Thanks! That was really helpful. I will take my husband shopping for the deck shoes! Great idea. And I like the idea of longer shorts too.

Gaylene, your boys sound like they're doing a good job! I second everything said there. My husband insists that men's fashion advice should come from other men

Gaylene, your kids are doing an amazing job.I guess being the father of a girl my DH will be having a harder time in a couple of years.

marija I would say the happy medium is in mixing his football t-shirts with maybe some better cut shorts, with footwear that is not something he would wear to the gym.Personally I like shorts in a knee lenght but it depends on the person and it's own tastes.
I guess it is not very diferent than us upgrading our clothes to better fabrics and better cuts.

My husband gets his fashion advice from his two grown sons. His casual wardrobe includes well-fitting jeans and khakis (nothing pleated or baggy), casual shirts (with a couple of well-fitting polos thrown in because he loves them). He wears oxfords, loafers, and short boots with his clothes since both boys insisted that sneakers were only to be worn to the gym. His summer shorts are a tailored, khaki-colored cargo short that comes to just above the knee. He wears them with a canvas deck-style shoe (socks are not permitted).

I think the key elements that the boys have taught their dad is that everything has to fit and accessories like shoes and watches are important to the overall look. They even made him get his jeans hemmed so that the length was exactly right. My husband gets quite a kick out of how seriously both his sons take dressing their father. But, I have to admit, they do a good job; he gets quite a bit of attention from younger woman when he accompanies me to a store.

My husband is a dear! He's a great dad to our six kids. He plays with them, engages them, teaches them! He's awesome! But his fashion sense needs help and I need help, helping him.

He's great at dressing for work. It's the casual attire that needs work. He likes t-shirts with football logos on them, but he's over forty. I don't want him wearing polo shirts everywhere... so what is the happy medium? What is the "right" length for men's shorts? And what fabrics are great for shorts?

Thanks for your help with this one!
