now leaning towards almost the complete opposite.

I've also been noticing the trend towards wallpapers and, having had too many walls covered with hideous wallpaper that had to come down, I'm very averse to using any, so I'd love to hear/see what you come up with as a paint alternative.

If you think of anything else that would be useful, please let me know. I'm going to look into design shows or showrooms and will take a look at the sites and magazines you've mentioned here. Thank you!!

I am having a house built too but have finished the design stage. We had almost nailed it down when we went to see a few show homes and then redesigned the entire kitchen and added a few feet to the back of the house. :)

I'm not sure if they have a similar event in other cities, but we have a Parade of Homes event twice per year. The home builders association sponsors it and most of the builders enter their new designs in various categories. It is a great way to get ideas since they hire the best local designers/decorators and you can often identify the upcoming trends. I would equate it to watching the fashion runways. I went a number of times and the decorator just happened to be at one of the homes while I was there so we had a great conversation about upcoming trends.

I had seem a trend away from the dark maple floors and kitchens and he confirmed that. He also felt that oak was making a resurgence but in a richer, darker finish. Subtle wallpaper was also used in a number of the higher end homes. It was often a very soft metallic on a neutral base. I loved it and plan to incorporate that trend in my home. I am hoping to figure out how to do it with paint though since removing wallpaper is a nasty business.

I also use BHG.com and the House and home magazine website. They have galleries of pics by room. For us, the kitchen and ensuite were the most important rooms. I went through dozens of magazines and pulled pics of those rooms that appealed to me and then identified the commonalities. Then we narrowed it down to the top five and each made a list of what we loved about them. When we compared lists, we had most of the same features.

The magazines I use the most are Better Homes and Gardens, House and Home, and Style at Home.

Sorry for rambling on and on. This is obviously a subject near and dear to me.

Hi all! As I mentioned in a recent post, we are currently in the process of buying/building a new home. We are super excited about it! We meet with the design team in a couple of weeks and we are still trying to make decisions about the overall look of the house - especially for the kitchen and master bath. Does anyone have any recommendations for where to get home design inspiration? We've already discovered Houzz and of course have been browsing Pinterest for some ideas, so if you have any favorite Houzz designers/lookbooks or Pinterest boards, I'd love to hear about them. And, of course, I'd love to learn about any other design sites that you like.

Appreciate the help!
