I think it depends on the fabric and length of top. FWIW, I have a sort of faux wrap midi skirt. I wore it untucked one day and tucked the next, and on the tucked day people took notice and complimented the outfit. And when I asked my bf what he thought of the untucked look, his diplomatic answer was: "easy access."
