Oh, yes--Longchamps bags are beautiful and so intensely classic--I've always wanted one.

Great replies! What do you think is the best sized tote to carry all these things? (dimensions?) I'm afraid I'll buy one and it won't be big enough.

Shiny, can you tell me more about this purse insert....I've heard of it, but never seen one in a store...

I am new to this site and registered just to respond to this post. The pic you posted used to be me at the end of the work day! I work in a conservative corporate environment and leave the house at 7 am and get home at 7:30 pm after yoga. Here's what I carry: all the stuff in my handbag, blazer or cardi, shoes (if it's winter), lunch bag, yoga clothes + flats or casual shoes, files, mug of tea. During the school year I often carry jeans & casual top to change into if I go from work to a kid's game. You get the idea - it was crazy. After months of searching, I think I have it down.

I found a huge but surprisingly light Pulicati leather tote/satchel at TJ Maxx. It's a light tan and very flexible buttery leather and huge.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Pulicati-L.....=72%3A1205|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

Very stylish and appropriate for my work environment (once I was carrying a logo tote issued by a law firm we work with and the HR manager commented that she would have expected to see me carrying something more stylish (!)).

Inside the tote I have a Longchamps smallish white bag (now that it's spring) that has my handbag items and that I can grab and go into a restaurant, etc with. It is nylon so it's light and it also folds up into a tiny square. Here's a link: http://www.magnums.net/prod/LC.....amp_Pliage

So my tote now fits my blazer (rolled up), my yoga stuff, my lunch, any files I may have brought home - and it's not too heavy. I look polished and pulled together. That's my day bag story. :)

Nancy, what about something like this Kenneth Cole bucket bag? Shiny, I bet you'd like these too! I love the hexagonal metal findings on the straps.

I would get yourself a beautiful stylish, ROOMY tote, big enough to carry your work stuff as well as tuck in a small amount of groceries and/or the lunch box. (Consider getting yourself a reusable grocery bag that folds up small, so you always have one on hand). Then, get a small clutch for your essentials to tuck inside that tote. When you go out to lunch at work, or need to hit the bathroom, etc, you just grab the clutch and take that.

Otherwise, since I telecommute, carrying work stuff isn't really an issue for me. My preference in bags is slouchy, hobo style bags in leather, with a single handle, not too big that it overwhelms my frame. Then I use a purse insert to keep all my stuff organized and accessible inside, and to make handbag switching much easier. In all but one of my bags, there is room to throw in a cardi or scarf, umbrella, bottle of water, camera, etc... depending on what I need to add for the day.

Incidentally, regarding the company-issued tote bag? Let your company know it is a security risk to carry a bag with a logo like that. Well, okay... maybe American Greetings doesn't have to worry too much about intellectual property theft... but this is one thing I've had drilled into my head at work. We're forbidden to carry bags that have our logo plastered on it. (We still give them out to customers though!). And to only wear logo'ed polos when at trade shows - never when traveling.

Okay, first off, here is me after I came home from work today:

http://img.photobucket.com/alb.....ags002.jpg

Short of carrying a suitcase, what do you suggest? I have my purse, lunch bag, work bag with stuff I need to do my job, and some groceries I picked up while I was out....

any takers??

p.s. Please excuse the lunch bag, as it was my daughter's..;o).

p.s.s. I really don't like the tote bag my company issued me, but it does fit most of the stuff I need/use for the day

For shopping I have nearly perfected a practical bag solution for myself. I have a fairly large tote (in charcoal grey patent). It big enough to carry a bottle of water, throw a cardi in there (stores are alwats hot!), and also throw small purchases in it so I have less bags to carry. To combat the problem of having to dig through to find stuff I have 2 small zipper bags I sort items into. One has coupons, memberships cards, etc, the other has receipts gum, and random stuff like that.

Nancy, a hand bag preference is very personal. Before we delve into the matter further, make sure you’re not carrying unnecessary items in your day bag. Be ruthless. The less you carry, the better it is for you and your body.

Sling bags are great!

After reading Kari's post on handbags, I have my own question about them: what style do you find is most practical for everyday i.e. shopping?? I'm constantly fumbling around looking for what I need in my bag (obviously the wrong choice for the day) and wonder what do you carry for day to day (not necessarily workday)

Also, what do you think about cross-body bags?

Please pardon if this topic has recently been discussed.

Thanks!
