I think MsMary and Deborah have clearly demonstrated how leather can be totally appropriate for the work environment!
I wear my leather joggers (pants) to work dressed up with patent pumps, a sleeveless swing top or knit and simple jewellery.
I agree that it is probably wise not to stray too far from a prescribed dress code (if your workplace has one).
I would love to see how your former manager rocked her leather dresses and skirt suits, anonymous!

Aquabee, at the Nordstrom Annual Sale I bought a leather skirt that is knee length and has large pleats, and I would definitely consider that work appropriate. I really think that it has to do with the length of the skirt, how tight it is, and how you style it.

If you're having trouble styling your skirt, feel free to post pictures of different combinations, and we'll help you out.

I just got a leather skirt that isn't a pencil skirt. It's fitted at the waist, but has small gathers and pockets. It looks better with something tucked in, so is trickier than I thought to make it look right. I'm waiting for cooler weather to debut it....

I think it perhaps come down to the fit and and the length of the skirt and of course how you style it. I wear mine to work and feel confident that I look both professional and appropriate. Hmmm might wear it tomorrow:)

It is possible, but I agree with Echo. It is very difficult to do properly. I don't know what industry you or in or what type of position you have (marketing has a different acceptance level than finance where I work).

Still, unless you are absolutely sure, I would leave leather bottoms out of the workplace.

I once worked for a hotel manager who wore leather dresses and leather skirt suits into work and still looked appropriate behind the bar//in the office.

It is a VERY fine line to walk, IMO. First, a person must not be in a very conservative environment because leather will be inappropriate in some workplaces no matter how it is styled, and better safe than turning heads. In less conservative fields, the skirt must not be too shiny, too tight, too short, too bright or even too noticeable. Unless one works in a fashion-forward industry, IMO wearing a leather bottom of any sort (skirt or pants) to work is just too risky. Even if no one says anything, if you caught attention in the wrong way it can affect how and whether you are able to move up in that company. Fashion just isn't worth that, IMO.
