Add me to the LOVE column. I think it is a great color and looks amazing on you. I was wondering if the shedding would decrease so I'm happy that happened, white fuzz is quite annoying. I like the length, makes it feel more fun and oversized. I would make sure the pockets are accessible though.

It doesn’t look too long to me; but I see the width (or pocket?) silhouette you mention. Are you wanting a more a-line fit? You might be able to find it, bit maybe at the expense of accessible (and large) pockets. I’ve regretted buying coats with dainty, shallow pockets that don’t fit my gloved hands…

Agree with holding this one for a bit and taking another look in a week or two.

I love a faux fur because it is lightweight, isn't it! This one has a great cut in my opinion almost a barell and love how you styled it with lighter jeans but strong black accents, that cross body bag especially looks great, I say, KEEP as YLF in this!

Came back to say, I wouldn't shorten or take in -think it looks quite good length and shape, too-and you'll keep moving in it so nobody will stare and measure-but is important to feel fab, and trust our own eyes-and feelings-so maybe trying one size down?

I have about 30 days to return the coat. Thanks to your advices, I will let it stay for a while. I feel I need to step away and try again later to determine if the fit still bother me.
Jonesy, you are right, it is probably pockets.

Missvee, I’m waiting for my tailor to quote me on the price of sleeves shortening first. This is something I will definitely have to do if I keep it.

Another thing - have you checked out the cost of alterations? I had a faux fur coat shortened 2 years ago and it was close to $100Cdn. Plus I had to hunt for a tailor willing to do it because of the thickness of the fabric. And after all this effort, I still haven’t worn it..not even once. Hangs head…

Ah, yes I see your point. Perhaps another way to look at it is to ask yourself which of your clothes are JFE, and whether these are items that you enjoy wearing. If they are, then maybe you just need time to get used to a new silhouette?

I struggle with this shape/style of coat too, and have been looking for the right one for a few years. The line between too-big-all-over and not-oversized-at-all is a very fine one when you’re borderline petite. My take is, if the cut is bothering you now it’s only going to bother you more in the long run. And it’s early enough in the season that other options will most likely turn up. I don’t know the Bay’s return policy; can you keep this one in the closet with tags on for a while so you can do side by side comparisons with other coats?

In looking at the pics again (bearing in mind the fit issues you've just raised) I am thinking the widest part of the coat is where the side-seam pockets are placed? These are going to be lower than hip height for everyone (since they are meant to be able to readily access with hands), so I don't think it looks odd or like the coat is 5" too long on you. The overall length looks really luxurious and fab to me, similar to the Max Mara teddy coat (see pic).

If you lay the coat flat on its back, what does its shape look like? Normally cocoon coats are sort of egg-shaped, so the widest part is an incremental fullness through a large part of the body, rather than a jutting out at the hips (or below the hips, as yours is fitting you), if that makes any sense at all :). So my hunch is that the primary factor in what you're seeing is related to the side-seam pockets, not a bulging out below your hip because of the cocoon shape hitting you too low because of your height.

However...if you are genuinely not happy with the fit and you keep it, if you are anything like me the perceived fit issue will gnaw at you and lessen your enjoyment of the coat.

Well I really liked the style of the coat on you from the start, but if you are not happy with the fit then send it back. Shortening the sleeves and the length will make a difference, but I don’t see how it would affect the overall shape of the coat. The widest part will still be well below your hip won’t it? Maybe I’ve misunderstood your concerns. If so, just ignore me :-)

I love it. It looks so chic on you. I like it with the black bag and boots, too. Add a black or black and off-white cap and/or scarf, to continue the theme.

I'm glad to read that it seems most of the excess fluff has come off.

Have you tried a sit test? I also have issues with width of the garment being too low for me. In my experience when there's folds when the garment is fastened, it will be ludicrous when I sit.

But I've also had success with moving the buttons on a coat. It took care of this issue and was not a discernable alteration.

What about the shortening only the sleeves - not the length of the coat?
The slightly longer coat is something to get used to - could it work with current length?

That's a tough one. Alterations that take an item into a whole other price point are frustrating (this just happened to me with a pair of new sandals I took in to have a thicker rubber sole added - to the tune of $70.00).

Going back to the photos now to look at the length of the coat again...

Thanks, ladies for your support. It means a lot to me!

Update: I took the coat outside and shook it well. I rolled a lint brush over it after and found no fluff on a brush! I wore it with black jeans and had no issues. So, like many said, the fluff was there because the coat is new. So, that is sorted.
I still have doubts about the fit. The oversized style is not a problem for me, I rather like it. The problem with the fit is the shape and the length. It happens often when I buy a regular clothes, the widest (hips) part of the garment is below the wides part of my body by at least 5 inches. This creates folds as it can be seen on the buttoned coat in photos. And the length is also about 5 inches too long. Shortening might help with the shape but it will push the price point much higher since I also have to shorten sleeves, something that I have to do on all my coats. Winter outwear is a real challenge for me.
So, I don’t know - I really like the coat and hate the idea of letting it go. I love the color and texture, it fits my color palette, it’s a good quality brand that I can only afford at the sale price. Is it JFE and my expectations are unattainable giving my petite sizing?

I like it! I don't think it looks overwhelming. It looks intentionally oversized, not sloppy. The only thing that would bother me is the shedding. I once had a puffer that shed feathers, and I looked like I had been in a barn after I took my coat off, lol. But this is different from a puffer, obviously. I think that if you love the coat a lot, you'll find a way to deal with the shedding.

Sloper, the coat was delivered today and haven’t had the time to actually see how bad it sheds. I noticed it on a pair of wool black pants I tried it with. It’s like a kind of fluff that gets on top of black pants if worn with a light color cashmere sweater, I’m going to examine it tomorrow and run a lint brush over it.

LisaP, the coat is from the Bay.
Funny enough, my another order came in today, too. I have ordered a cashmere hat and a wool scarf from Aritzia before I purchased the coat. I have only one! hat, in black and decided on adding one in heather birch (off white) color. Both look great with this coat.
A cream bag has been on my list forever, I’m looking for it, coat or no coat.

I love the look of it! And see what you mean about possibly moving the buttons to make the fit slightly bigger - though I do think it is fine as is.

It works so well with your existing pieces! Light boots and bags would be awesome, but not essential to my eye.

I have no experience with faux fur or cold weather to judge whether it’s appropriate for your climate, and only you can decide about the shedding. But I give a big thumbs up to the look - smashing!

I LOVE IT and I want one ! My own experience with these coats is that the shedding stops . Also - big collar /small head issue actually looks good to my eye - allows you to wear a sleek beanie without feeling like a Yeti. Also - I don’t think one has to have all the complementary pieces in their wardrobe before buying a new coat . I think it’s actually fun to work on over a few seasons . Lastly , I often wear a small bag INSIDE my big faux fur coat . It works surprisingly well . Where did you find this beauty ??

I love it unbuttoned. It looks big to me buttoned and the shedding would bother me… I’m leaning towards keep looking…

More oversized love! I think it looks especially great when open or cinched with the cross body in the pics above. I was looking for a teddy coat in camel last year and ended up with a slightly adjacent boiled wool one from Jcrew in a slightly shorter length. Works for me because I didn't need anything quite so heavy as a true teddy. I think you'll like the bulk when it's dark and cool out! Hopefully the shedding subsides.
